I just got back from Washington DC to Texas. I have been many times and I can never say thank you enough to all of you that served, shared your family member, or even lost a family member to keep this country of ours safe, secure and free. My father served and was POW in Korea and was not anything that he ever shared a lot about his time there. To those who suffer with memories of serving and get up every day and move on, I salute you. If anyone would like to list their service here it would be awesome to know.

America would be an infinitely better place!
But yes, our veterans are amazing. My sister is retired Air Force and my brother-in-law is dishonorably discharged from the Marines due to a traumatic head injury via IED in Iraq. My grandfather served in WWI.

My dad was in B-24 as a waist gunner. Apparently this position had the highest casualties among those bomber crews and air crews had higher casualties than infantry. Both of these were news to me.
Dad always had sinus and respiratory problems probably as a result of the high altitude missions. He did get a pilots license after the war and loved aviation. He died at a young age (46 of a heart attack). He would never talk about it.
Here is a link to the squadron website and bombardiers mission log. This guy was in my dad's crew. what 18-22 year old men went through as mentioned in the logs is amazing. Here is the link:

and only one is still airworthy as far as I know- Collings Foundation. I have been in it and seen it fly but have not taken a flight.
Very few left even in museums. I always wondered with what my dad flew through how he still loved planes but he did. He would often buy us ice cream and we'd watch the planes. His grave site is near the airport so he could watch the planes take off and land

The shortest life expectancy and highest mortality rate of all servicemen were bomber crews in Europe. It got better once they started using P 51s with Merlin engines as fighter escorts, but it was still brutal. I think the average bomber crew lived less than 30 days before fighter escorts.
The theory was all of those guns would protect bombers and they would not need fighter escorts, which didn’t have long range capability anyway, but they quickly learned that theory was wrong.

And they don’t see things differently. They’re bat #### crazy, hate America, don’t know history, don’t understand science, don’t understand facts and data, and are in general delusional and often evil people! And it is the vast majority of people in California.

I graduated in 1950 and served a year in Korea and my three older brothers served in WW ll, one in the Pacific and the other two in Europe. All were in combat and the one in the Pacific was wounded three tines.
I don't think you meant "dishonorably". People don't generally get dishonorably discharged for a traumatic head injuries.
What does California have to do with this discussion?

Don't want to pry a lot here but how did he manage a dishonorable discharge due to TBI in a war zone? Hoping that was a mistype.
Never mind, saw your response to someone else.

It was early this morning. My brain wasn’t working. I was voice texting, so maybe I said dishonorable or maybe auto correct changed what I said, which happens a lot.

My father, John Vernon Walters, served in the Army during World War II. He was a professor at Clemson prior to his service and after being discharged in 1945. Later he was in the Army Reserve and retired as a Major in the Reserves. My brother served in the US Army in the mid-50s and came back to Clemson to graduate in 1961. I served in the US Air Force from 1968-1972 during the Vietnam conflict. I was a graduate of Clemson in the class of 1967 and received my Masters degree from Mississippi State. I am proud to say I am a Veteran and I salute each of you that served in the Services of our country.

My father served in the Navy for WWII and then the Air Force for Korea and Vietnam. My two uncles were career Army and Air Force (Korea and Vietnam). I spent 9 years in the Navy in the submarine service making deterrent patrols on a missile boat out of Rota Spain and Holy Loch Scotland. For all of us, it was an honor…

Thak you for your service fellow Bubble Head. I did some time in and out of Holy Loch on the James Monroe. Then move to Kings Bay Georgia for 18 year more years on the Trident Subs. In all almost 24 years of service to this country. My father was also a fellow Bubble Head. January 1, 1960 until I retired in 2008 one of us were serving this great country on Submarines. Salute to all the fellow Veterans. This country is much better place because of you.

A cousin from Brevard on Dad's side died when the B-17 caught fire over England while forming up with other units for a mission to the Peenemunde rocket factory. He was the only one unable to exit the plane from his position as tail gunner. Was caught in severed control cables. The co-pilot and deputy mission leader couldn't get to him through the exploding ordance and oxygen bottles and was the last one out. He was survived by his wife and a son he never saw. His brother in law was stationed on the island of Tinian and was part of the ground crew getting the Enola Gay ready for its historic mission. Named his daughter Enola Gay. Another cousin from G'ville on Mom's side jumped with the 82nd on D-day, landed near an enemy unit and was captured after two days fighting. Spent nine months as a POW in Desden and managed to survive the intense bombing campaign. A distant cousin originally from Piedmont was awarded the MOH for his service in Vietnam. Earned 37 medals including eight Purple Hearts. Was one of Audie Murphy's pallbearers.

I was proud to serve on active duty in the United States Navy from August 1969 through September 1990. I have had family serve in all armed conflicts, whether declared war or not, since, and including, the Civil War (although technically as an armed enemy in that conflict, according to some). I am frequently thanked for my service, or asked if I still miss being on active duty. My response is always that it was both a privilege and honor to serve, and that I miss it every day - the fellowship, the camaraderie, and the sense of privilege to serve. R/TLM

I was in DC from last Thursday through Monday (flew back yesterday). Got a couple of “Go, Tigers” from wearing a Clemson sweatshirt while taking in some of the monuments Monday.
Served in the Air Force. Arlington was my favorite visit, by far.

by all the left hating BS. Do you see one comment slagging conservatives? You do not.
This country needs right and left to govern and a united armed forces to protect it. You don’t like it, want part of it to fall on the ocean, want to put your selfish, misguided feelings in front of your country? Then leave. Get out. We and you can do better.

I agreed we need common ground, but our differences make us stronger.

can push, pull, scrap, and work together. The constant hatred of one side vs another is ridiculous and will destroy what all of us and our loved ones fought for. Anyone he11bent on destroying one side or the other can leave, that ain’t what America is about.

I'm an Army draftee from 1969.I got sent to Fort Richardson in Anchorage instead of Nam.I worked at 19th Aviation Battalion where training missions with Huey helicopters were performed. I refueled many a Huey and enjoyed the few times I got to ride in one.

Thanks for your service. My son and daughter in law just moved up there and love it. We are flying up there later in the year.
