I live in Amarillo, it has been a WILD week. Temps in the 80's Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Monday and Tuesday the wind was W at 35-40, gusting to 60. Fire started Tuesday afternoon and was 250K acres in no time. Best folks could do was open pasture gates to let livestock out and leave. I know several people that lost their home, business, animals, equipment, everything. Last I heard it was around 1.25MM acres. Wind shifted to blow out of the north on Tuesday afternoon, temp dropped 45 degrees in a matter of minutes. Then we woke up to 2" of snow this morning. Thankful for the moisture is an understatement!

Be careful. Prayers to all the people in the area.
We have friends in NW Kansas and go out there hunting a couple of times a year. Unless you've been in areas with vast expanses of farmland, it's hard to imagine how fires can spread that rapidly. We were there 2 yrs. ago, not long after a huge wildfire swept through a couple of counties. I was curious as to how it started. The guys we hunt with told me it's mostly caused by static electricity in the CRP grass. It was hard for me to believe so I googled it. Apparently when it gets dry and windy the CRP rubbing against each other, in vast expanses, can start multiple fire outburst through static charges. Insane.

Doesn't take much to get it going. Trailer chains dragging the ground were something I never paid attention to until I moved out here.
