I feel like we’re just sitting here on our thumbs while other teams are capitalizing and filling holes with the portal. I know we’ve beaten it 1,000 times but seeing good players go from Bama to FSU worries me. #### the coots just picked up a decent QB from Auburn and another OL. I know it doesn’t translate to instant wins and instant success but it would make a lot of us feel better if we had some plugs to some of our roster holes. Just my two cents!

to corner Dabo on it and make him explain why Clemson is the only school in America without a portal player to make the 2 deep. Maybe even starter. It's been 5 years and no one has grew the cahonies to insist on answers to this mystery.

They could ask the question if they want, but insisting on an answer or making him explain is a different situation. Dabo doesn’t have to answer to any reporter. Or any fan for that matter. Did you catch the Mike Tomlin interview?

Come on now. It's Lord Dabo. And the answer to your question is through 2031. And it's not 10 million per year, but quite a bit more. And it's still going up. In total it's 115 million for 10 years. With Saban stepping down Dabo is now the highest paid coach in college football for schools required to release the information. USC does not release the information as they are private but best guesses put Lincoln Riley at 10 million per year plus incentives. Kirby is right on Dabo's heels at 10 years for 112.5 million putting him second. Kalen DeBoer is rumored to eventually be in the 10 million per year area but that deal is not finalized. Dabo does not answer to anyone but the BOT who in many cases are deeply involved in football details. His lawyers did one heck of job on that contract.

Other than Etienne, who has Smart brought in this year that will be a starter next year?
And, as for Etienne, the general consensus was that he wanted to be on a winning team and he sees the dumpster fire that is the gators.
In addition to that, it was strictly a bidding war between Florida, Bama and UGA. UGA won.
Do you really want Dabo getting into a bidding war to bring in a starter?

I think they felt they needed depth at WR and DL and of course a starting RB. A lot of this was based on the guys transferring out or heading to the NFL. The interesting thing is they now sit at 91 scholarships since they have added 6 transfers.

He’s brought in two receivers who might start. There is no argument against whats being said. Other teams get better and add starters while we add 18 year olds that take time and development

Because it’s put up or shut up time now. Some thought that Dabo possibly leaving opened up the door to get someone who will fully use NIL and the portal. What do we do if we’re sitting here in the same place after the next two seasons if we go 8-4 to 7-5 over them???

And I agree with how he runs the program 100%. He is a leader and not a follower. Perhaps 5 years down the road, we will look back and see his vision. I'm all in on the theory of not contributing to the destruction of my favorite sport. I'm hoping for the best, but anticipating the worst. We have the best culture in college football (regarding loyalty and how things are suppose to be done) - now we just need to convert that into more wins. Here's to a CFP playoff appearance next season. Cheers!

Well, we are already over the 85 limit. If we bring someone in from the portal, how do we handle that with the players that have been here for few years and now we are plugging someone in from somewhere else ? We will lose integrity and also more players to the portal because they are being replaced by outside players. It's a tough decision by our coaches.

How many of those were on the 2 deep depth chart?

How many were starters?
Long before the portal kids who were buried on the depth chart left school. They had to sit out a year or go to a lower division. Now, those kids on the 3 deep chart at Clemson can go to Charlotte or South Alabama or Southern Miss and maybe even start.

Collin’s probably seen his stock dropping with what was coming in and you never know if poaching and $ played a role. Some just seek more playing time, but Dabo does a #### good job of retention overall in comparison to some other schools we play.

It just has a very low chance of working.
Instead of plugging holes in our roster with talented and experienced players, we are plugging them with young backups. This ensures that we will always be a young team.
As for the team culture angle, assuming that all transfer portal players have bad attitudes or are bad people is unfair. Plus, if our team culture is so strong, why are we afraid of guys coming in from the outside? A strong culture won’t crumble if one or two guys don’t turn out to be who we thought they were. We know this is true, because we have had high school recruits who were bad apples and they didn’t kill our culture.

You think it has a very low chance of working. You are entitled to your opinion.
Many think it can, and has worked. Doesn’t mean we are cultists or that we worship Dabo as you frequently state. Just means we are hopeful that what we have seen Dabo and the football program do in the past will be repeated.
You also said you think our bball team will make the tourney this year. That shows you understand the concept of hope because where basketball is concerned that is really all we have. We don’t have demonstrated accomplishments to justify it. And in that case I hope you are right.

Totally different situations, Clemson and FSU.

Norvell came to FSU and the talent level was not good enough to have a winning season in the Sunbelt. The culture was worse than the talent.
Three months after being hired, COVID hits. He and his coaches couldn't go out and meet players and coaches and start developing relationship. Fist two years recruiting was better than with Taggart, but not good. Most 3 stars weren't interested in even visiting, much less signing a LOI. No 4 stars and no five stars were interested.
He had no choice but to use the portal. If he had built through HS recruiting he would have been fired after two or three years. (Remember, just two seasons ago he was 0-4 including a loss to Jax. St.)
Recruiting got better last year. Not great, but better. This year was his first really good year, finishing in the 10-15 range.
But, looking at the roster this year, the starters were really good, but the depth was young - very young. If he had not gone into the portal this year his starting LBs would be freshmen or redshirt freshmen. He would have one upper classman at WR (and the guy had to play RB in the Orange Bowl) and a bunch of freshmen or redshirt freshmen. Same on the OL. If he had not got a QB in the portal, the QB room would be Tate Rodemaker backed up by a redshirt freshman, a true freshman, and some walk on.
He had to go out and find starters, not just depth, but starters from the portal. He'll have to do it next year, but probably not quite as many as this year. It will take two more years of top 10 recruiting classes to build the depth so that when a guy graduates his replacement is on the roster.
Clemson is in the opposite situation. Dabo has built quality depth. Sure, he could go out and cherry pick one or two guys who could start, but at what cost? Who was available that would have significantly upgraded the position? And, when you bring in that guy, does someone already on your team leave?
Norvell has to use the portal in order to win 8 games. Dabo can win 10 games without the portal. That's the difference.

I can see both sides. You can't tell me there's not a OL or WR that could upgrade those rooms. Or that he couldn't have replaced the DBs he lost in the portal.
On the other hand, I can see giving a guy with a couple of NC rings benefit of doubt that he knows what he's doing. Will he end up being a victim of his own success? We'll find out.

Part of the culture, and from what I have heard from a friend that does have first hand knowledge, is that one thing his players love about him is his loyalty. Means a lot to some kids, and some kids could careless wanting to know what or how much you can give him.
Bust your butt on the practice field, do well in school and stay out of trouble then Dabo has proven he will take of them until they decide to leave. Dabo is never going to cut a young man that is doing the right thing. Love him or hate him it’s just not going to happen. To keep harping on this is futile and the folks so against his philosophy need to email or set up a time you both can get together and discuss it.

behind why Dabo hasn't used the portal! It's because, unlike most every other coach, he is not going to kick guys to the curb, just to make room for portal guys! Dabo flat out won't do that, and I can't fault him for that!
College football would be better if there were more coaches who think like Dab0!

I may be in the minority, but if getting players in the portal involve bidding a certain amount of money or making assurances about starting/playing time I have reached a point where I don't want any part of it.
