What stops a company from buying a college team?

Think about it. Amazon or a smaller market company could decide to fund and build a powerhouse football team anywhere- fearing large salaries for coaches, facilities and player compensation. Imagine a school like Georgia state in ATL getting corporate funds behind it and then demanding to be included top level playoff tier. Advertising alone would be worth it. It’s coming!!!

Didn't Nike already do that?

Not that it has mattered.

Good sense stops that. You obviously do not understand that a business needs to make a profit and has shareholders that require that the stock price stay up. If Joe Blow has enough money from selling whatever he sells, he could risk losing the money but rich people don't get rich by being stupid.

Genuine question here but why wouldn't a successful college football team not generate revenue for its owner? How are you so sure it would be a loss when the evidence of Alabama, Clemson , Georgia, Michigan , Texas, Texas A&M etc shows they are multi million dollar football revenue schools already?

Not seeing how they would “own” the team, at least under current conditions. I assume you’re suggesting they would use NIL. If so, it’s not as if they’d get to collect gate receipts, conference payouts, etc. Or did you mean something else entirely?

Why would a business want to alienate well over half their customer base by supporting a single college team? Bad business.

What if they used a NASCAR model and had several teams under one umbrella. Might see a break away like LIV.

Nothing! Actually read a very interesting article that suggested there was a Dubai Prince that is or was investigating monetary return if he invested into a P5 college. I think the article while not naming the person, it suggested he was an UAE guy that had a stake in the LIV golf league. There are some very rich people looking at these possibilities.
