It's an overly complicated, convoluted metric, shrouded in secrecy.
To make matters worse, the selection committee doesn't even apply the results consistently.
We got screwed a couple of times because our NET supposedly wasn't good enough, then another time our NET was around 35 and we were left out. It makes no sense.
Like Brad said last year, they will find a reason to keep you out if they don't want you: not enough quality wins, too many bad losses, NET too high, strength of schedule not good enough, etc.

I feel like you have a lot of solid B ball takes. You could always quit trolling the football fans. Just a suggestion.

It seems to weight margin of victory too much

Margin of victory is incredibly dumb especially considering NET caps it at 10 points. A close game can easily get to a 10 point spread by fouls.
The net makes no sense.

Margin of victory shouldn't be in play at all because it effectively is counted twice by including efficiency metrics. Single game efficiency metrics inherently capture margin of victory. Including uncapped efficiency metrics and capped MOV is effectively double counting a very small set of data.

Margin of victory is capped at 10 points. I don't know how much weight there is, but a 30 point win is the same as a 10 point win.
I think it is over-rewarding, or under-punishing, losing to Q1 teams. It seems a larger balance of Q1 opponents benefits the NET rating even if you lose the majority of those games.
And lastly, I think the ratings are making some sort of an assumption too early in the season. There has to be a baseline that the ratings start from, and that baseline seems to be flawed.

A 30 point win won't be the same as a 10 point win because efficiency is uncapped and unadjusted for garbage time. That's how the Big 12 and MWC gamed NET. They inflated their efficiency metrics by running up the score against a bunch of bad teams until we got to conference play and they entered a feedback loop.

It's the same in the margin of victory measure, which was the topic.
Efficiency is a different measure. But you are right, by not capping there, a blowout does have larger impact than a 10 point win.
