Wes Goodwin, my impressions.

First of all, I'm afraid to post this for fear I will be misunderstood. I will say it now, and I will say it at the end. I'm a believer in Goodwin. I think he will have an outstanding career as DC at Clemson.
Now, with that said, I've watched several coaches' interviews today. (Hey, I'm retired. What else am I supposed to be doing?) Wes answers the questions very thoughtfully. He demonstrates that he has the knowledge and understanding of the game necessary to be a great coordinator.
I think he is not thought of as highly as other coaches by a portion of the fans. But, I think that is because of a combination of the following reasons: 1. He looks young. Some might even say baby-faced. 2. His mannerisms make it look like he's nervous. (He may be nervous in front of a mike. I don't think he is, but I see where his mannerisms make it seem as though he is. And, if you think he's nervous, it would be reasonable to interpret that as having lack of confidence.
Given those two things, I can see where fans would be concerned. Comparing him to Riley, for example, there is no comparison. Riley comes across as relaxed, calm and confident.
I listened to some of Goodwin's presser while looking at other pages while surfing the net. Just listening to him, he is more impressive than he seems to be if you are watching him. If you are one of those guys who isn't sold on him as DC, I would encourage you to just listen to him talk without watching him.
I'll say it again. I'm high on Wes. Please do not take this post as a subtle way to stab him in the back. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I’ve watched a few. He’s definitely gotten better in front of the mic. I believe Venables when he said the man is a genius. I also believe he never once thought about the interview and media portion of being a DC for a major college program. He has way more to learn about THAT part of coaching than he does the with player/on field part.

I would also add...
- Following Brent Venables is about as an impossible job as there is. He was everything you wanted for a DC (Smart, Instinctual, Fiery, on Edge, passionate, Scary, relentless, film junkie, etc, etc).
BV looked like a man with just barely enough control to his rage and passion,...like someone who was about to whoop everything in sight about a moment's notice.
Following that is simply unfair. LOL!
I think Wes has attributes that are off the charts that we can't see (knowledge of the game, creativity, play recall from memory, ability to diagnose potential plays on the fly).
The only thing I worried about was losing the edge that BV would bring every single day, every minute, every single play. That was my only fear.

He is clearly not comfortable with a mic in front of him. But, I doubt he ever thought that he would be thrust into the defensive coordinator position for a team with a national brand.
He does, however, look very comfortable and confident on the sidelines and the players seem to love him. That's all that matters to me.

I think you are spot on Bretfsu. Like many I trust Dabo and others who say he is a FB genius. He doesn't have the stature and intensity of BV, but he has to be who he is. He is still learning parts of being a DC like talking to the media and most importantly the leader of our defense.

What you talking about Willis. Jk, know what you're saying but I could identify with Danny.
Don't think Bret would ever be perceived as being negative. I don't question any of his football iq. My only concern is his in game adjustments and more specifically, in series adjustments. That said, I wouldn't know because I don't have the knowledge on whether or not a player(s) just messed up the D call, or if it was scheme. With CBV, you kinda knew if a player was not getting it done.

As if Brent Venables did not act like he had a head full of mescaline, running up and down the sidelines spitting his gum and knocking over officlas, with Elliot sitting calmly in the booth. I think you may have discovered that defensive coordinators do more game day coaching than an OC, thanks, I had never noticed this before.

are the same people who weren't sold on Streeter and that was largely because Dabo promoted them from within the program as opposed to conducting a national search to find the best candidate possible to hand-over the keys to the Cadillac. This young guy was effectively gifted a defense that was consistently, year after year, one of the nations best under BV. That understandably made some folks a little uneasy.

I wasn't sold on Streeter and felt he needed to go by end of season. I definitely had and still have my concerns about Wes never being a DC before and can he maintain top ranked defense.
But never had the anxiety about Wes as I did with Streeter. I think the main reason is we have some real coaching experience on defense where Eason, Hall or Reed could step up and call the defense. If Streeter got Covid during the season, who would have called the offense: Spiller, Austin, Grisham??? None of them are known as offensive gurus therefore it all rested on Streeter who was also a first time OC. I think just too many unproven coaches on the Offense.

