This is in the crypt at the Cathedral in Vézelay, where they’ve been for a thousand years. This was one of the most sacred sites for pilgrimage in Western europe.

Vezelay is this unbelievable hill top village in the middle of a stunning valley in rural Burgundy. If you ever find yourself in Dijon or with an extra day in Paris, I’d recommend it highly.

Out of curiosity, how are they so sure it's Mary Magdelane's rib? Is this a Shroud of Turin thing, where it's a piece of clothing that's roughly from the century that Jesus was alive in, in roughly the town they think he was in, so....MUST HAVE BELONGED TO JESUS.

Who knows. The story there is that a monk brought bones with him to Vézelay from the church in Provence where her skull is on display, back in 1050, and in 1058 the pope at the time confirmed their authenticity. The history as they tell it is that after the resurrection Mary moved to and died in Southern France.

The cathedral in Vézelay was the official starting off point for the English and French contingents of the second and third crusades (Richard the Lionheart was on this one).

Not sure, this may be one of the days I paid attention in CA AH (Art and Architecture History), but before a church can be a "cathedral" it has to have some relic? Usually enshrined in the apse (paid attention that day too).

You mean other than the significance to Christianity? If all it is is a 2000 year old rib bone in a golden tube in a golden box in a crypt in a cathedral on a hill in rural France, that’s still pretty cool to me.

If you say so

Carting around a bag of bones of anyone, much less worshipping them, strikes me as weird

But hey different strokes differentl folks
