Or are we just hoping for the best?
We have every right to talk up the hire of Garrett, and the hopefulness that the Riley/Klubnik combination may bring us. But I re-watched some of the TN game and it reminded me just how poorly our defense matched up against them. It wasn't even close. Our D was over-whelmed. Our DC was out-coached by their OC, and they pushed our DL around like we were JV. Would love to hear some takes on how much better you think we'll be on the DL this year, and why.

I wish Bresee would have come back for a full year healthy..... We won't miss Myles one bit...too lazy to be a great in the Clemson legacy of DLs. We have a lot of exp and P Woods is a Fridge Perry type impact DL.

I agree with your comments on myles but I'm not sure Bresee even starts had he come back. No disrespect, just think we'll be that good at DL.

Myles was much better than he was given credit for. Not a sack monster but anchored that end spot and pressured a ton. Will be a stud in NFL.

We were all so pre-occupied with dj, streeter and the terrible offense that the sub par defense got a complete pass. Heck we gave up 31 to………never mind.

The D wouldn't have had to be on the field as much. 8 for something pass completion doesn't cut it. Such a wasted game... If only we could have driven to the 40 and let BT win the game...he would have been a legend.

I can't say for sure but that team did not look like a team that really wanted to be there. Tennessee seemed to come out like they had something they wanted to prove and they played that way. It just seemed there was a stark difference in motivation between the 2 teams that day.

Yep, it would have been really hard putting everything you had on the line with the QB they had seen fail so many times with lesser teams, IMO our defense won most of our games during DJ's time behind center!!!

an SEC team. Truth is our D couldn't hold up against an offense missing their elite QB and best WR. Granted it was a very, very good offense with those two players so probably still a pretty darn good offense with their backups, but our D still got beat.

TBH no one knows. On paper we should be a top ten defensive but we know the game isn’t played on paper. So if everyone plays to their capabilities and Wes is as good as he was advertised then we should be a top 10 defense again.

Depends totally on how well we avoid injuries and how well players develop. All the pieces are in place for the team to represent the university in a first class way. I’m betting that they will. But, I’m a weirdo.I believe in Clemson 100%. Go Tigers

I have been saying since January that unless our defense gets better, it will not matter if our offense improves. It was not about coaching about Notre Dame last year because they totally whipped us. It was not about coaching in the Tennessee game because they were just so much faster than our defense was. I have no idea what happened against South Carolina but we just apparently thought the game was over at halftime.
We should be better on both sides of the ball but will we have any kicking game and that is my concern.

Well our kicking game disappeared versus UT... Potter choked... maybe those kicks put some pressure on them and we win had he hit them?

and couldn't finish any drives (these two generally go hand in hand). We settled for 5 FG attempts and only scored one TD. Two of the FGs we missed were 55 and 49 yards. Yes Potter was really good at making long FGs last year, but relying on a college kicker to make 50 yard FGs is not a recipe for success.
We also lost by 17, not 3, so blaming the loss on a couple of missed FGs seems misguided.

Potter did not choke. Yes, he missed the field goals, but choking is missing a 32 yard field goal with W seconds left in the game.

With DJU and Brandon Streeter the defense knew they were in for a looooong tiring game ever time they played. With Streeter calling the O and a QB who can’t throw a football, it was 3 quick outs and the Defense was back on the field. Gassed for an entire season, the defense most definitely didn’t want to be there.

Is he fighting back on his own merit, or is he crying to the mods because he's getting "bullied" on a message board? It's pretty sad when the mods have to spend their day dealing with snowflakes who feel they're getting abused on a message board.

We had the ball for 36:30 minutes against Tenn

The defense was only on the field for 23:30 and 66 plays so that doesn't apply to THIS game.
We just got beat on a play per play basis. Our offense ran 100 plays but couldn't do anything with them. We averaged like 4.5 yards per play (which is quite bad) and really couldn't break any long ones at all.
Defensively, we stopped the run but allowed 9 yards per pass to a depleted Tennessee passing game missing its two best players.
And that's kind of my issue with the defense last year. Too frequently we allowed teams to succeed in doing what they really wanted to do. ND was able to bully us on the LOS and run very effectively all game, and Wake. SC, and Tenn all carved us up through the air.

I watched the offense from that game, they were running in untouched through the AGap several times. Klubnik was getting hammered. The OL was lost in pass pro that game.

Our defense will be better because our backups are better than the NFL draft picks they will be replacing, and our coordinators will be better now that they have a year of being DCs under their belts.
Based on post-spring game observations here, our defense is incredibly talented and will be one of the best in the nation next year.

Wes probably learned some things, but how will that really translate to the field, Idk. I'm concerned to a point, but think our secondary being more balanced (Makuba back to his true position and healthy), our first year guys with another summer of strength and conditioning as well as help from some of our incoming guys should all have some impact. Bryan was hurt, sick and heartbroken, which didn't help. Myles, idk what to say there. XT, if he can stay healthy should be a missile off the edge and we have even more starting depth up the middle with PW who can also play DE.
They have to want it like 2018. Pure and simple, there was a feeling of off-schedule all season last year and really the year before. I hope the adjustments made will be what this team needed.

