The National Do Not Call Registry is a joke

I'm getting hammered by political calls but I expect that this time of year. It's the solicitations that are rampant. Charter Communications robocalled me 7 times in 3 days.
I read somewhere that you could sue the violator for $500 for each call. Anyone know if this is true?
Meanwhile, hey FCC! Don't put a reg in place if you're not going to enforce it.

I'm having a lot of fun with the political calls asking for money. It goes something like this...
"You [Democrats] [Republicans] raised my taxes a few years ago. As a result, I had to adjust the family budget and cut out a few things. The first thing I cut out was donations to the [Democratic] [Republican] party. When you lower my taxes I'll redo the budget and see if I can fit you in."
They usually hang up after that.

If you are a Charter customer, they can call you. One trick with the DNC registry is it doesn't apply to companies you do business with (i.e. verizon if you have a Verizon phone, Charter if you have Charter TV or internet, etc).
Now if you don't do business with them, you can report here: https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx
According to this, they can actually be fined up to $16K per call...though highly unlikely: http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0108-national-do-not-call-registry#unwanted
It also states this:
If I register my number, will ALL unwanted calls stop?
No, the Do Not Call Registry prohibits sales calls. You still may receive political calls, charitable calls, debt collection calls, informational calls, and telephone survey calls.
In addition, companies may still call if you’ve recently done business with the company, or if you’ve given the company written permission to call you. However, if you ask a company not to call you again, it must honor your request. Record the date of your request.

And it clearly was a sales call.
As for companies that I do business with, I tell them that I won't be doing business with them any more if they keep calling.

Political calls were exempted in the law

Charities and businesses you already deal with are exempted also (that's why Verizon can call every day).

'Charities' and Political calls don't count

I get more calls from the Purple Heart Society and others wanting donations approximately twice a week. It's really annoying

I get that political and charity calls are exempt. It's the solicitations that I'm complaining about. That and the guy that called to tell me that I owe the IRS $6,000 and I'm going to jail if I don't pay him.

I would have messed with him for a few minutes. Wasted at least 30 minutes of his life as punishment for calling.

My favorite ploy is the police whistle. That and asking them to hold while I get so and so for them. Then put down the phone and walk away.

Here's how I stopped it
Feb 19, 2016, 4:13 PM

First of all, political calls are interestingly enough exempt from donotcall laws. Go figure.
My number was registered on the donotcall registry but all of a sudden I started getting numerous calls every day. I kept turning in the same numbers over and over but the FTC didn't do anything to stop it. Why, you ask? I did some research and found out Obama gave healthcare providers free access to all the telephone numbers in the federal government database so they can try to sell you insurance. That's right, Obamacare is at the root of it all. He's desperate and will do anything to save it. I did the following two things and it took about a week, but the unsolicited calls suddenly stopped.
Step 1: Install Calls Blacklist app. Change the settings so calls from anyone not in your contact list will be blocked and go straight to voicemail. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vladlee.easyblacklist&hl=en
Step 2: Change your voicemail greeting to say the number has been disconnected. http://www.youmail.com/community/greetings/category/errormessages?p_o1=rating&p_pg=1&p_l=18
The app keeps a log of blocked calls. Wait for the calls to stop, then change your phone back to the way you want it.
Good Luck
