What coaches did you hate on the field but respected later when they retired,

maybe because of what they gave back to the sport/s, motivational talks.
Tough question, but I got:
1 - Holtz 2 - K 3 - Dean 4 - Bobby Knight 5 - Spurrier

I do some pretty decent impersonations - cocktail party fun stuff. I did a pretty good Spurrier. The trick to get in character was to place my two front teeth on top of my lower lip and then make a face like you just ate a lemon and smelled a fart at the same time.
Later on, when the Murdoch trial was taking place, I automatically started doing Murdoch. I thought to myself, this impersonation reminds me of something. I realized it was basically a cross between Steve Spurrier and Sling Blade (which is almost scary if I do it when my head is shaved for summer).

to like Spurrier. He and Dabo created so much interest in rivalry with their antics that I thought it was planned.

And the cherry on top is petitioning the NCAA to have his bad season removed from his W-L record and put on his asst coach because he had a “bad back”.

Spurrier.
I lost respect for Lou Holtz when he went to TV, which was pretty hard to do since he was a filthy gamecock.
I'd like to see someone punch K in his rat fink face.
Dean, I thought that thing he did with sending all of his lettermen $200 upon death was cool, but his employer is a big reason the ACC has such bad TV deals now.
Bobby Knight, I never didn't respect him. I thought his ways were a bit much, but meh.
Spurrier, the hate for him is not disrespect. He obviously knew how to do some stuff right in college football. Had he found a better job than SCAR ole Nicky boy may not have as many national championships. I'd buy him a beer because of the gift he gave in leaving SCAR a smoldering heap. I wouldn't buy him a liquor drink because of 5 in a row.

The only reason the ACC has bad TV deals is because they

have less than half the viewers of the SEC/ BIG.
When the deals were signed everyone jumped for joy. Now, after the most recent SEC/ BIG deals, everyone is pizzed.

Swofford's son and all Tar Heels for all time will be blamed for it. You keep your accurate numbers and the truth to yourself.
All of those idiots thought basketball would be the cash cow, it taint.

I don't go over there, I just recall the 90s when

when basketball was king. At least around tournament time. All this was before cable in its various forms was accessible out where I grew up.
I firmly believe nepotism and bad thinking certainly contributed to the current state of things. Not being able to have more than 2 interesting football teams at a time. Also that is a stretch since the overlap of great FSU and becoming great Clemson was only about 3 years, then they fell on their face, then we kinda did in time for FSU to be really good again. We won't talk about what happened when the QB got hurt.

In no order, Spurrier, Saban, Dean Smith, Rex Ryan.
Holtz is dishonest piece of crap, on and off the field.
