What do legit posters here expect from DJ

this season? I’m optimistic and think he had some emotional stuff along with a bum digit and knee, but I’m not daft to think he’ll go all D-dub.
Our receivers need a major improvement, health wise, route running and accuracy to help.

Considering he has had an entire off-season to work on his mechanics, dropped weight, and has a quality QB behind him so we can go back to the RPO, he will be much more effective.

I think we will know early on where the season will be going if he looks similar to our memories of last season, but don’t think he will. I really don’t want Mayes to get thrown into that fire yet.

It looked to me that they were tinkering with his mechanics during the season, and with no quality depth, they put a bunch of weight on him and limited designed runs. His confidence is one thing, but he just did not seem comfortable and the receivers were not much help either.. It is also on the coaches that 2 QBs did not pan out and another transferred, leading to a situation where we were 1 injury away from the season effectively being over. An elite program should never find itself in the position it was in last year.

That's a tough question. The thing that worries me is how he just stands in the pocket and doesn't move his feet. He's lost weight and seems focused from what little we know. If he can come out against Tech and have a great game that will be huge for his confidence.

i don’t know, maybe i’m just still shell shocked over last year only seeing him throw a total of 9 passing touchdowns all season. (10 ints)
I hope to see improvement from him, the line, and the receivers. But I still feel like his skill and talent just isn’t transitioning to the next level of college ball. Yes he was an awesome high school QB but sometimes that’s as far as some kids go. I would love nothing more to see him come out and put up Boyd/Deshaun/Trevor numbers.
Either way I am just pumped for some Clemson football!!!!

I hope his efforts with weight, conditioning and mechanics are successful. He has loads of potential.
His regression from his freshman year was painful to watch for all of us. The receivers and o-line as has been said did on here did not help either.
I am not real optimistic of significant improvement.

How long does Dabo go to see if he’s DJ we thought he would be (and saw against ND), or DJ 2021 version? If he’s not dominant against GTech and Furman, does Cade get a look? Needs to be settled by Wake.

Cade will get a look early . . .
Jul 10, 2022, 8:51 PM

regardless of how DJ performs . . .
I expect DJ to have control of the offense . . . I expect him to supply a relaxed, calming effect on his teammates . . . I expect his accuracy to be improved, but not that much . . . I expect him to not force passes into tight spots, because he doesn’t trust his receivers, and rightfully so, like his predecessors . . . I expect him to throw the ball away to avoid sacks rather than scramble to gain yardage . . . I expect him to do enough to remain our #1 QB throughout the season . . .
If all of this is totally wrong . . . . . . . I expect our Coach to make the necessary substitution.
On a side note: I expected DJ to pitch a few innings for Monte last season just to see if he had chosen the wrong option . . . a 95mph fastball is nothing to “sneeze” about . . . just saying . . .

I don't expect much

All American, Heisman Trophy, Natty..
Seriously, I don't expect a huge change in his game, but small improvements (confidence in reads and faster decision making) along with improved OL and WR play could make a huge difference in results for us.
I hope I am wrong, but I've seen enough to not expect him to live up to the initial hype and be the next DW or TL. I'm hoping he can become a solid QB that makes sound decisions. That will be enough to win the ACC and put us in position to have a chance for even greater success.

I would have Cade play a few downs every game from the start of the season. 3rd down situations where he runs, but every now and then passes. I'd do that in case DJ falters, Cade would have a little game experience. It would help him immensely.

I think we'll see both quarterbacks in the early games and the question will be does he move the ball better than Klubnik. DJ didn't seem relaxed at any time last year. You can't teach self confidence and cool under pressure. I also believe Klubnik is developing relationships with the WRs. Putting in extra work. Getting a feel for what guys do. I expect Cade will be starting when we get to South Bend.

I’m not sure I “expect” anything. I hope for some things.

I hope to see some indication that he has spent some of the spring and summer with the receivers. I hope to see some evidence that he is angrier than any fan about last season’s performance. I hope that he’s healthy…that his knee and finger are non-factors.
After that, I hope to see a tremendous improvement in our WRs…in finishing plays, winning 50/50 balls, etc.
Nothing about the comments here about the Spring Game performance indicates that all is well with him but perhaps this summer has helped.

