To celebrate my mom being 24 months sober, I booked us a trip to Vegas with the money I won in my NCAA basketball pool. Now before y’all heap too much praise on me for being a great son, I have to admit this is a heavily discounted travel package and the hotel isn’t exactly a Days Inn.
Anyhow, Mom cried when I told her and hasn’t stopped making plans for next week which leads to this post.
She wants to wear her lucky Hunter Renfrow jersey to the casino but I think it’s a bad idea. I’m afraid the other players at the blackjack and/or roulette table won’t like someone wearing #13. Is that a real concern or will she be OK as long as she doesn’t do her thing and run her mouth to any Bama fans?
Secondly, I’ve only been to an Indian casino once and barely remember any of it. I know they gave me lots of free booze when I was gambling so I was hoping there would be some Vegas insiders on here that could tell me which casino provides the most generous free poors. If I’m throwing down $5 a hand, I expect to be properly compensated for the risk.

From what I remember of Vegas, it is a rough place to try to stay sober. I hope y'all have fun, congrats to mom.

I am not expert on Vegas even though I have lost 10's of thousands there over my lifetime. The Wynn is the devil. Anyway, hopefully you can find a good Applebees. Have fun.

Went last week and loved it. Ocean Mile for good eats and drinks for reasonable price. Joes Steakhouse for the best steak I’ve ever had.
Wear good walking shoes. Those places are huge. Even with bus pass.

Vegas casinos are not a safe place for a recovering alcoholic. I hope your mother is not tempted or made to feel uncomfortable with all the alcohol flowing.

If you’re on a budget but looking for a solid dining and gambling option I’d suggest a visit to Ellis Island Casino & Brewery. The $9.99 Steak Special is great bang for your buck and is available all day, every day, you just need to ask. Plus they have $5 minimum tables and they make their own beer (and root beer for mom) on-site. Just my 2 cents, best of luck!

I have a similar heart warming story. My dad completed 24 months of gamblers anonymous and I took him to Vegas to celebrate. He wore his Jad Dean jersey...

I think you're putting to much thought into what other people think or will approve of. It's my opinion that as long as you're not wearing something that doesn't have abusive or vulgar images or wording on it, it isn't any of their business!!!

How did you decide Vegas with the free pours. So many choices to take someone who has become sober:
1) Vegas
2) Bourbon trail
3) Ireland - Guinness and Jameson tours
4) Booze cruise in Caribbean

I go to Vegas about 3-4 times a year for work. Anywhere on the strip is expensive. AND I MEAN UNGODLY EXPENSIVE!!! I'm yelling to truly emphasize how badly it is overpriced. The buildings and Bellagio fountain are worth seeing at least once though.
Go to Binions on Fremont St. Its considered "old Vegas" where the mob started it at before they got involved with big banks to build the iconic Strip that we know today.
Anyways all of Fremont St gives free drinks as long as your gambling and it doesn't take forever to get service like it does if your at one of the casinos on the Strip. Binions and Tony Rama's on Fremont Street also have really good food prices. Like Full racks of ribs, baked potato, and salad for 19.99
On the strip that costs you at least $80 or more in a casino restaurant.
My recommendation is to take a day and rent a car and drive to the Hoover ###. It's worth it to see and about 45 min outside of the Strip/Airport area.
Fremont Street also has $1 blackjack tables that will reel you in and even for non gamblers like myself make you spend 3-4 hundred.
Anyways good luck and remember it's all out there in the middle of nowhere because the Casinos don't lose!

If you can tear yourself away from the casinos, there are some beautiful places you could see on a day trip. I don't know if you are into beautiful country, but if you are Valley of the Fire is just a few minutes from Vegas. You could even make a day trip to Zion National Park.

Vegas is a bad idea for a newly recovering alcoholic. I went two weeks ago. Stayed at the Golden Nugget. I have not had a drink in 18 years, but being around that much alcohol in that close proximity is tempting. I know if I have one, I will probably have 20. The smell of alcohol permeates the gaming areas. That was my first time going to Vegas in 16 years and my first time ever sober.

That’s thoughtful of you. I would plan to stay longer since you are going to get rich. Double your time double your money. Mom will get bored and since she’s newly sober she can start a new career. If she works really hard and puts her back into it she could become famous and end up on these discount coupons all the nice people hand out day and night.
