Boys from Oregon headed to Clemson!!

Greetings to all the Clemson faithful!!
We are headed to the Syracuse/Clemson game this weekend on our annual boys weekend trip that we refer to as the "Fall Cathedral Tour".
Some quick background. There are four of us, three Oregon State Beaver fans... and one Duck fan (but we let him come with us anyways). This is the 16th year we have made this trip - we pick a different college football stadium every year. Our goal is simple. We want to experience gameday with true fans of the school we are adopting. We come in blazing the home team's colors, drink with the fans at the local watering hole Friday, tailgate with our new people Saturday, and generally treat the trip as if we were alumni that haven't back in 20 years.
The list of stadiums we have visited includes: Penn State, Tennessee, Alabama, Mizzou, Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas A &M, South Carolina (how does anyone even become a fan of SC??!!), Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Mississippi State, Georgia, LSU, and ND. (in no particular order)
The great experiences could hardly be tallied, but here are a few over the years:
Holding the banner the players go under at Auburn Golf cart tour of the behind the scenes at ND Locker room tour at Penn State Picture on the field with Chief Osceola at Florida State Rented an RV and parked it next to the stadium at Alabama Moonshine out of a mason jar at Tennessee Turtle soup at LSU White out at Penn State ... the list goes on and on!!
Unquestionably, the very best part of the trip is the people we meet!! What we have learned is that there is no better way to really experience a gameday, than by immersing ourselves in the tailgating!
So a few questions: 1. What can we not miss while we are in Clemson? What do we absolutely have to experience? 2. All of the above is really a precursor to this ask. We would love to join/stop by your tailgate if you were interested in talking college football with some true fans! Anybody game to let us crash your party?
Thanks so much in advance for any input!! Can't wait to watch us destroy Syracuse!!

I have no doubt you are right... night games are our favorite for sure. Unfortunately, you just never know game times, or for that matter how good the matchup will be when we book the trip. We feel really lucky that Syracuse is undefeated this year, they could easy be a sub .500 team!

with comments like "how does anyone even become a fan of SC?" you'll fit right in around here and be welcomed with open arms.
Here are a few recommendations:
1 - It's Homecoming, so walk out to Bowman Field and check-out the Homecoming displays (Friday night and Saturday morning).
2 - Have some Bar-B-Que at the Smokin' Pig in Pendleton (it's only about a 10 minute drive from campus).
3 - Knock-back a few cold ones at the Esso Club.
4 - 90 minutes before kickoff, Tiger Band has pep rally in the amphitheater.
5 - Check-out Tiger Walk which takes place two hours before kickoff in the parking lot behind the west end zone. This is when the team gets off the buses and walks to the team entrance in the WestZone of Memorial Stadium.
6 - Be in your seats in time to see "The Most Exciting 25 Seconds in College Football", as the Tigers rub Howard's Rock and run down the Hill (about five minutes before kickoff).
7 - Walk out on the field after the game (it's a Clemson tradition so it's OK) and take pictures with Howard's Rock at the top of The Hill.
Have fun and welcome to Clemson.

You're off to a good start! I hope y'all enjoy the trip, it should be a pretty good environment Saturday despite the noon kickoff.

Stop by Sloan Street Tap Room. Best beer prices. Jimmy Howard runs the place. He just turned 80 earlier this year.

The things you would like to see and do. Because of the early start, there will be some things that will only have time for after the game.

Jimmy is the son of legendary Clemson coach Frank Howard, who once had a rock used as a doorstop in his office someone picked up from Death Valley, CA, and brought back to him. It was in his way and he asked one of the office workers to get rid of it. The next thing he knew, they had put it on top of a pedestal inside the football stadium, so he came up with the story to tell the players that any players that were going to give him a 110% could rub his rock, but those who weren't to keep their filthy hands off his rock. The rest is history.

early morning to your bodies.
We do tailgate rather well, as it is necessary due to there only being two roads in and out of Clemson. So I'd recommend inviting yourselves to a couple tailgates. If you are wearing another teams colors, you'll get offered anyway, since Clemson fans like to show hospitality.

Welcome Gentlemen You Will Not Be Disappointed
Oct 19, 2022, 1:23 PM
|

Clemson tailgates will welcome you with open arms. Do wear at least 1 Piece of Beaver/Duck gear. Things that we always enjoy over 30 years of games:
1) Esso Club Bar - Do it Friday night and/or before and after game. It's only 500 yards to stadium. 2) Tiger Town Tavern - Another Tiger staple...Friday night rocks 3) Tiger Walk - 2 hours before kickoff on West side of stadium the team walks thru tailgate to stadium 4) Gathering at the Paw - At EVERY game conclusion fans are welcomed to the field to mingle. This is not a storming, despite every network knowing this for 20 years. Go mingle with crowd and team. Then walk up the hill on the East end and see Frank Howards Rock at top of hill 5) Smokin Pig BBQ - Nationally recognized, get some http://thesmokinpigsc.com/ 6) Campus - is East of Stadium and very walkable. Hit main Bowman field as this is homecoming and the float/display https://alumni.clemson.edu/events/homecoming/ 7) Be seated to watch team run down the hill. Get to seats for this game by 11:15. I would hit stadium gates at 11ish
Remember during Tiger Rag (Fight Song) when the fans spell Clemson. They pause after the "O" for one beat so if so inclined pause for 1 beat after the letter O https://youtu.be/4roz3vV5ul0?t=105
Have a Blast............Go Tigers!

