As I believe that is what Goodwin should have done bc, it won't work again the way BV done it, and the way BV done isn't the only successful way that it can be done. Progress happens when a persons success can be tweaked by another, and IMO, that is why one of the youngest countries in the world as in the USA has grown leaps and bounds when compared to older settled countries in the world, it's what we like to call the American way!!!

Do blitzes just cover up weaknesses or are they strategic? We have the potential to be a fast, great defense and that may mean blitzes do not have to be a huge part of the game. Either way, football is a game of individual matchups that you have to win and we have the talent to do that. Coaches know what they are doing.

"Do blitzes just cover up weaknesses or are they strategic?"
Yes and yes.
Teams that have major weaknesses defensively (remember Clemson in the 1990's) used blitzes to cover up chronic weaknesses in various parts of the Clemson defense. Reggie Herring did the blitz thing a lot; to me this appeared to be more of a strategic practice than just a tactical practice.
Unfortunately, when good teams were facing a 3rd and reasonably long against us in the 1990s, they could predict that Herring would send a blitz (in this case, as a tactical maneuver). The well coached opposing teams were ready for out blitzes and burned us for long gains.
To me, it appeared as if Venables common use of the blitz had a counter intuitive benefit. Teams were so prepared for blitzes in the obvious situations that their plays were not as effective when Clemson showed blitz, but then backed off into coverage.

I think BV got a big kick out of the sacks that came from a 3-man rush.
I know I did.

Live by the blitz-die by the blitz. I agree with Goodwin in that we made a lot of big plays but also gave up a lot of big plays over the years to tight ends and backs on pass plays on blown assignments. In very recent years we’ve had trouble slowing teams down and protecting the lead in close games until teams got inside the 10. I wonder how much of that is associated with our dependence on the blitz?

We didn't have to blitz a lot with the Power Rangers, and this years DL may be that type of strong. I hope guys can stay healthy.

I'm hoping that Wes finds away not to allow a blitz to cause us chunk plays for a lot of yards, or being responsible for a TD with a defender to far away from the ball carrier that we were burned by!!!

For some reason I'm more confident in the defense personnel changes than the offense. Hopefully both will be successful.

I like his response. We all know BV was one of the best, and Wes would be stupid to disregard some of the things he did to be successful, especailly since his entire defense is accustom to it. But like any new hire should do (regardless if its in football or business), get the job, assess the talent you have and implement your vision which is made up of every coach that was part of his development, with a tweek to your personality and vision.
I like the chip on his shoulder. There is no question he has paid the proper respect to what BV has done and taught him at Clemson, but its his defense now. I love the way the man carries himself.
Its going to be a good one this fall. Go Tigers !!!

Was Venables there to recruit more of our players or recruits watching practice? Asking for a friend.

Didn't, seems eerily similar to my feelings about Wes. There was a confidence Dabo had and I bought it. I recall tailgate friends cashing me crazy. I sure hope Wes has that it factor

I’m excited to see Wes Goodwin’s defense. He has a chip on his shoulder.
He’s got some big shoes to fill. Time will tell if Coach Swinney made the right decision or not.

BV's D held the #1 team in the country to 3 points last year. If Wes and D hold to that standard, Clemson is in business in 2022.
