On the court, they are winning ACC games at a rate higher than under any previous coach.
Not only that, but they weathered the storm of a frustrating stretch of games and are now playing great basketball again.
Academically, they are setting records for team GPA and are graduating at an extremely high rate.
Our players are heavily involved in community service.
They carry themselves well. We don't have to worry about them getting into trouble.
In short, they represent Clemson well and are model student-athletes we can be proud of.
Great job Coach Brownell and staff!
Now let's go beat the Wusspack tomorrow! Go Tigers!

I'll be even more prouder if they can finish on the right side of five hundert, make a deep run in the ACC tourney, and a S-16 or better appearance.
Also, it is good to see the team battle through a tough stretch and not fold like a lawn chair.

Or were you referring to our ACC record?

And it sank in just fine for plenty of folks, except T from Sparkle City.
I know ... Swinney's won plenty of titles and has generally outperformed Brownell. Get it.
But it could be that the b-ball team finishes higher than 6th, with possibly a better winning %age.
Then what will the complaint be?
Mine will be that they didn't beat Duke at Duke when they had the chance. And that they keep everyone on the edge of their seats all season long. That it's just not as easy as I'd like them to make it.

I don't think you saw people on here bragging about Dabo as a result of our standing in the ACC. There were not posts celebrating our ACC winning record.
But here we are with the clown troll and Brownell.

a former national championship-calibre football program finishes sixth in a basketball conference. But Swinney did - celebrated the team's resilience and grit. Even in the face of the disappointing losses ... to basketball schools.
But of course, and maybe even understandably, Brownell doesn't get the same latitude because he's been here so long and hasn't seen the same results ... in what is possibly the toughest basketball conference there is.
So, yeah, when a perennial middling b-ball program from a football school puts in an above-average performance in a basketball conference, it's not particularly out of place to celebrate the accomplishment.

According to college basketball RPI rankings, since Brownell's first season in 2010, the ACC was the top ranked conference in only one season (2016-17). And in the last 5 seasons including this season, the ACC is averaging around the 6th best conference. There are plenty of measures to determine the strength of a conference, but based on these rankings, they do not support the ACC being the toughest conference to play in.

I was not stating that there were not tough teams in the ACC since 2010. However, the argument that the ACC, as a whole, is the toughest conference though includes all the teams from the conference.
For instance, if we examine the 2018-19 year that Virginia won the national championship, the ACC was the 3rd best conference (according to RPI). This was also the ACC's 4th highest RPI ranking among all conferences for a given year since 2010. The individual team rankings were (1, 2, 5, 11, 21, 33, 44, 66, 83, 129, 156, 169, 171, 180, 185). There were some tough teams that year. There were also 6 teams with sub .500 overall records.
Alternatively, the Big-12 (ranked #1 in RPI as a conference) during the 2018-19 year had individual team ranks of (4, 9, 18, 30, 34, 42, 49, 52, 112, 113).
If you didn't count those bottom 5 teams from the ACC so both conferences had the same number of teams, then the ACC would have had a higher RPI ranking. However, those teams were included in the conference and a part of each ACC teams conference schedule that year so they were included in the conference RPI.

you're saying the ACC would be good were it not for the bad teams in the ACC.
Or, that all the bad teams in the ACC make the good teams seem less good, including those five national championship teams that beat the best teams from all the other, better conferences.
So now, Im wondering if Clemson basketball will ever be good enough to gain the respect of the average Clemson basketball fan, competing as they do in such a middling conference.

My apologies. My point was not to disrespect Clemson and the ACC. It was only to state that the data doesn’t support the ACC as the toughest conference over the past decade.
But trying to argue one conference being tougher than another is silly, in my opinion, given the parity in college basketball now. Each conference will have good and bad teams and the level to which they are in either direction will vary from year to year.
As they say, we play who’s on our schedule. Let’s just handle our own business with our own Clemson schedule and the rest will take care of itself.

just shows how much the conference has fallen off the cliff compared to the glory days. In the days of your Sampsons, Jordans, Worthys, Laetners, etc, a .500 record in the ACC made you a tournament lock. We would get eight or nine teams into the dance in a given year. Where did it all go? That's not just a rhetorical question. One thing that changed was the "One and Done" rule that was adopted. This allowed coaches who embraced it, like John Calipari at Kentucky, to suddenly nearly corner the market on top talent. Much like on NIL, the ACC lagged behind on that. It took awhile before even ultrasuccessful coaches like Ratface finally felt the pinch and started competing for, and accepting talent that they knew was only going to be around for a year or two. What other factors can you come up with that caused the decline in the perception, and actual play of the ACC in basketball?

And don’t have an argument otherwise that you would actually say Brownell’s era of basketball coaching is more relevant than Dabo’s era of football coaching. I’d love to see you make a coherent intelligent point that that is the case.

confidence and lose that anxious energy. It looks like they are starting to play downhill so to speak and might be on the cusp of getting some momentum. WE've got a tough stretch to finish out the year. Alot of opportunity to get better and gel as a team and not just as individuals. Hopefully the trend continues.
I love that we're making a point to get the ball to the right people at the end of games these past couple of wins. Nothing worse than losing a lead within the last 2 minutes when you have the pieces on this team to guard against that. We'll still lose some games b/c the there are alot of teams with similar talent left on the schedule. Hopefully we will continue playing loose and confident.