It took 18 years for Clemson to make it to the top of the list?????
Gotta hit the Esso Club Friday night or after the game. Since it is a noon game I would recommend after the game Saturday. Make sure you are in the stadium at least 40 minutes prior to the game to see the Victory Walk and of course you have to see the team run down the hill 5 minutes prior to kickoff. Tiger Walk goes through the parking lot 5 at the west end of the stadium and it happens 2 hours prior to kickoff.

Funny you mention that...
The equation that goes into making this weekend work includes lots of factors. Family plans... kids sports... hunting weekends... tickets to OSU/UO games...is there an NFL game close on Sunday? Expected matchup... so many factors!!

the Flacons and the Panthers.
While the Falcons are in Cincinnati, the Panthers are at home against Tampa Bay (1:00 PM kickoff). Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte is only about a two hour drive from Clemson. The team sucks so getting tickets shouldn't be a problem.

Across the street from The Rock is the Memorial Park which will give you a good feel for why the game venue is called Memorial Stadium). Most of us older grads have a few friends memorialized there ( the "fallen" from Clemson have their names inscribed on stones of the memorial. . For a good feel of the students, check out downtown before or after the game :Tiger Town Tavern and/or The Study Hall. They will be filled with the young and the young at heart. When The Study Hall was much smaller (in the 60s) I rode my horse (which I had near Clemson for my lasts semester) and tied him up to a parking meter just outside the door. Watched with amusement and some concern when a drunk began talking and touching "Bo" ( short for P.G.T.A. Beauregard ).
I'm sure you will get lots of suggestions but those are mine. Welcome to Clemson.

you visit. Most of what you need to see or do is listed above but I'll add (& repeat) a few more:
1. Walk the campus or at least drive around and take it all in. 2. Walk downtown, visit the homecoming floats then visit the shops and bars like Tiger Sports Shop, Tiger Town Tavern, Mr. Knickerbockers, TD's, Sloan St. etc. Downtown (and the campus) is pretty compact and an easy walk about. 3. Esso Club will be packed, grab a beer 4. Visit Hendrix Center for ice cream, get some famous Clemson Blue Cheese to take back with you. 5. A ton of people will be tailgating after the game and there will be a lot of people walking around and checking out the floats. 6. Tigerama Friday Night
Enjoy your visit and come back and see us! Go Tigers!

WELCOME!!
I know you will have a great time. I am a 1984 Clemson graduate. It is a beautiful venue for a college football game. It is a small college town that lives and breathes Tiger football. On home football game days, the population swells, and it becomes one of the largest cites in the state. While South Carolina's stadium is part of a concrete jungle (YUKE), our stadium is very picturesque. And, as you probably already know, our team's entrance has been voted the best in college football many, many times. Don't forget to get your picture taken at "Howard's Rock", and pick up a Tiger Rag at one of the stores downtown. You will be watching a game at the original Death Valley, not the secondary one at LSU! I will be unable to attend, but look forward to hearing your report of your experiences! GO TIGERS!!!

Truly, welcome to Clemson. Pretty sure you'll love it, even at noon. Agree with posts below. Smokin Pig for a meal - pork bbq is really good, but get something with the brisket as well, Esso club for football talk and refreshments, be in your seats by 11:30 or so for pregame including the running down the hill. Tiger walk, but may take you away from great tailgating. Unfortunately, my family is mia for this one, but hopefully someone will invite you, but if not, go to 2A, 2, or 1 and introduce yourself. It's homecoming and Bowman field displays are neat - allow 30-45 minutes pre-pregame. One neat tradition is we don't storm the field, students and family gather at the paw on the field after every game - so work your way down and go on the field. Gives you a neat perspective, and if you beat the younguns, you might get a souvenir chin strap on wrist band. Lastly, for Saturday night, call Rick Erwins or Pixie and Bill's, tell them your story, and see if they can work you in. If staying in Greenville, there are any number of places for Sunday brunch. Don't forget Clemson ice cream, and take home Clemson Bleau Cheese. Enjoy and if you get to Mac's acting like an alumnus, do not order a milkshake on gameday or wave your hat at the end of the alma mater.
