Quotable Bowden: Tigers Continue Spring Workouts

Bowden on why defense looked tired after practice.

"They ran a lot of pursuit drills," Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden said.

"If you noticed they ran a whole bunch. They ran their tails off pretty good that's why they're dragging."

The offense again struggled against a defense that according to Bowden is playing well, but isn't dominating things.

"They probably got a little chewing out by their coaches," he said.

Bowden would like to see the defense pick up things

"I like to see one side of the ball, especially the defense, control the day," he said. "At some point you want to see them control the offense and the tempo and the whole success of the offense.

"We are not there yet (defensively), but we are having a little more success over there than we are offensively, but not enough where you say 'this defense is going to jump off the charts.'"

Bowden on Chris Clemmons

"Chris Clemmons had the two hits of the day," Bowden said. "I wish there were more hits. If you're going to be a zone-team - which we are ¬- then you like to see a lot of collisions.

"He jarred the ball lose, but on the back end you're looking for receivers that can hold on to the ball with pretty good collisions and these were pretty good collisions. They were ball-separating collisions, but you would like to see more (hits) other than Chris'."

on Punter Cole Chason

"I just have to figure if he is teasing me or not," he said. "That's the only thing. Is it going to go over there?"

On goal line offense, first team offense had no touchdowns down near the goal. Second team had two.

"You like to see the first-team offense run out there with a change of their body movement, temperament and body language, but we didn't see that today," Bowden said.

Injures.

Third-team center Barry Humphries may return from a high ankle sprain on Friday. Nose guard Etta Etta-Tawo had a slight sprained ankle, but he isn't expected to miss any practice time.