3800+ yards passing, 27+ TDs and <7 INTs
Thats what I expect from DJ and don't know what Dabo has talked to DJ about what he expects of him and goals set. IMO, it will depend how he plays the first 3 games and how he starts off week 4 against Wake.

I actually thought his Spring Game performance was
Jul 10, 2022, 7:26 PM
|
|
encouraging. Beyond the overall stat sheet, he showed some promising improvements.
Specifically, I went back and closely watched his second series, and he was very much in control and in command.
He moved the team very well gaining several first downs by completing key passes, finding check down receivers, making and excellent option pitch.
The drive unfortunately stalled when Dabo called a “touch tackle” on a play where DJ found a seam and had green grass in front of him forever. Still, the drive was encouraging given the format and circumstances of the game.
I think his lighter frame will give him much greater mobility and speed in the pocket and on running plays. We didn’t get to see this in the Spring Game.
A lot of what DJ needs is just a good injection of confidence to build on. Our opening games appear to be an opportunity for just that to occur.
Go Tigers! Show’em you're the man DJ!

I think he read all the hype and believed he was great,
Jul 10, 2022, 7:28 PM
|
|
But when he got lazy and put on 25lbs, didn't have stress of not being the starter, it was easy for him to be complacent. Then when things got serious, he hurt his leg, his finger and I think his left shoulder in a run. Or was that Helms, or both?
But he doesn't have that security now and needs to stand on his own abilities and not because he is older. Hope he does great but I have my concerns as I saw a lot of issues last year. I didn't read any articles about him working out with QB Coaches over the summer where we heard about Tajh, DW4, TLaw and Chase going to summer QB camps typically out west and as mentors at Elite 11. Either I missed the articles or he hasn't taken the initiative yet.
His response to being benched really didnt set well with me and I remember a couple threads about that. Just felt like he didn't see himself as needing to improve.

Go back and look at the ND game 2 years ago. He was phenomenal. I think our coaches did a horrible job preparing him last year. Also didnt help it was our worst WR group in 15 years. I expect much better play from him this year, Cade needs about 25 lbs before hes ready. JMO

What I Hope is to see the player we saw against ND and BC when DJU stepped in for Trevor…DJU is a good kid - I’m pulling for him.. What I hope is to see better o line and wr play in order to make that hope a reality….
What I expect? I didn’t see anything in the spring game to make me feel better… However- it’s the spring game so you can’t read too much into it …. I expect to see Cade on the field if we don’t see the improvements I hope for….

Had I been his advisor I'd have told him to enter the transfer portal as soon as the last season ended. He needs to play for a Florida team so he won't have to sit on a frozen bench this winter.

because he was so bad last year. However, he is just not starting QB material on a national contender.
IMO, he might be good enough to win the very easy first 3 games but not good enough against real competition.
Klubnik will get plenty of playing time against GaTech, Furman and LaTech to get him ready to possibly take over against Wake Forest in game 4.
IMO, our chance to make the CFP rests on Klubnik because DJ isn't good enough.

..cause he had a 13 game season to turn it around and never did. We all hoped week after week that the light would switch on, but it just didn't happen. So I'm hoping the kid comes out and burns it up, but really don't feel good about it happening. But you are certainly correct that WR play has to improve to give him a fighting chance.

My head is a little more pessimistic. I just don't know. I know injuries had our WR corps down. But he needs to make his receivers look good and that's asking a lot. There was no wow moments in the Spring Game. Maybe there was 1 deep pass, but the rest...meh.
He should be good enough to win 9 games next year with no problem. The D will help him out. The kicker is if he is his former self, or a slightly improved former self, then we need Cade ready to go, which means playing time. My guess is Cade will see lots of playing time. 60% DJ, 40% Cade at the beginning of the season. I don't think giving up game pt will do DJ any favors.

