We're all jumping the gun saying "Stoudt's job to lose"
Apr 13, 2014, 1:21 PM
|
|
We got to see one scrimmage. Kelly had a bad day, but it's one scrimmage after an entire session of spring practice. Watson didn't even get to play.
The coaches have been emphatic that they're all 3 so close, they can't name a starter. Coaches would love to have a clear cut starter instead of rotating all 3 among the 1's and 2's. They would love to establish some rapport and consistency with the WRs, but it has been too close to call.
I do think we learned about Kelly's maturity level. I highly doubt that is going to clearly determine who wins the job, but I do think it hurts him somewhat.
Obviously, Stoudt being a Senior is the likely starter. It's hard to argue that. But I just think it's crazy for people to say that it's "clear" who the best QB is when we've just seen one small snapshot of the many practices and workouts.

Spring Games tell us absolutely nothing...Tajh Boyd looked

incredibly awful in the Spring Game before his sophomore season. By the Fall, he was an All-ACC type of QB.
The Spring Game is for entertainment purposes only. All of these arm-chair coaches need to step away from their computers.

and beautiful long touch passes that Cole has been throwing all spring - all the highlights of the 2 live scrimmages and spring displayed those gorgeous passes. However, I hope Chad comes back and becomes the change of pace wildcat type qb, that Spurlid has used so successfully. Only this "swagcat" can pass too, just not those long beautiful touch passes like Cole! Still, I want to see the dual qb system with Cole starting and getting most of snaps. Redshirt the fragile slender Watson!

I have talked to people that have seen every snap of Spring, and before the Spring game, they were saying that Stoudt was the QB and it wasn't close. They were proven correct yesterday. What you hear from the coaches is "coach speak", trying to keep Kelly happy and here until the Fall. Stoudt has won the job, and I doubt Kelly is mature enough to stay as the backup.

Yeah, right. The starting QB spot is still up in the air. If yesterday's spring game was live, Chad Kelly may have been the best QB on the field. There were multiple times where he could've made plays with his feet but couldn't because he got slapped on the shoulder by a defender two yards away.
You saw Chad Kelly get frustrated because he was playing handicapped.

It has happened in "live scrimmages" as well. Those that have seen every snap say its not close. He is a turnover machine, with a bad attitude. He also blew up at a coach in an earlier scrimmage. The writing is on the wall.

I have been to 3 practices and one earlier scrimmage myself and have talked with several guys that are involved in the program. What they described before yesterday is exactly what happened. Kelly is not mature enough to start in Athens.

you guys are talking practice and spring games...... what would he do against Georgia in front of 85,000 on national tv??????????? Yesterday was a blessing. To see the volatility before the season started..... CK has been exposed.... The wasn't SWAG.... it was his raw uncontrolled emotion..... there is a huge difference!

Why were there two sets of rules for the QBs?

It seems unfair that Kelly had to deal with touch sacks and Stoudt was free to roam without worrying about being touched.

What are you talking about with "two sets of rules"?

The touch rule was the same. Maybe one line protected better than the other. But Stoudt was "touch sacked" a number of times.

Dirty steve,.... You've got to be kidding. That may be the most ridiculous synopsis of a players performance in my life. If you were born a coot, you'd clearly be a Garcia fan.

declaring Cole as the starter and allowing him to exclusively work with the 1's. It's unfair to Cole to jerk his chains just to not hurt the feelings of a 2nd or 3rd string college QB.

They have to wait until they feel confident Watson can be the backup. I'm told that it will not take long after Fall camp begins.

Not jerking his chains at all. Want him to focus and keep improving until the fall (all of them). Doubt anyone is assured they are starting yet. Common practice out of spring ball.

We all just saw he he handles adversity. Not going for it on 4th down in the spring game isn't a big deal. Now,..Imagine how he will handle a real adversity when a real game is on the line.

There is no real competition ...the discussion and uncertainty by the Coaches is a game just to keep the QBs and fans motivated and involved. Stoudt is and will be the starting QB baring an injury.

This was an "All the marbles" occasion

As close as they could get to game conditions at Georgia. The hill, 33,000, the full fanfare, all of it. This was not spring practice. There are no second chances in football games. In this simulation, with as much pressure of a real game as could be created, one player rose up and met the challenge, and one did not. Sometimes in life, there are certain litmus tests and "windows", and you have to step up in those occasions. We saw what happened this time, and it swung the balance.
I would hate to get to Georgia with a hostile environment and have my quarter back showing weakness and the opponent exploit this. Clearly now there is a frontrunner at QB, and that is what is needed. Without this simulation Saturday, we have no other indicators other than the two QB's are relatively even and having a good day and a bad day each.

I'm not so sure it's jumping the gun to expect Stoudt to start against UGA. He's paid his dues, made good decisions in game-time situations and knows the system inside and out. Barring a miraculous summer/fall camp from Watson (where he puts on 25 #s of muscle and gets the offense down pat), I see Cole being the man. That's fine with me....he's solid.

Tho Stoudt's stats were not mind boggling. I'll bet his grades will be very impressive.
Why? B cuz 6 of his 8 incomplete passes were balls he threw away to avoid a sack!
You football geniouses that spoke of the White team having the edge because of the pass rush fail to note that our "athletic QB" Chad Kelly was sacked 4 times. But why? Because he does not throw the ball away to avoid the sack! He looks for a place to run. Against good defenses..... it is far better to throw the ball away and avoid the sack. Don't argue that. It's a fact.
