at Mt Mitchell NC course which is highest peak East of The Rockies.
He crossed starting line this morning at 4:30am and has completed well over the 1st 50 miles which was at the summit and is headed on other portion of course..and will hopefully finish way before supper Saturday afternoon.
This is continuous walking, jogging or running up to the 40 hour cut-off time for finishing..with pit stops at designated junctures where his “chuck wagon supply partner in an SUV” is waiting with water, electrolytes, food, fresh clothing, medical supplies, a possible needed muscle rubdown and encouragement.
Two weeks ago Will ran the incredibly beautiful mountain range course in Auburn Calif with a landscape resembling Switzerland & the Colorado rockies combined, for 62 miles.
This Clemson grad is 54, been running over 25 years and has been in several Iron Men and Navy Seal type events.
Go SON & Go TiGER(s)..Gut eR Done.!

Plus he’s been in an event where runners push disabled vets in wheelchairs up stew mountainous roads by themselves or with 2-3 runners helping if need be.
Wish I could find that great pic of him huffing up a mountain road grade on a curve you would not believe and vet is grinning!

Temps @ Mt Mitchell now 46 with low of 26 @ 5am

with high SAT around 56 & sunny.
Will has clothing for this difference in temps and wears a night light on cap so to see trail during darkness filled with gravel, lose stones & rock, mud, streams, & boulders.
One slip or fall and he’s out and maybe endanger his life and/or professional job as Attorney.

Put him in as a favorite (Will Willis #234), then pin him and then easy to follow.
Yep, I remember well last year when you & I nervously followed him and with 30 minutes b/4 the 40 hr cut-off time, couple Tigernetters chimed in he’d finished.
Was so hyped up & disappointed thinking he had failed to finish and the Tiger came through with 15 minutes to spare even though he’d had been ill with head & chest cold and too much electrolytes in water mixture that caused him to vomit.