Why do you consider the ending stretch "tough"?
We have 7 games left, 5 of them in the Quad3 category.
Home vs NC St - Quad 3 - we will be favored by 5+ points against a team we beat 3 times last year by double-digits
@ GTech - Quad 3 - this should not be scar. Tech has the 3rd-worst power 5 NET on our schedule and a terrible 3-11 conference record.
Home vs FSU - Quad 3 - we will be favored handily and should win going away
Home vs Pitt - Quad 2 - this will be a tough game. Pitt is playing well. Good to have this one at home.
@ ND - Quad 3 - similar to GTech. Should be an "easy" road game if one exists. ND has the 2nd-worse power 5 NET on our schedule.
Home vs Cuse - Quad 3 - we beat them up there, we should be able to handle them at home
@ Wake - Quad 1 - very tough matchup to end the season. We will be an underdog in this one.

outside of ND and GT but GT beat us already once. So they know they can match up well with us.
WE pulled away late in the Syracuse game but it was neck and neck most of the way. I always expect us to win the quad 3's and toss up the 1 and 2 but its possible those quad 3's will be dog fights. no gimme's..and quad 3 losses sting. But I like how we're trending and I just hope we can at least stay close to the level to end the season.
Tough is subjective. I'm more a murphy's law kinda guy so I look at everything as a uphill climb and never entertain complacency.

This is just another veiled shot at Dabo and the football program, but just about everyone here knows that.
Incidentally, I like Brownell and hope he wins the rest of our games, does well in March Madness and stay sat Clemson, but really tire of JK and others trying to play him off against the football program that measures light years ahead of basketball by any metric.
Just stop!

It was posted on the basketball board. I never mentioned football.
So it's weird that you bring up football, because this isn't about football.
Although it's pretty funny, because that's the stereotype about Clemson fans - everything is about football.

The ACC wasn’t this low for any other coach in Clemson history.
Good season, but not over yet. Anything short of the final 32 would be a MAJOR disappointment considering our experience and depth.

I agree with the ACC down comment.
However, those rankings are from 2022. The ACC is currently 4th in conference NET this season.
We are 5th in ELO and RPI.

and you do not need to buy into that narrative. The Big 12 has figured out the NET. Beat cupcakes by 40 in November and December. The ACC does not do that. That's why the ACC, no matter the number of selections, has consistently put teams in the Final Four. The Big 10 and Big 12 normally disappear after the first two rounds.

is that all those years when the football team was the toast of the ACC, the argument was that the anti-ACC bias worked against the program by claiming the ACC was down in football.
So everyone would go to rankings, SoS, and the like, to show why the football team deserved respect.
But when it comes to basketball ... crickets.
Maybe people are just weary of Brownell and not basketball, per se.

Says the President of the CBB jock sniffer club. One would think that by now you would learn to keep your mouth shut because the crash is inevitably coming.

CBB has his flaws and he often disappoints. I’m not saying I don’t think we can do better or that the program couldn’t use new leadership, but that’s a risky proposition. . . And I’m proud of clemson basketball. We’re easily a top 25 team right now, and as deep as the competition is in college basketball, that’s saying something.
I was at CU in the shyatt years when we seemed to go 3-13 every year. Even then we were competing though. Remember seeing akin akingbala in the post office and telling him “hey Akin, good season,” and he appreciated it.
Then OP came in and we made it to a higher level. Remember seeing him at a bar downtown Charleston and telling him, “I’m just so proud of Clemson basketball.” He appreciated it too.
I don’t think we’re actually winning at a higher clip in conference during Brownell’s full tenure, but over the last two years we are. He’s giving us something to be proud of. I watch every game I can. College basketball is a beautiful thing, and the tigers are a really good college basketball team right now.

Has performed better than any Clemson coach in ACC play. He is has definitely had more success on the road in the ACC than most Clemson coaches. He deserves way more credit than he's getting from some of the crappy members of his fan base.

At some point he’s gotta break through. 3 tourneys and 1 sweet 16 in 13 years is mediocre. There’s no arguing that. If this team doesn’t make noise in postseason, he oughta be done at Clemson

Need to recognize you have one of the best basketball coaches in the business. Either get on board or get off his back. He is doing a great job. A portion of the Clemson fan base hate basketball. I do not understand it. They celebrate the losses and moan about the victories. It is pathetic.

I don’t see those stories very often but I am a very passive follower of the program.

You state in this thread that you are disappointed in the football team for 3 years of underperforming.
How disappointed are you in the basketball team for over 13 years of underperforming?

After 13 seasons, it's about time. Even if Clemson makes the NCAA tournament this season, Brownell is still making the Big Dance less than 30% of the time. Who is satisfied with that?

When you look at our program history, as well as how poorly we fund and support our program at Clemson, we overachieve relative to what would be expected.