I think the coaches will know after pre-season practice. I think we will know in the first 2 games by how many snaps they give Cade. If Cade gets a good # of snaps that means the coaches are getting him prepared to be ready by the State game.

Let us not forget that KB saved our bacon in that A&M game though. That was huge. Too bad KB did not stay and get another ring.

Remember that throw too and thinking, “holy chit, he plays for Clemson.” It was a throw he made I’ll never forget.

Yes, that is what I was thinking but I could be wrong. But the DW4 throw down the seam was incredible for a freshman and he should have started and stayed in the game. It took about 2 more games before his playing increased substantial

We’ve saw a good showing against nd but we also witnessed disastrous performances all season long, last year.
I’ll always be a Clemson diehard fan, but I don’t have any predictions on which version we’re gonna get. Hopefully he balls out and is able to have a pro career.
One big difference this year is that we’ll have more competition at the qb position. I guarantee if he’s performing all season long like he did last year, then we’ll see him pulled and Cade will get a chance to see what he can do. I don’t think Cade is ready to start yet but I do think he’ll shine when he gets opportunities and he’s definitely better than what we had last year.

If the qb throws for 3k yards and at minimum a 2 to 1 td to int ratio we will be crushing teams. Who it is that is doing it I dont care.

I genuinely hope he excels this season and and we only see Cade in mop up duty as we blow out team after team on our way to a national championship. Do I think that's how this season will go down? Almost certainly not. I'd say there's a much better chance of a mid season trip to the transfer portal for him, unfortunately.

Last year, defensive coordinators had game film to use for game planning, unlike his freshman starts, and he was exposed. Although there were factors working against him, I believe he will continue to struggle at this level.

I expect slight improvement but not enough to keep the job. I think his mental game is too weak, and any pressure/mistake/adversity will continue to rattle him.

Baseball, the great thing is he is talented enough to be an incredible Baseball pitcher if QB doesn’t work out.
My honest opinion is Cade Klubnik will start for most of the year and May win the job in camp before the season begins.
I love DJ and his character, he never complained or blamed others last season, he took responsibility so he has hope at turning this around and being great.

First and foremost, I am pulling for DJ to get this thing turned around. Teams got film on him and his long range accuracy and he really struggled. The accuracy, touch, situational awareness all need to improve. Let’s not forget though that this was his first year as a starter and his supporting cast did not help the situation. The thing that gives me pause and concern is that he was soooooo bad last year and did not give us any flashes last year that he could be great. We only have 2 games from his freshman year.

BloodbeOrange®I agree… Between OL, WR injuries and family issues I’m looking for a lot better this season. I’m pulling for the guy he seems like a good person and from things I read has a good work ethic. He had a tough act to follow.

We'll know by the end of September.
Ga Tech as an opener -- I don't remember the last time Clemson came out clicking in the first game...like maybe Tajh Boyd and co against UGA? Seems like we've been clunky (especially on O) out the gate and around October we start to gel.
Good news is we have experience and talent in the wings if DJU struggles.
In all honesty, I liked how CK2 looked in the spring but idk if he's DW4/TL16 out of the box ready.
He'd probably be serviceable no doubt but if we can help it, I'd love to have him just be brought along slowly. Then again, he could come out and set the world on fire which would be fine to me.
I think I remember reading a thread where it seemed like someone commented that insiders were saying DJU & CK2 were pretty close in competition heading out of camp.
The opener can't get here soon enough! Can't believe fall camp is only a few weeks away

I’m legit not a coot, so, I got that going for me.
I think DJ will show improvement. I think a lot of his issues were mental, he has some nice tools when he’s not over thinking the play. I’m sure Streeter will better tailor the offense to his skillset. The RPO was not good for him. He had a lot of trouble making reads there and on the zone read play.
I think he loosens up and has a better grasp of the offense this year. Run game improved towards the end of last seasons. I expect to build on that this year. That should help him overall. We need to get him some easy looks with OPEN wide receivers instead of having to throw back shoulder every play.