I am one of the fans that is on the wait and see wagon. He lacks intensity and passion for DC imo. The killer instinct is something i never saw last year and he was content to play bend but dont break defense, i am not a fan of this style. That said he had alot of injuries and off field issues that left him with very little depth. Id like to see him take a big step forward this year and let the DL and LBs really loose.

after being 8th, 14th, and 5th in the prior 3 years. It wasn't terrible by any means, but not as good or dominant as we are accustomed to. A lot of people freaked out over that. Add in the fact that Goodwin doesn't fit the "type", and was hired from within, and he was an easy target. He may turn out not to be the man for the job, but I don't think last year was nearly enough to justfy any such conclusion.
Expectations are extremely high at Clemson, and that's a good thing. The downside of that is it creates unrealistic (not just high) expectations, amongst many fans who are always beotching about something or demanding that somebody be fired. Sure, if our defense doesn't improve this year, or takes a step backward, then yes, maybe it's time to start thinking about a DC that has a square jaw, a deep gravely voice, a mean stare and spits fire and has been successful at a high level. Until then, I'm on board with Goodwin.

I think most of the defense’s woes really were the result of a totally inept Offense that couldn’t stay on the field nor play very well against the better teams we faced. Granted we won games, but not the big ones against great teams

I dont care how a coach looks physically, i think huepel showed killer instinct as a hc and he looks like a goober. The defensive line play and lb play last year scared me, they went from disruptive to getting blown off the ball by ND in a season. That same front 7 beat on UGA for 4 quarters and gave up 3 points the year before, the big change was scheme and intensity. Like i said injuries and off field issues may have been the reason for that so im going to wait and see. Ill say this coach Goodwin was solid with half time adjustments most games last year so i think he can adapt and think on the fly, lets season him up before throwing him away.

I am 100% certain that BV and Clemson has always played bend but don't break defense from the moment he arrived. The difference being they did not break often at all and our offense was good enough to score plenty of points most of the time. Look at so many of the big games Clemson played while BV was here, other teams moved the ball but just could not get touchdowns which is what it takes to beat Clemson when there is some hint of an Clemson offense.... ask OSU who kept kicking FG's thanks to Tanner Muse and that smothering defense around the goal line....I mean how many goal line stands are there in the last 10 years, seems like a ton but I have no time to look into it.
I do however agree that last year the defense did not have the aggressive style. I honestly think last year was tough psychologically on the team with new coordinator, injuries, familial situations, just a mixed bag of things that can and will derail players. The offense struggled which put more emphasis on the defense to stand tall. The offense and defense need to mesh to be successful and I hope/think/feel we will be much better on both sides of the ball this year.
Go Tigers!!

and I agree he can flourish with Clemson. He has 1 year under his belt, following Venables is not an easy task. Jimmy Greenbeans was unique and exactly what Clemson needed to help them achieve the great success that has come over the last 10+ years.
Now Wes will need to establish himself this year. He has an outstanding returning group. Lost some key contributors but overall this group could be one of our best. COULD being operative word. Gameplans, schemes, blitzes, zones, angles and tackling are what set the best apart from the average. I think he knows his players, he knows how to utilize them best, and now I hope he is able to get all the guys to go ALL-IN and dominate opposing offenses.

From everything I have seen and heard, Coach Goodwin is a defensive savant, however for those who don't get to spend enough time around him, he comes across as a bit overwhelmed and at times awkward. Really reminds me of Bud Foster who was during his day, the best DC there was considering the talent that he had. I say put Goodwin in the booth and let him do his thing. I hope he turns our offense loose, we could be very scary good this year on that side of the ball.

I like Goodwin and give him a pass on overall defensive rankings last year. The abysmal offense did nothing to help his side stay fresh. It's a lot easier to be aggressive on defense when you know a blown gamble can be overcome by your offense. Goodwin has not had the luxury of playing loose and not worrying about giving up a score during his tenure. He knows he had to throw shut outs in almost every game to keep us in it. The offense was just not good enough to dig us out of any type of hole. If Goodwin is the genius, they say he is, then he knew this all too well. Even us non-geniuses new our offense was a hinderance last year.

Don't blame the offense. It's one thing to be a genius and another thing entirely to motivate and communicate effectively with players with AUTHORITY during the game. This man took a what was supposed "great" defense and imposed an hesitant, unaggressive personality that was not consistently successful. We have to have a lot better this year.
