Notes from Swinney’s Weekly Press Conference

- Swinney thinks as a first year coach TCU is good opportunity to gauge where his program is.

- On TCU offense: TCU is hardnosed offense that wants to run the ball. They have as many as 10 returning starters on offense depending on what formation they are in.

- Two goals for his defense: Stopping the run and winning on first down.

- On the lack of rushing touchdowns: “We will have to find a way to score more touchdowns but the goal is to win the game.”

- Philosophy on playing tough opponents: “I like it. The players like it and I think the fans like it… I think it’s good. It kind of gives you a measure of where you are and where you want to go. When you are a competitor you want to line up and play the best.”

- No new cases of the flu as of this morning. DE Jarvis Jenkins got sick yesterday, but the rest came down with the flu over the weekend.

- TCU was the only FBS opponent that could come to Death Valley when the Tigers relooked at the schedule last year. Swinney wanted to play a Division one team but joked he was hoping out of 120 FBS teams we could find “someone in the 80’s or the 60’s or 39.” TCU was ranked #7 last season.

- Swinney was surprised that game is not on TV. “I thought it was an interesting matchup.”

- DE Ricky Sapp has had “three really good ball games.” He is playing with a chip on his shoulder and is ranked 16th in tackles for loss.

- Fixing short yardage offense – “It’s critical errors. We have got to coach better.”

- Distance Swinney would kick Richard Jackson from: "65 or 67 (yards out) if we just had to have it. Maybe we will get a chance this year to see just how far he can kick it."

Notes from Players

- Linebacker Brandon Maye said that during the delays in the Boston College game some of the players were laying around taking short naps. “It was like we were having a sleepover.” Most of their naps were short lived as defensive coordinator Kevin Steele soon got their attention.

- Running back C.J. Spiller guaranteed that offensive lineman Chris Hairston would play against TCU. He said it was a great opportunity for Hairston to showcase his talents for NFL scouts against TCU’s All-American DE Jerry Hughes.

- Spiller is not worried about flu that has hit the Clemson football. “My immune system is pretty strong.” Spiller, however, did wear a mask at Monday’s practice as a precaution.

- Both Jacoby Ford and C.J. Spiller said the TCU’s defense reminded them of their own defense in that they are both fast and play with great effort.

- Spiller is wearing a pad in his shoe to help protect his injured toe.