1. Wesleychick is not BV, and he never will be. Defense is coaching strategy and prep. But it's more recruiting, adrenalin, and animal instincts. BV did it on the field. He had it. And Wes never will. Wes will need help. 2. Nick Eason brings the adrenalin and the help to the table all day long. 3. Last year was a downer. Half the fan base knew the Offense was DOA. A combination of QB, OC & WR malaise was anticipated. The pain on Defense was not. D-Line had injuries & worse. LB's were played out of position most of the year. Good guys & even better players B. Carter & T. Simpson were flopped between Will & Sam pre-season and then back again late in the year. It hurt the team and cost Simpson on draft position. An experiment that failed. It happens. 4. Defensive backfield. Injuries, lack of development & youth. Davis & Greene are gone. S. Jones has improved but still a question mark. Mukuba at CB did not work. Wiggins can be a star. Lukus & Pride have reps & potential. Terrell, Lewis & Oliver bring potential. A healthy Mukuba is back at S. Mickens is healthy. What can Venables & Covil add? 5. Yes. There are questions. But Dabo has sent a message. The Offense is in good hands. Star OC hands. Add a high quality starting QB and a new playbook. The Defense to be led by Carter, Trotter, Mukuba, TD13, possibly XT and possibly top player P-Woo can be reborn. I like our chances to win the ACC & make the playoffs. Not a given. But a good shot. We will be much improved. Go Tigers!

Good post. The LBs are our strong suit. I honestly believe that the DL will be solid with Woods in the mix. I was around when Perry made an impact as a freshman.
We do need our secondary to step-up. Mickens is our stud. What the heck happened to Mukaba will remain a mystery. It wasn’t just his elbow, or when he played CB. He looked lost at times.
I think the defense will be better. Offense, I hope so too!

We held them to 375.
Edit to include: Your statements, that we didn't match up well against them defensively, and our D was overwhelmed, are incorrect. Statistics bear this out. You have allowed the final score to influence your evaluation of facts. The fact is our defense held the number one offense in the country to just 375 total yards, 151 under their average. That directly contradicts your assertion.
We lost by 17, and it wasn't fun, but it wasn't for the reasons you stated.

That number 1 offense was w/o their starting QB and the nation's best WR (Biletnikoff winner) Jalin Hyatt. If they play it moves those numbers.

Forget the fact that we were starting a freshman QB…

who had never started a game before and we still managed to out gain Tennessee by a significant margin. His point was our D was dominated. They weren’t. And you making excuses for why we weren’t dominated further proves my point.

You pointed out the Clemson D held the nation's best offense to 151 yards under their average. You don't think TN playing with Hooker and Hyatt changes those stats? I haven't made any point about Clemson's freshman QB starting his first game or Clemson's offensive output.

His point: Clemson D was overwhelmed. My point: The Clemson D was not overwhelmed. Your point: The Clemson D was not overwhelmed, but let me explain why.
You agree with me. He made a dumb post based on emotion, not stats. You want to discuss with him what could have been had both teams been at 100%, be my guest. It doesn’t change the fact his point was not predicated on that and is not supported by data.

Clemson played without Murphy, Simpson, Mickens, XT, we all

know the Bresee deal - seems like we had another player or 2 out on D or limited snaps. Trying to analyze a bowl game is irrelevant except for playoff games where teams are playing at as full strength as possible.

I think our defense will be greatly improved in consistency. I think Goodwin is still a good hire. He did get outcoached, but that happens. Even Venables had games where we looked awful. I also know that we had many injuries. Our secondary was especially overclassed. If XT can stay healthy finally and Davis and Woods up the middle, we will have a very good defense. Give Goodwin a chance, I think he will be very good. We certainly give some of our coaches years to prove themselves in other sports.

Not much hope from me. The defense got worse from 2 seasons ago to last season. How? How can you go from top 10 to barely top 25 when you’re offense is much much better

Not forgotten, TN O dominated our D. They did it with several key O out for the game!

They didn't come close to dominating our D. We held them to 151 yards under their season average on offense. And we had more offensive yards than they did, by over 100 yards. We had 14 more first downs and dominated in time of possession. In fact, we allowed 334 yards per game on average, and we held the #1 offense in the country to just 375 yards.

and 8 punts.
Funny in a queer sort of way, 2 ACC teams made them punt more than any SEC team could.
Clemson suffered some busts/chunk plays which need to be cleaned up.

There is no denying our defense did not live up to its full potential last year. I’ll see how this year plays out before I really weigh in.

prolific in the country. Even BVs D struggled when faced with extreme firepower.
The D did underachieve last year though...

Just expect to be the worst team in CFB and you’ll be fine. Riley, Cade, or Dabo can’t save this poorly put together team. Our good days are behind us and never coming back.

Everything we did on defense was to cover our weakness, that shouldn’t be the case next season. We were hurt and named the last 5-6 games in the secondary, we had guys playing out of position.
We will be healthy, with depth this season, and without DJU our defense won’t be hung out to dry the whole game.
