We CAN actually afford them...that's the rub...its our choice not to play the game for the few kids that could fill a hole here.
I've been a big advocate of using portal only slightly like BAMA and UGA do. Dabo's right, most kids can't play here and the ones that can have their hand out. Gotta find those 1-3 unicorns.

Can we afford to play in that arena? I know Ryan Day asked the Ohio Fans to raise $13M per year for NIL. Not sure where we stand with NIL fundraising but doubt, we are at this level, and it has to be spread across all sports unless you just want to be good at football.
The few kids who could fill a hole are often signed long before they announce, and some would not be a cultural fit. We may find a few needles in the haystack but not likely.

but he certainly does not back away.
I am pretty sure there are plenty of players good enough, they simply do not fit the Clemson character or Dabo has no desire to find out. He likes recruiting, bringing them in and learning the Clemson way from the start and not sure crud from another coach/team.
You are either Clemson All-in or you simply are everyone else. Go Dabo, and Go Tigers!!

I'm going out on the limb and say there is players in the portal that are good enough to play at Clemson, but Dabo covered that when he said there are guys in the portal that enter to see if they can get more money, and like he said, he ain't going to compete for those types of players, and if he did, it just wouldn't be right towards the one that stay and play for Dabo for what Clemson can afford to give them. I wish that people that don't understand his way would just shut the Fck up, they're not going to change Dabo bc they want to see him build a team from how much he would be willing to try and pay them. So as plain as I can be, people should leave him the fck alone about the portal bc if he ever has to have a portal guy, we will never get him if he has to have more than anyone else to get him.

and it is very possible we go undefeated just like FSU did....
There are other examples, but as you mention Dabo simply will not play this pay-me game and why should he if he does not agree with it.
This is a big year for Clemson with all this portal/transfer crap.... Sincerely hope Clemson goes undefeated which would included beating those Dawgs in their own backyard. Then all those yapping heads might calm down and move on to other things.
Dabo is doing it his way, if you do not like it simply get over it.

If I heard that right, there are 3 types of guys in the portal…
1. Guys that aren’t good enough to play for Clemson
2. Guys that have been tampered with and have signed NIL deals with other schools before they even enter the portal
3. Guys who are just looking to get what they can get and we are never going to win that war
So maybe this is out of context because this is part of the interview, but in summary, we aren’t going to use the portal because all the players good enough to play are a) tampered goods or b) cost too much. Is that right?
I’m not doubting that it’s true.
But if tampering is so rampant, then we need to hire a top flight PI (discretely) and catch a couple of offending coaches in the act and throw it out there on Twitter. I vote we start with this Norvell and Ryan Day - humble suggestion

Day, Kiffin, and Norvell are primary tampering suspects. I think Dabo largely nails the state of things. What's gonna be potential backlash is the implication 2/3 of players are on the take, so lots of programs are cheating. Which I think is obviously true.

When did everyone become so chicken ####? What happened to the US against the world mentality? Man Dabo should be looking at his own fan base to motivate his guys. It's an easy speech, "they don't believe that we got what it takes to win in this locker room, not the national media, not UGA, FSU, NC St, not the local media, not even our own fans, no one outside of this locker room believes in the guy next to you, but we do. We know what we've got in this room and they don't, time to show them. Us vs everyone."

that are entering the portal are doing it because they are getting a lot of money (deal already struck, otherwise known as tampering), or they are looking for a big deal as far as money. We aren't getting either of those guys. We don't have the money that high bidders do and we aren't going to tamper. At least I sure hope not.
