Clemson Defense Sparkles In Rout Of BC |

CLEMSON - Oliver Purnell wanted better defense from his Clemson basketball team Saturday night. He got it, and then some.
The Tigers scored 30 points off 20 Boston College turnovers en route to a 78-56 win over the Eagles. The game was played before an announced crowd of 10,000 at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Boston College (12-8, 3-4 ACC) shot 51 percent from the field for the game, but only attempted 39 shots (hitting 20). Clemson's full-court pressure defense was the best it's been in a while, generating the turnovers that jump-started the offense.
The Tigers (16-5, 4-3) outscored BC in the paint by a 44-24 margin.
All in all, it was a welcome sight for Purnell.
"We came out and set the tone defensively tonight, and we hadn't done that in our last couple of games," he said. "Our defense led to some easy baskets, and helped us take control of things from the very beginning."
Clemson led by just five at the half, 36-31, before quick-jumping the Eagles out of the locker room after the break.
Cliff Hammonds, starting at point guard in place of the injured Demontez Stitt, sparked a 13-2 run with seven points in a span of nearly 4:30 that jumped the Tigers' lead up to 57-42. Hammonds, who finished with 14, scored 11 of them in the decisive second half.
He also played a key role in slowing down BC point guard Tyrese Rice.
Rice finished with 17 points, three under his season average, but scored nine of them after the Tigers had taken command of the game midway through the second half.
"Cliff is the face of our program. He's the kind of kid we go out and try to recruit," said Purnell. "He does whatever you ask him to do, and tonight it was slide over and play the point and also guard one of the better players in this conference.
"Cliff is one of the most underrated players in the conference, and in the country."
The Tigers' lead would eventually swell to as many as 25. Four other players joined Hammonds in double figures:
K.C. Rivers finished with 13, James Mays with 12, David Potter 11 and Trevor Booker 10.
Booker played despite the high-ankle sprain he suffered last week at Miami. He logged 26 minutes and added seven rebounds to his night's work.
Rice was the only Eagle to reach double figures. Corey Raji had nine off the bench for BC, with Josh Southern and Rakim Sanders finishing with eight each.
Clemson is back in action this Thursday, traveling to Virginia.
NOTES
- Tonight was the first start of the year for Clemson forward Sam Perry. He scored five points and had two rebounds to go with two steals in 16 minutes. He scored Clemson's first field goal of the game.
- Trevor Booker made the start tonight after missing the last 34 minutes of the Miami (FL) game last Sunday with an ankle injury. He made his first four shots from the field tonight and finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, including six offensive rebounds. He has now started 57 consecutive games.
- David Potter scored 11 points, including nine in the second half when he made 3-3 on three-point shots. It was his high scoring game since he scored 11 against East Carolina on December 5. It was his fourth double figure scoring game of the year, the third time he has scored exactly 11.
- Clemson made 9-10 free throws this evening for a season high 90 percent from the foul line as a team. Clemson has now made 24 of its last 30 from the line over two games, 80 percent. It is the first time all year Clemson has made at least 75 percent from the line in consecutive games this year.
- Boston College made 51 percent of its field goals tonight. It marked the first time this year Clemson gave up 50 percent field goal shooting, yet won the game.
- Clemson had a 30-9 advantage in points off turnovers and had a +11 turnover margin.
- Cliff Hammonds had five steals in this game to go over the 200 mark for his career. He now has 204 and is just the sixth player in ACC history with at least 1200 points, four rebounds, 400 assists and 200 steals.
- Clemson has now committed just nine turnovers in consecutive games, tying for its season low in that category.
- Clemson is now 5-3 against Boston College lifetime, including 3-0 at Littlejohn Coliseum. The home team has won six straight in the series. All of Clemson's five wins over Boston College have been by at least double digits and four of the five have been by at least 20 points.
