They wanted him last season and obviously they can't get compensation after the season.

Not odd or strange. They made the playoffs last year. They weren't in a position to trade him. Maybe if they would have been out of it they couukd have traded him for a 5th round pick or something. They got caught in no man's land with him. They know they are about to have to give Tua a massive contract pretty soon. They couldnt keep him.

I’m a lifelong phins fan so it’s the phins we are talking about here lol we are the poster child of stupidity… tua does not deserve a big contract he’s done nothing to prove that … we should wait until after this year and see what he does and if he can actually earn it. That pick was dumb and most phins fans would agree.

But there is compensation.
Just because they weren't able to work out a trade with another team, the NFL awards compensatory picks starting in the third round for teams like the Dolphins who lose players like Wilkins to free agency. Call it sports socialism if you will, but they really are trying to produce a level playing field.
Would four extra draft picks make up for losing one Christian Wilkins? Maybe, maybe not. Every deal you sign or don't sign is a gamble. If you feel you can replace that talent with someone coming in on a rookie deal, plus get four extra draft picks in order to get better instantly, all while saving $110M, why not take that deal?

but a 3rd round pick could produce a player 80% as talented as Wilkins for 10s of millions less.
that is the gamble they are taking.

They have salary cap issues they are have to work through. They want him badly, but they also need other players too.
We need that (salary cap) for NIL.

To resign Tua is dumb. Trade Tua and draft a QB. I am a longggggg suffering dolphins fan. It’s been a long time since 1971.

As a fellow Phins fan, I'm on the fence with Tua.
Do I think he's a generational QB like Mahomes? No. Do I think he may be a step up from Tanneyhill? Yes. Tua's in that game-manager/pro-bowl tier so I can't blame the office for wanting to go ahead and lock him down for a few years. Not to mention, based on what I've seen passed around, a Tua extension isn't necessarily the reason Wilkins walked. MIA couldn't meet the number he wanted so he said Adios and now just got the bag from the Raiders (No shame there).
That said, if the Phins had a shot at a generational QB, I'd love to see us go after it. However, seems like the stars are never aligned to go get that QB - Marino being the exception.
McDaniels feels like he can win with Tua so MIA is essentially going to be tied to him for a few more years unless something drastically changes. Hope it works out but seems like we're about to be in for some rough/lean years unless we hit on some draft picks.

Unbelievable. Some smoke around them bringing in Derrick Henry. Maybe they're making room.
