Not trying to start an argument.
Aug 23, 2022, 2:02 PM
|

Just desperate for football season to start. (Tee that tater up! Just spot the ball and let's play!)
FSU opens this week against Duquesne. 1AA team. Should be a blowout (but Jax State last year should have been a blowout).
Duquesne is not as good as GT. FSU is not as good as Clemson. So, I'm just asking myself this question: Which game should have a larger margin of victory, FSU/Duquesne or Clemson/GT?
Hard to predict on blowouts. It depends on when the coach decides to call the hosses off. I'm thinking (expecting) both games to be in the 50-10 range, if not worse.
Most Nole fans I talk to are cautiously optimistic about us this year. General feeling seems to be, "If we don't win by 30+ then we're in trouble."
I'm thinking that Clemson will also win by 30+. What is the feeling of folks on this board about Clemson/GT. Complete the following sentence, "If we don't win by ______, we're in trouble."

Clemson should win comfortably...

but I don't focus much on the margin of victory since Dabo tends to start clearing the bench pretty early in games of this nature.
What I really want to see is significantly improved play by the QB, the WR's, and the OL. If we get that, the rest will take care of itself.

I'm with you. I'm looking for a decisive win but prefer that we sand bag a little, keep the tricks till they are needed later in the season. I also like to see the backups get plenty of opportunities. That keeps them and their moms happy plus gives them those important in game experiences.

FSU will win by 31. 45 - 14.
Clemson will win by 21. 31 - 10.
So you win.

3 TDs minimum should be the margin
Aug 23, 2022, 2:10 PM
|

If things go as planned, Dabo will put as many guys in as possible to give as much playing time as possible, so that might reduce the margin you'd see if the 1st string stayed in longer.
I'd be happy with a larger margin, but I'd also be happy with a W of any kind where we get as many guys possible as much experience as possible so we can be as deep as possible. If possible.

Honestly, Dabo just isn’t a run up the score guy, meaning, he’ll play lots of subs with a 3-4 TD lead. Clemson only gets giant blowouts if the subs dominate like the starters….and that is pretty rare. A 3 TD win with lots of subs would be good. Anything thing more would be very good. A 10 pt or less win with very little subbing would be bad. A loss would be extremely bad.
Duquesne?? If you can learn anything about your team by playing against Duquesne, then I suspect your team is in trouble.

The only thing we can learn about the team on the field would be bad. If we don't win by 30+ that is bad. If we win 70-0 that won't tell us anything good as far as how good we are.
But, the good things we can learn are mainly for the coaches and the sidelines. It's like a dress rehearsal.
1. Can we get the plays in (offense and defense) smoothly and on time? 2. Can the coaches communicate with each other with minimum confusion, and no chaos, on the sidelines. 3. Can we get substitutions in and out of the game without having to call timeouts or having guys rush onto the field as the ball is snapped? This would be part of the communication. Can the coaches communicate with each other and then with the players in a timely manner? 4. Do the coaches get the right players on the field for the play being run? Does the playcaller (Norvell) know which guys are on the field and call the plays that those guys execute best?
Those are things that might not show up on the scoreboard, but the coaches will certainly notice. I suspect there will be as much of a post game analysis on Sunday morning with coaches grading themselves as there will be grading the players. "How well were we prepared for the game and how can we improve?"
Should be similar situation for Dabo and staff vs. GT.

Dabo is going to manufacture adversity by whatever means necessary. He wants his boys to turn into hard men who don't quit while the clock is running. He want them to 'KNOW,' that they can take the game from the other team.
FSU has much to prove, a once proud lot who demanded respect from all who track college football. Clemson has nothing to prove but each player has lots to prove. Without Dabo's on field philosophy preventing it the score would reflect a blowout.
FSU will win by a blowout and play deep into the bench. Clemson will appear to squeak by until GT's defense wears down about the early or mid third quarter and Clemson backups will do much damage but not as much as FSU's bench will do to Duquesne late in the game.

Interesting word you used - adversity.
Norvell talks after every practice. 9 out of 10 days he used the word "adversity" at least once. "We try to put our guys into uncomfortable situations. We want them to experience adversity so we can see how they respond and they can learn how to respond. Football doesn't always go as expected. How do you respond when it doesn't? How do you deal with adversity?"

We're all hoping that Clemson's offense comes out crisp and puts things away early, but that's a wait and see. Hard to fathom FSU not winning in a blowout. Clemson also has an extra incentive to play more players early. 2 games in 5 days.

Until I see it two games in a row, this Clemson team is not a team that can score 50 points. Way too many wasted possessions, emphasis on the ground game which shortens the game, and still 3 big time hopefuls at WR being nursed along with injuries plus one already out for the year. 30 points is the ceiling against Tech unless the defense scores. Surely FSU is capable of blowing out lesser teams by now.

the game is in Atlanta, and FSU is hungry to prove some things. I’m not saying that they will “prove” it against this cupcake but I have no doubt that they will score as much as they can as long as it helps them develop a comfort level that the team is running on all cylinders.
Not only do I think we have a much better opponent (although I do expect us to win), but Dabo will focus more on depth if we are fortunate enough to get a good lead.

If the FSU margin of victory isn't greater, the Noles are going to suck again. Sorry, but you asked, lol! Actually, I'm hoping you guys are great again. The Clemson vs FSU rivalry can be special and the ACC needs that.

I have no idea how our offense is going to perform, nobody does. As for the 'Noles, I know less about them than GT and know even less than that about Duquesne.
I think if either of us win by less than 3-4 touchdowns it'll be a downer for the fans. GT isn't good, so if we struggle like we did last year people are going to lose their minds. FSU needs to win convincingly and look like they're improving, if they can do that it's mission accomplished. If Clemson can't win by 3+ touchdowns we're in trouble.

That doesn't apply here because if you actually followed Clemson, then you'd know Dabo doesn't run up the score on opponents. Dabo wants to play as many people as he can once we have an "acceptable" cushion.
It's more important for us to get meaningful reps and film for backups than it is to "win by XX points".

You came on here respectfully. Thanks for that. I would assume that FSU will run up score if they can because your fanbase needs a positive vibe. A "we are back" moment. Dabo does tend to clear the benches early and get playing time. So I will predict that you will win 52-7 and we will be 37-10.
Am excited as well and hope you have a great season. We need you back to relevance. Florida is getting tougher for you guys with Miami and Florida maybe on an upswing. Time will tell.

I didn't know Duquesne had a football team. I used to always pick them in March Madness just because of their unique name.

I knew they were a decent team in FCS. So you made me look this up. Began football in 1891 and two New Years day bowl wins, albeit almost a century ago.
