Every time we whiff (recruiting-wise) on a 5-star from the west coast, I take a deep sign of relief.
Anyone else remember good ol' Korey Foreman? #1 DE in high school out of CA, committed to Clemson, tattooed a tiger on his forearm....then out of nowhere recommitted and then committed to USC/Riley?
Yeah.....well.....he should have stuck with Clemson:

There have not been very many success stories out of players who left Clemson

in ANY form. Probably Derion Kendrick had the most success in his year at Jawja. Most others wound up like Foreman, busts.
(I'm sure some SEC Homers on here will come up with some examples to refute my post, have at it!)

Aside from tgose DB's that bolted for Michigan and Georgia after Venables left for Oklahoma. I am not sure how that LB did who switched to Oklahoma with Venables.

Jaren Kanak starts at OU and is a freak athlete. He will play on Sundays.

I agree 100%.
I was extremely disappointed when he decided to join BV at Oklahoma. As a kid from Kansas, I was not surprised.
If he was at Clemson, then I’d expect him to be a starter for sure. Really good instincts, but he has borderline world class speed for his size.
I definitely believe Kanak will be in the NFL.

You have to admit though the culture from the east coast and west coast is VASTLY different. Talent is talent but attitude, integrity, and values are a learned trait.

Eh, I’ve lived on both coasts. There are good people and losers on both, and the percentages aren’t as different as you’d think.

if people turn off the news and actually experience the world they would understand that people are all basically the same.
It's the ones that have never left their homestate that are convinced the world is evil

I agree. I have spent equal time on bith coasts over these 50 plus years. Not much difference for the average Joe. Similar. When it comes to athletics there is no difference. Politics are different.

I think some people here are rigid in their beliefs.

They think California is all glitz and glamor, Hollywood, and far left politically.
They think the southeast is all slow-paced, sports and outdoors, and far right politically.
These ridiculous generalizations tell a lot about who someone is.

It is kind of funny to look back at the 5 star players that either completely busted or just didn't live up to their ranking.
2011: Tony Steward, 12th overall, #2 OLB 2016: Tavien Feaster, 14th overall, #1 RB 2017: Hunter Johnson, 30th overall, #2 Pro 2018: Xavier Thomas, 4th overall, #1 SDE 2018: Josh Belk, 25th overall, #1 DT 2018: KJ Henry, 26th overall, #4 WDE 2020: DJ Uiagalelei, 2nd overall, #1 Pro 2020: Bryan Bresee, 3rd overall, #1 SDE 2020: Demarckus Bowman, 25th overall, #2 RB
TBD on...
2021: Tristan Leigh, 16th overall, #4 OT 2022: Cade Klubnik, 13th overall, #2 QB 2022: Jaedyn Lukus, 30th overall, #7 CB

Hmmm....i would take Steward, Henry and Bresee off your list. Stew blew out both knees and Bresee dealt with injury as well personal issues during their time at Clemson. Bresee is going to be a very good pro. Henry had a solid if unspectacular career and is getting a shot in the league. I wouldn't call him a bust. Probably the same for XT. You can't hold injury and personal strife against these guys. Might take Belk off there too....he obviously had mental health issues.
You could argue DJ has had a solid career as well but QB is such an important position that you either have it or you don't. I never thought DJ had "it". He'll probably have a long nfl backup career just based on physical attributes. Much like Whitehurst he'll also probably bank boat loads of money
But alas....it's your list.

I just factored injuries into it.
Christian, Dexter, and Myles Murphy were 5 stars as well. They had much more of an impact than Bresee (injuries/personal issues), KJ (slow development), and XT (injuries/personal issues).
I thought Bresee would have been what Christian and Dexter were. I though KJ would have been what Murphy was. I though XT would have been an elite pass rusher with double digit sack seasons. But those things just didn't transpire.
I would imagine Woods, if he stays healthy, will also be much more impactful than Bresee, KJ, and XT. He has potential to be one of the best we've ever had.

As far as football 'value' tied to 5 star ranking.... you are correct.

The two that I would question on your list are XT and Bresee.
XT came in and was 100% what was expected of him as a freshman in 2018. In 2019 Clemson switched to a heavy load of 3 man front because of a lack of quality DTs. He still played very well in that season, but he was not allowed to play his natural edge rushing position to showcase his skills. Clearly 2020-21 went very poorly for him and 2022 should likely be included in that as well due to injury issues, but I thought he was right back to where he was expected to be this season. He was a much more balanced and developed player in 2023 because he played the run very well along with still being very disruptive on passing downs. I think people have a hard time forgetting the 20-22 years in his career but in 18, 19 & 23 his play met expectations in my mind.
Bresee's issue is very similar to XT. The fact that his last season was his worst is the memory that most people have of his career. Similar to XT however, Bresee came in and was everything that was expected of him as a freshman. He was double teamed the rest of his career and didn't deal with it well in his final season when he was a shell of himself. Typically I think injuries play into how we see player's, but after having an outstanding rookie season, I feel we can't really call him a bust simply due to how horrible of a situation he was dealing with in his final season. He was clearly the player in his rookie NFL season that everyone thought he would be as a recruit. For that reason I wouldn't have him on the bust list.
If I commented on a third it would be Steward, but big picture he only contributed to his talent level for one season which must overall be considered a bust.

What is the difference between a "bust" and "disappointed expectations"? Given the quality of players that we recruit, if they can start 10+ games in their career, represent our esteem university and graduate and help us win games, is this a career one would consider a bust? Not me.

I don't give a crap where our players come from, I will support them regardless of geography. Whether it is a 5-star bust or a 3-star bust, what does it matter? You could make the argument that just based on numbers, half of every class is a "bust." Stars are based on athletic potential not finished product, I will always rolled the dice on the bigger, faster, stronger recruit because I have enough confidence in our staff that if we recruit them, their heads are right. From there it comes down to grit, grind and willingness to be coached.
