Top-100-rated 2019 guard Al-Amir Dawes announced a commitment to Clemson on Thursday.
Dawes (Newark, NJ) is a second 4-star guard commitment in the 2019 class, joining Atlanta, Georgia prospect Chase Hunter. Dawes is rated as high as the No. 95 prospect in the 2019 class (ESPN). He told Prep Circuit that he saw an opportunity to play early with Clemson. “Their two senior guards are leaving and that will open opportunities for me," Dawes said. "As long as I do what I have to on my end I will be able to play as a freshman.” “They are getting a gritty kid who came from nothing and someone who will play with a chip on his shoulder. He’s been doubted since he started playing basketball and they are getting a kid who will bring a lot of excitement.” Dawes visited Clemson last month and also took official visits to Providence, Seton Hall and St. John’s. He also had UConn, La Salle, Wichita State and TCU in a top-8 released last month. Dawes earned third-team honors for a Nike tournament in May, scoring 20.8 points per game with 4.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 1.5 steals and a 37 3-point shooting percentage. “Dawes has proven to be one of the most electric guards on the circuit,” one tournament writeup analyzed, “and his ability to score while remaining a valued facilitator is his biggest asset.” #ClemsonGRIT pic.twitter.com/CXpqgPwQsP
