If we are the ONLY ones not doing it except the Military schools, we gotta be missing the mark somewhere, right? Didn't we hire someone to monitor the portal recently?

to prove the he can win and not use the portal. On the surface, it ain't good. But it is what it is and I don't expect him to change a thing.

When he said he hasn't accomplished all he had in mind when he took the job, he could not have been envisioning today's landscape, but his response is likely what he was referring to. Competing for a championship (being in that position) without transfers-as-strategy will require a different type of program. There is legit debate on whether it is possible. Given his history, I'm in.

hole in the roster with a transfer or two, but buying a mercenary team leads to exactly what FSU, Colorado, and a few other notables experienced this past season. The shame of it is that the Clemson program displays an unwavering commitment of loyalty to players in a generation of kids who don't appreciate that in the least.

A more difficult task than in 1985, for sure.

We manage to find more than our share of the type, but for sure it's hard. Knowing Dabo, he would say that makes recruiting and personal development that much more important. His desired end results will remain as they are. What are those, exactly? Without a sit down with him over a beer or 4, there is no way to know. It is not hardheadedness, but is in the desired result and methods. He does not publicly say a lot about the details of those, only the broad strokes.
Alabama doesnt win a couple of their NCs without key position portal intakes. OSU the same. UGA, as of now, seems to be the only one with enough 5 star recruits to not have holes to fill. Dabo seems to want to intake only for depth or in the case of "we aint got nobody".

Clemson has built its recruiting success by being different and emphasizing its culture and "family" values. We still recruit at a fairly high level and keep almost all started from transferring. My sense is that players take a bit of an NIL discount to play here because of the culture and chance to play on the biggest stage. If we embrace the portal, there is a decent chance that goes out the window and we have to pay-to-play like everyone else.
I can't imagine the current NIL/transfer regime exists in another five years. If that's true, there is value in staying the course.
Do I believe that? I'm not sure.
I will say it drives me up the wall to see Clemson talk about scouting the portal and recruiting the portal. It's clear we don't actually care about it. We should stop pretending.

I don't think it's a case of not caring about or not scouting the portal.

I think we have probably made overtures to players before, but as soon as the conversation turns to paycheck, Clemson is out. Factor that with our commitment to developing from high school, and the fact that 'needs' as the coaching staff sees them don't equate to 'needs' as fans see them. In Dabo's philosophy, we would also be looking for guys that would have 2 or 3 years left and not the one-and-dones. And then, on top of that, there are probably a lot of guys that our staff sees in the portal that they feel won't contribute on the field or won't fit the culture. All that to say I'm pretty sure we scout the portal as hard as any other team, but we're not finding guys that check EVERY ONE of those boxes. And for Dabo, a transfer would probably need to check EVERY ONE of those boxes.

from there, but they don't go in there with a fistful of NIL cash. All of the good players in the portal are having NIL cash waved at them so Clemson doesn't get far.
It's like cruising the strip on a moped. Ain't nobody you want hoppin on.

I get what you and RH are saying. But if portal recruiting is all about money

and Clemson isn't willing to pay that money, then I don't think Clemson actually cares about recruiting the portal. And that may be fine.
