Very, very sad to see a tree of that age go down. I'm 63 and those trees were already huge when I was a little kid. But, by the same token, the big old oaks trees around the field in front of Fike were little freshly planted saplings at the time.
Oak trees reaching that size are very wind resistant. Particularly when they're thick with foliage. Combine a thoroughly saturated ground with a bit of high wind and that's all it takes to un-do a couple of hundred years of growth.
One thing Clemson has always been good about is replacing our oak trees when they go down, die, or need to be removed.
Of course, we won't see a new tree reach that size in our lifetimes, but our campus will always have an ample number of big oaks at various stages of maturity. The trees in front of Fike and many of the trees in and around Death Valley are prime examples.

Look at the videos of the time the tree feel. I am sure I saw a white Ford F250 with a tool box and several shovels in the back just before the tree fell.

I would think these would still make the 400-600 range.
So sad. I am 50 and first saw them when I was about 5. They were huge then.

All the large oaks on the common area across from the entry to Riggs Hall were saplings when "Midnight Man" was filmed in 1974.
If you watch the end, Burt Lancaster walks through them during the closing credits of the movie.

Imagine the events it has witnessed.
I presume it was the soaked ground that led to its demise.

It fell about 3 o'clock...

I had just left the Clemson House when I noticed it lying on the ground. The strange thing about it was that the wind was relatively calm at the time. It didn't fall during a thunderstorm. Fortunately, it fell towards Bowman Field and didn't fall on Godfrey Hall. It is a Bur Oak, the same as the Centennial Oak in the parking lot near Redfern and the Hendrix Center. That species of oak is not native to this part of the country, so it obviously was planted when the institution was very young. It did appear to have a good bit of root rot when I got a closer look at it with a friend of mine that teaches horticulture. The drought of the last few years, combined with all the rain we've had this year has made falling trees a significant problem. Roots died out in the drought and now when the ground is soft, the weight distribution between crown and root ball is heavily in favor of the crown and trees can fall.

There's another bur oak near the one that fell...

and I (and my friend) noticed that it didn't look so great at the ground line. It's even closer to Godfrey Hall than this one was, and if it fell in that direction, it would destroy the building. One of its limbs is almost touching Godfrey as it is. I'd hate to lose it too, but I'd rather have the university cut it down and control where it falls than have it fall on its own. It's fortunate this one fell onto the field. A white oak near Riggs Hall on the grounds of the Calhoun Mansion fell about a month ago.

the PINK crepe myrtles on campus and downtown. With our colors being orange and purple, the pink looks terrible especially the one in the stadium. Someone was not thinking. They should have planted white crepe myrtles. I have even seen deep purple ones.

were just planted near the scoreboard at Death Valley as part of the Scroll of Honor project. I think that cultivar is the most commonly planted on campus. I'd like to see some more sugar maples since their fall color is orange.

types of trees planted. UCS handpicked the new oaks in their new tailgate area to make sure the fall leaf color was close to their garnet color.

is replacing and adding new hardwood trees on campus.
As I mentioned elsewhere, all the big oaks across the street from the entry to Riggs Hall were saplings in 1974 when "Midnight Man" was filmed.
Also, the trees that line the field in front of Riggs were planted in the mid-60s and they are huge now.
