When did Americans start saying "university"...
Apr 15, 2015, 11:57 AM

instead of "college"? Lately I'm seeing a bunch of Americans saying things like "we only went to university together for a year," or "I graduated from university in..." I thought only furreigners said "university."

I don't like it when a college is called a University
Apr 15, 2015, 12:00 PM

don't know when people used university instead of college but it contextually it makes sense. For example, its Clemson University and it is comprised of multiple colleges, thus if you both went to Clemson but were parts of different colleges it would make more sense to say we went to University together.

But what if U were both at UNC at the same time. How would you handle that?

Other people say "university" instead. Personally, USA USA USA USA USA USA USA, so I want Americans to keep using American short-hand.

That's sort of what I thought

Although I just figured it was Americans sort of unconsciously picking up language from British people. Sort of like the people who started talking about cheering on their "side" in "football matches" on the "pitch" because that's what they heard about while watching an EPL game.