He needs guys to go up and take the 50/50 balls the way the receivers for DW4 and TL did on a consistent basis.
If a guy or two from the WR corps develop into anything resembling Mike Williams or Tee Higgins, we’ll see DJs game improve dramatically.

Having the Ross (when he was a freshmen) would have definitely been of a great help. I sit behind the bench and it seemed every game we had multiple receivers standing on the sidelines with no pads.

Fans forget how many amazing, acrobatic catches were

made by guys like Ross, Higgins, Williams, and Renfrow that made both DW and TL much more effective passers. Those guys got open and when they weren’t open they just fought and took the ball away from the defender.
Nobody did that last year for DJU at all!
Not saying DJ will ever be as good as DW or TL, but the gap is not nearly as wide as the stat sheets make it appear.

Those catches in dang was it 2016 by Ross were sick. Looked like a lot of 50/50 balls that went our way.

I keep going back and forth on what to think of him. I’m truly pulling for him and think he’s a good kid. The ND game his freshman year was great, but I wasn’t as impressed with the BC game as others here are. I think that game showed some of the same problems we saw with DJ all last year.
Yes he has pocket awareness and mobility issues, but I really think 95% of his play issues are mental. I think he went into that ND game with a mindset of it’s okay if we don’t win this one. I’m not excepted to win and it doesn’t kill the playoff goals if I don’t. The BC game was different.
Flash forward to last year and he’s THE guy and the only guy. He’s the next top Clemson QB after two all timers. He opens the year with an injured OL and young RBs against the best defense in CFB and ##### his britches. The guy went to one of the top HS in the country and probably didn’t have to face too much losing or adversity. For the first time in his football career he’s struggling.
A couple games later I think DJ actually improved for the NCST game. Watch how he opened that one. He’s got healthy WRs, he’s hitting them in the hands, he’s moving in and out of the pocket and throwing with confidence. He struggled a little later on, but against a good NCST defense. He did more than enough to win. The throw to Ross in OT is still on Ross in my opinion. All the sudden Clemson has two losses early in the season for the first time in I can’t even remember. I think the mental wheels fall off for DJ there.
Even in this latest spring game, you can still see DJ thinking through every movement, every throw. He has no confidence in himself. His mind has to tell his body what to do, instead of his body just knowing. No self-confidence will kill even the most talented of athlete’s abilities. I worry that as soon as he has a couple bad plays this year that he’s going to think here we go again and crumble.

Think about spring games in the past. DW4 didn't even have to play in them.
KB was frustrated and coaches even went on the field to try to help him.
TLaw owned his first spring game. Big smile, hands on his should pads collar, knew he had it.
As for DJU, his spring game looked a lot like his in-season games.

...but I think we already have seen that we will get the same DJ we had last year in the spring game. Poor ball placement on 4 out of 5 throws then one that is amazingly perfect. I feel like our only hope is that CK is mature like TL and can step in to the starting role.

Much more than 2021 ... accuracy on short, mid-range, long passes; much improved mobility and release times; excellent understanding of playbook; great timing with receivers; and leadership not evident in 2021.
DJ can improve but unless he was severely injured most of last season, his level of play, ranked last among ACC QB's and in the bottom 5% of QB's nation-wide, did not earn a 2022 starting position. Clemson has been been here before in 2018 - Trevor Lawrence came to Clemson after a runner-up showing at Elite 11 camp, played well in the spring game, beat out Kelly Bryant, and led Clemson to an undefeated national championship season.
Cade Klubnik has entered Clemson a semester early after leading his high school to several Texas state championships and earning a #1 rating at Elite 11 camp. He has to learn the playbook, spend quality time with his teammates, and build timing with Clemson WR's. Then it's just a matter of time unless Clemson wants to waste this uber-talented 2022 defense and miss the 2022 CFB playoffs.

this season? I’m optimistic and think he had some emotional stuff along with a bum digit and knee, but I’m not daft to think he’ll go all D-dub.
Our receivers need a major improvement, health wise, route running and accuracy to help.
He holds the ball too long. He showed no improvement in the spring game. It is a matter of time until Klubnik takes over.
