This was my dream car growing up though. Managed to find a white one with the bubble covers and all, mint, for 4k, and had cash in hand I then showed up to the dude's house in Anderson and he had the transmission splayed out in the front lawn, insisting he would have it all back together and working, so I passed.

My older sister's first car was a Datsun 240Z. I was so jealous because I was driving a 1963 chevy truck that my Dad had let me drive to high school and to work after school. Here I was a young stud of a football player (at least in my mind) driving this old jalopy of a truck with very little paint and a three on the tree manual transmission. It just was not fitting of my perceived coolness status. My sister would take every opportunity to go speeding by me on our way to school in her little sports car.
Well the tables were about to be turned. When I received my acceptance letter to Clemson University in the summer of 1983 my parents decided that I need more reliable transportation to get me to and from school. I suggested maybe a Datsun 280Z would be a viable form of transportation. My parents took it under consideration.
I remember it like it was yesterday. There I was slaving away at Community Cash grocery store stock piling all my cash away for my first year of college. The manager said I had a call in the break room. I never had any calls while I was at work and was concerned that someone would be calling me at work. It was my older sister on the phone. I asked her what was the matter, and she sounded down and told me my parents had just bought me a 1980 vette!
I couldn't get home fast enough! I finally had the car of my dreams to drive to the school of my dreams! that old Chevy truck was about to explode before I came sliding into our driveway. I headed around to the back of the house and there it sat in all its glory!
A turd brown 1980 Chevy Chevette!
My sister still laughs about it to this day.

could have gotten another color? I'll bet that one was discounted, just because of the color.
My wife's brother had one of those things. The floor shifter literally fell off in his hand as he was parking it in their yard one time. Lucky that is where it was when that happened!

Yeah my Dad bought it from a man he worked with for a good price, so I would like to think if he had bought one from the dealership he would have gotten a different color😄
It had low mileage and my parents didn’t have to worry about me getting involved in the street racing culture 😂 I remember when I would accelerate to get on I-85 the air conditioner would cut off because it was too much strain on that 1.6 L motor!

"Chevette".....and all I saw was "Turd Brown".......and then I saw Chevette.....At 65 years old ....I feel your pain......But,I assume your parents were doing the best they could. Look on the bright side....You could have killed yourself in a real "Vette"....

Yeah my parents were the best and they knew that I didn’t need a fancy car to leave in a parking lot at Clemson for four years! I needed to grow up a bit before I had a car with any kind of power. They rewarded me for my graduation from Clemson with with a 300zx turbo!

I bought (and still have) a 1971 that I acquired when this car was introduced in 1970
The dealers only got one a month and I waited for nine months to get mine.
My dad was irate that I bought a Jap car!
Still have this one but it needs help … and parts ain’t easy.

I owned one of those (280Z) in the 70's. Metallic gold color. Bought it new. It was a beast. Got rid of it when body started rusting thru.

Both beautiful. That Jag seems like a lot of maintenance. I have a 1974 F100 longbed. I like it. I realize that people want the shortbeds as far as collectors. I like mine though. Anyway, those care cool cars right there. I am not sure what car I would get if I could have whatever I wanted.

My older brother made a hot rod out of a '46 Ford coupe, same basic body shell.

The trunk of that thing was big enough to smuggle a whole high school class into a drive in movie.

I like the ‘40 Ford too! My dream is to have a fully restored 1978 Bronco one day.
