Running backs

Mar 8, 2013, 8:05 AM

Appear to be a concern going in to the season.
Rod looks good and DJ has produced. First season without a CJ or Andre in 6 years.
Hopefully true freshmen can contribute and next star will emerge.
Need a game changer in the backfield.
Sammy gonna see a lot of action taking up the slack.

We have never seen Hot Rod as an every down back. But he

Mar 8, 2013, 8:16 AM

certainly has the explosive play baility that Ellington had.

I think the RB by comittee approach will be good enough to sustain production.

I'm more worried about the recievers stepping up to match Hopkins catches. If we odn't have a threat as a second reciever, Sammy will be doubled every play.

Hot Rod looked great towards the end of last season

Mar 8, 2013, 8:20 AM

He looked like he ran the ball like he meant it, there were times it looked like he ran harder than anyone on the team.

I'd say put Humphries on the other side to replace Nuk. May not be explosive but if left 1 on 1 always beats his guy and great hands. Look what he did backing up Sammy the last 2 years. Reminds me a lot of Wes Welker

Better keep him at wideout (see: LSU game)***

Re: Running backs

Not really a concern. One of these guys will step up just like Ellington did. Davis, Spiller, Harper, Ellington, the only question is who is next. We are recruiting elite running back talent at Clemson and just because they haven't seen an opportunity doesn't mean they aren't good.

Howard 3*
McDowell 4*
Brooks 4*
Gallman 4*
Dye 4*

No need for concern

Mar 8, 2013, 8:46 AM

True, it's been a looong time since we haven't had a sure-fire, solid, 1st team every down back- nearly a decade.

Regardless, There shouldn't be one bit of worry with the stable of RBs we have. They will produce more than enough

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Biggest concern I see is pass blocking

Mar 8, 2013, 9:03 AM

AE was very underrated in that category and the current backs have had a lot less oppotunities to work on it in games. This is a skill the most running backs don't get until college so it will be interesting to see how they do. Hopefully Hot Rod as a 5th year senior will do well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hopefully, one of the freshmen will be able to shine.

Mar 8, 2013, 9:12 AM

I just don't see the talent at running back with our current roster like we have had over the last 7 years. Regardless of the overhyped star ratings, my eyes tell me that the talent level is down. I really think Dye will emerge early.

Our running game must improve for us to take the next step. We can't continue to rely on our quarterback to be our second best running back and our only short yardage back. Plus, we need to be able to run the ball late in games to kill some clock.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not too worried...

Mar 8, 2013, 9:23 AM

I think this is more of a case of lack of experience than talent.

With Hot Rod being a 5th yr. Sr., I look for him to be the #1 primary back, and leader of that group.

I think Brooks will benefit greatly from Spring practice, and Fall camp, and he may work his way up to the #2 guy.

I can see Gallman redshirting, but Dye coming in and playing some his freshman year.

Basically, I think we are going to have a good rotation of about 4 guys. Maybe none are as good as AE, but they are all capable, and by rotating them, can keep the O fresh, and continue wearing down opposing Ds.

Plus add Sammy and Tajh to the equation for a few plays, and I think our RBs / Running game will be fine and dandy. Maybe not dominating, but pretty solid.

I'm more concerned that 50% of last years receiving yards

Mar 8, 2013, 9:39 AM

was gained by the 3 guys at pro day yesterday.

Re: I'm more concerned that 50% of last years receiving yards

Good point, but don't forget Sammy missed several games and was not 100% for many games. When he's on, nobody can cover him.

Except apparently M. Alexander....which is a good thing....***

I was impressed with Brooks, with the little I saw of

him last season. Don't count him out.

Just think, if Bellamy would have kept his head on straight

Mar 8, 2013, 11:42 AM

he, more than likely, would have been our starter. By this coming season, he could have been up from 175 to about 185-190 easily making him about the size of Ellington, but a maybe a bit faster...

His departure has caused a small skip in our continuous stream of elite RBs.

Yeah, it's a real bummer. He showed those flashes of his potential. Too bad for him and us that it never worked out.

I'm really looking forward to Dye though. Not expecting much out of his Freshman year, but by the time this guy is a Junior, I think he'll be like 200lbs and the Power Horse type back we'be been looking for.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bellamy never had his head on straight.

Mar 9, 2013, 1:00 AM [ in reply to Just think, if Bellamy would have kept his head on straight ]

I'm not trying to be cruel but Mike is a pothead. He never learned the playbook. We are much better off without him. Sorry Mike.

The leader of the free world is/was a pot head too. Nobody seems to mind that.

If Hotrod stays healthy he'll put up better numbers than AE.

Mar 9, 2013, 12:57 AM

He has better (more experienced) blockers.

Re: If Hotrod stays healthy he'll put up better numbers than AE.

Mar 9, 2013, 7:56 AM

I believe that our O line will be vastly improved over last year allowing for more ball pounding late in games and on short yardage. Our backs are gonna have better running lanes this year b/c of the line play. The plus side is TB won't have to run as much. We gonna be fine I tell ya!
