From a pure beach standpoint, I pick Kiawah. I like the length, width, and bike friendly sand. The beach is not as crowded as some and is quieter than most. The downside is the accommodations can be on the pricey side.

I love being alone, therefore I choose Huntington State Park. Also nice Flounder in Oaks Creek. Back in my prime the only place was the Hut in OD

IOP

Family started going to IOP last century and camped at the Sand Dollar (much cheaper before Wild Dunes took over). Eventually got tired of no AC and sleeping in the sand and started renting beach front houses. Great places to go locally (Sea Biscuit and Windjammer to name a couple). Close to Charleston.
Over the years, the costs for beachfront houses kept going up and stoplights sprouted up everywhere once you leave IOP (Hwy 17 seems to have a new housing development every time we are in the area. McClellanville almost a suburb). We have moved on to Litchfield Beach for several years, but hope to return to IOP if we can find a house that can handle our large extended family gathering.

All good choices....

Been to several of the suggestions.
IOP Sullivan's Island Folly Ocean Drive (mostly Spring Break and end of spring semester trips - not family friendly) Cherry Grove
Never been to Mytle Beach proper except for obligatory Gay Dolphin visit and bar visits when I became of age. North Myrtle was the beach destination. Need to get the Kiawah
Never been, but I hear good things about DeBordieu closer to Georgetown
North Litchfield is very nice. We stay a few houses south of the State Park. Still prefer IOP (Charleston a better day/night trip than Myrtle). For the more adventurous, North Litchfield is very close to... (link below. I have only been there when the sun was up)

North Litchfield Beach.. The Pristine Beach with its unparalleled serenity make this Beach the best. It does not hurt that it is close to Murrell’s Inlet- the best seafood ever!

I like Folly, nice beach and it has tons of bars and restaurants. Litchfield is nice not as much to do unless you want to drive to MB. But it is more private than Folly.

Edisto without a doubt, the reason, all the above mentioned won’t be there. The best beach no one talks about. Not crowded, great bars and restaurants, and close enough to Charleston if you need anything. The ride out there is worth it!

Kiawah is definitely the nicest beach but unless you are staying there which is very pricey its a pretty good drive from anywher. So to me the best beach is Folly. Plenty of beach, nice new pier, good selection of restaurants, and for night time entertainment plenty of live music at the local dives.

It depends on what you are looking for in a beach destination. I personally like Kiawah but there are lots of good options out there. Many like the hustle and bustle of MB while others like people from Ohio/Michigan so HHI is their choice.

wrong with the suggestions here... IOP, Litchfield, Kiawah. But lately I tend to drive a bit longer and hit the FL panhandle. Pensacola, Ft Walton Beach, etc. Most beautiful white sand beaches I've ever seen. Tampa/St Pete area is also nice. Really enjoyed St Augustine too.

Wife & I bought a beach front condo in Cherry Grove 5 Years ago. Only 24 units with elevator (we bees in our 70s). We are 2 blocks south of the "village" and within walking distance to place we need to go. We can be from our lake house (Greenwood) to CG in under 4 hrs. We spend 4-5 months a year at our 2nd home.
We've been very blessed to be able to afford this lifestyle in our golden years. We avoid the weeks when the crazy mater-cycles are there.
We love the beach & CG is our happy place as old boomers.

Kiawah is the nicest beach. Not too crowded and a beautiful wide beach. But as someone else mentioned, unless you are prepared to pay big bucks to stay on the island, it is a long drive out there.
Pawley’s Island and Litchfield are nice and not as commercial as some. Lots of good food choices in this areas too.
Folly is my personal favorite. Nice beach and enough places to eat and drink but not as busy as Myrtle.

Thanks for all the replies!
I got sidetracked from this topic.
Some folks I know that moved here from the FL panhandle were asking me what Beach I recommended for them to visit here is SC.
I gave them my opinion and thought I would get some feedback here to see if I forgot any place. Litchfield was not on my list - I have never stayed there so its just an unknown to me. I have been to all the others mentioned in the thread.
FWIW: When I was a kid we camped at S Myrtle at Pirate Land College and single youth was North Myrtle / Cherry Grove Married with young kids to now has been IOP to Harbor Island and everything in between. For me its all good!
Its the beach!

Pretty sure that I've stayed at most all the beaches in SC at some point. Honeymooned at Hilton Head when there was literally nothing there but 2 one story motels, the William Hilton and the Adventure Inn. I have great childhood memories of Ocean Drive but not getting near Myrtle Beach if I can help it. I think Litchfield has the nicest beaches, stay at IOP only if you must be near/in Charleston (why?). I have a house in Beaufort and think Harbor Island and Hunting Island offer quiet, nature focused family vacations. But my choice is the Litchfield or Pawley's island areas.

I'll give you my top three, I can't pick one:
Daufuskie Island, classy, and never crowded with tons of bike trails
Sullivan's island, laid-back, never crowded. Very close to Charleston.
Fripp Island, if you're an outdoorsman, it's a paradise. If you like Myrtle Beach, you'll hate it.
I've been to them all, and these are my favorites

Well I only go to the beach to golf and it gets no better than the Myrtle Beach area but when I go I normally stay north or south of Myrtle. Place has gone crazy.
Been wanting to try Hilton Head…good? bad? I know nothing about their beaches.

My next three:
Debordieu- Quirky place and hard to find a place to stay, but the beach is fantastic
Hilton head- it's gotten too crowded, but the bike trails are awesome and the beach is great if you go in the off-season. During the summer, there's thousands of Ohioans on the beach.
Wild dunes/Isle of Palms- can get crowded here too, but wild dunes at sunrise is fantastic
Honorable mention: Kiawah Island, I stayed at the sanctuary a couple times, really nice. The beach is great, would be higher on my list if they were more options for lodging/dining.

My top three places not to go:
Myrtle Beach Grand Strand- Just an absolute crap show. North Myrtle's OK in Garden City is OK, but Myrtle Beach proper is just downright awful.
Edisto Island, I know some people on here that said they like it, but I don't care for the causeway going right Behind the beachfront houses, and if you're not into fishing, the beach really is just crappy
Folly Beach- has a couple of nice restaurants, but I'm not a big fan of the murky water and the runoff pollution from Charleston.
