The dead has risen!

just after midnight this morning my grandpa met Jesus. among many things, my grandpa gave me a love for gardening and a love for the mountains. he and grandma lived in mountain rest and i have several memories of him driving me around clemson campus as a kid, which turned into a love for Clemson and a large reason why i wound up with the opportunity to earn my degree from Clemson.
i took many opportunities to spurn parties and spend weekends with them on their plot of land along highway 28. i am not an early riser, and would often stumble downstairs when staying with them to hear "well, the dead has risen!" coming from the well worn recliner, one of dozens of teases my grandpa gave me almost on replay every time i stayed with them. well, now that statement just carries a little more weight. indeed, grandpa, the dead has risen.

You made the right choice spending all that time with him.

Grandparents are a blessing and forever missed.
I have one left and I don’t think she’s gonna make it to her 90th birthday. But she’s had a really good life! She’s ready to meet Jesus, too.

Bless you and your Grandpa! If your memories of him are half as rich as mine of my grandfather, it will sustain you for the rest of your life! Condolences on the loss but congratulations on the lessons learned!

Spent a lot of time with my (in-law, but real) grandparents. Wish I’d spent more. Went out to help feed and milk the cow, feed dozens of chickens, collect eggs, etc. Then dug worms in the (old) compost piles and went to the old mill pond to catch as many redbreast and crappy as I could clean, and eat or freeze. Repeat morning chores, then enjoy the best dinner a growing boy could. Fried chicken that had been afoot earlier that day, chicken dumplings, fresh ground and fried ho cakes, and the best fried okra and delicious collards you could ask for. Washed down by ice cold hand pumped water and cold milk with lumps of cream floating on top. Go to sleep with no AC but hopefully a great summer thunderstorm beating off the tin roof to cool the air off and lull me to sleep. God bless. Thanks for reminder of the best times with our heroes.

Well JS, my childhood wasn’t exactly up to your level, but the kids still look funny at me and ask “Grandpa, why do you shake the milk every time before you pour it?”

LOL! So true. I remember after Molly (cow) died we switched to store bought. There was no comparison to say the least.

Wow. Great post. I read it multiple times. Let me ask you this regarding the chickens... did you ever "crank one up" or "wind 'em up"? Mom would send me out to get a chicken to cook, and they're hard to catch, it's like they know the pot is calling them. Once you caught it, you just grabbed it by the head and stated swinging it round and round, using their body weight to break all the bones in their neck. They died pretty quickly. Pot of boiling water to loosen up the feathers, pluck it, and get busy with a big knife...

No, my father or uncle would usually handle that. It’s true though, the ones my grandmother identified definitely knew once they were targeted and found an extra gear. They (usually 2) got the wind up and the scalding bath. MaMa took it from there. Tiny kitchen in an old farmhouse and could never figure out how so much food appeared out of seemingly nowhere.

What a blessing it must have been to have had such a wonderful grandpa!!! Neither one of mine were worth a ###…. 1 I never met and the other not until I was in my 20s. When he had the audacity to ask me for money!? I’m sorry for your loss! But at the same time, wishing I could be in your shoes grieving for a grandpa that loved me.

Also, it sounds like he gave you the love for Jesus Christ which is the most important thing this side of eternity. I know you will miss his for now. God bless and the only peace is through Him our Lord and Savior.
