ACC Issues Statement Regarding Duke Baseball Game |
Davis Whitfield, Assistant Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference, has issued the following statement regarding Duke?s baseball game against Clemson on Sunday, April 20.
?Duke followed its institutional protocol regarding severe weather during Sunday?s baseball game against Clemson. After discussions with representatives from both schools, we support Duke?s handling of this situation as we would support other league institutions when following their inclement weather protocol. The safety of student-athletes, coaches and staff is a top priority for all of our league institutions.? Duke Statements Regarding April 20 Baseball Game Vs. Clemson Duke Department of Athletics statement on Sunday's Duke-Clemson baseball game The Duke Department of Athletics weather policy in regards to lightning involves communication from a weather service indicating that lightning is within 10 miles of the facility. Once the communication is received and verified, the protocol mandates all participants are to evacuate the field of play and seek shelter for the required window of the warning. Duke head baseball coach Sean McNally statement on Sunday's Duke-Clemson baseball game "We followed our institutional protocol for inclement weather in the proper manner. When lightning is in the area, we will not put our student-athletes, coaches or staff members, nor the student-athletes or staff members from opposing schools, at risk. The safety of those involved with the game should and will always take precedent over the contest's outcome. No one wanted to finish the game more than I did; it was not an ideal way to end a very competitive series. ACC officials have stated that institutional policies and procedures are used in conjunction with league policies for all home contests throughout the regular season."
