And what other measuring stick do you want - how many did you win vs. how many did you lose ?
Everything else is crying, smoke, and mirrors.

Bill Foster, Cliff Ellis, and Barnes were head and shoulders above Brad. OP was better too.

You are wrong. And all of those coaches bolted for better jobs. Sooner or later, the Lunatic Fringe is going to realize that Clemson is not a top notch basketball destination. Sad but true. Takes a special person to put up with a fan base that has little knowledge outside of football and spring football.

If Tates and our program had not had boosters that were free with their cash, I truly believe we would have won ACC Championships and contended for a National Championship. Life is full of what ifs but our history would be vastly different.

Well, if the boosters had not been free with the cash we would not have gotten most of the players he got, including Tree, Skip, Stan, Colin and others.
That said, he was a great coach. He and Coach K were assistants at Army or played together there I think. Cut out of the same cloth. Tates could have done for Clemson what K did for Duke. He really was that good of a coach

73-76. My room was right next to the bathrooms, on the "back side", which faced the other sections of Johnstone. Not much of a view, but it made up for it in being able to hear (and smell) what your neighbors 3 or 4 rooms down were doing, as ALL of old Johnstone did.

Tates was an excellent coach with impeccable taste in automobiles for the players and in coeds apparently.
He and Bob Knight were actually tight buds. The dude could recruit although the Monte Carlos may have done the recruiting for him.
We had some dudes under him and played sound basketball

He was a better coach - very intense based on seeing him in action and attending camp. Some of the board memories are a little foggy on these cars and coeds. I was there and saw who was driving what. Won't mention the booster but the big money was from one main guy. It was two Monte Carlos and two Mercury Cougers. Skip and Colon got the Cougers while Tree and Stan got the Monte Carlos. Not rocket science. The four cars would be lined up outside of Littlejohn during practice and of course Clemson was a teeny tiny place back in the 70's. Back then there was was a tiny number of AA coeds. The ladies I saw riding shotgun with Skip were professional ladies. I was told they were flown in from Atlanta. Didn't see who the other guys were dating but don't know why they would not have had some equal opportunity. Had a personal visit to Tree's room in Mauldin Hall (I was 16 and delivering a pizza). Not a regular room. It was a recreation or activities room that had been converted into a somewhat lavish dorm room. Great players and good coaching but a bit too much rule bending. Some great memories.

Love when Skip's name is mentioned, brings back memories. My opinion the best guard that ever played at CU. Sad to say I never got to see him in person....70s was one hell of a great time for ACC basketball.

It's a harder comparison than people might think. Tate took over a team that was below .300 in winning percentage. Brownell took over a program than hadn't finished below .600 in 5 years. The SOS they faced cumulatively were very similar. If you don't count Tates' first season against him, it's pretty much a toss up.

Unfortunately Tates Locke was cheating while coaching at Clemson. That’s one of the reasons he was fired. There were other rumors I want mention but if true it was another embarrassment for Clemson University.
Coach Brownell’s team has lost some game they should have won and they have won games they should have lost. We are in the top tier in the ACC.
I say let’s see how the reminder of the season plays out before making any coaching decisions. Some fans I do not believe will ever like Coach Brownell regardless of his success at Clemson. I think this is one of his best seasons at Clemson with more talent on the way.

There are no rules now and CBB can't adjust? Every player deserves a new BMW. It would help with recruiting and BMW is nearby and it go to the local economy.
As far as the coaching part, I'll take Locke. Imagine how good Locke would be now with NIL money around.

Question: Tates Locke had a record of 62-70 at Clemson. Why do you consider that great coaching?
