Now for some facts

VCU has been on Mack a long time- much longer than South Carolina. They also pushed for him very hard for a long time.
His choice of VCU shouldn't have shocked anyone that paid it any attention.
The sports director for WLTX was posting on twitter BEFORE the announcement started earlier today that VCU and UCONN seemed to be the top choices. So WLTX wasn't surprised he didn't pick South Carolina.
Reggie Anderson @ReggieWLTX · 2h 2 hours ago Students filing in for the Tevin Mack announcement. The feeling is he will choose between VCU and UCONN.
Carey Rich @TheCaptain_03 · 2h 2 hours ago Congrats to Tevin Mack on his decision to play at VCU..VCU Asst. Mike Morrell did a terrific job of making Mack his priority @30piecemack
Carey Rich @TheCaptain_03 · 1h 1 hour ago The decision went down to the wire between South Carolina and VCU..Tevin is a scorer that can flat out get buckets @30piecemack

USC, UGA, and Clemson three of his other finalist. UCONN was just too far away.

I agree VCU has been to the big dance alot in the past 4-5 years. Their a program that has a good basketball tradition. Tevin Mack is from Columbia so going to Richmond will be a step up for him.

Than us, UGAy and USuCk but Richmond might be more of a cesspool than Columbia. It's just like Columbia, but a bigger version and most people in the state of VA feel the same about their capital city as we do ours. I think that reason alone would be enough to steer me elsewhere but that's just me and I'm a Clemson homer and know there's something special in the hills...

SportsTalk ?@sportstalksc · 1h1 hour ago ? South Carolina, US Mack said USC was on his mind last night after Dozier commitment but VCU, UConn and UGA were top 3 most of the way.

Wish Coach Brownell could close a few more good recruits.

With the way he and his staff develop talent, you would think that would start to resonate in the area and he could start to build some recruiting momentum. Last year was a good year, but we still didn't make The Tournament in his fifth year. We are improving, but the increments have been a bit on the small side. You can't help but wonder a little if he can ever recruit at the level he needs to so that we can occasionally move into the top 5-7 in the ACC and get into the big dance 3 out of 5 years.
It will be interesting to see if we can improve this year like we did last year, without KJ McDaniels, and get back into The Tournament.

Tevin Mack is a great basketball player and a very nice young man, but there is NO WAY that he could ever get close to the grades to get in to Clemson or even USuCks for that matter. He visited because he could, but it was never gonna happen.
