Reason we're thin at QB..
Nov 19, 2014, 3:55 PM

Aside form Chad Kelly, correct me if I'm wrong: we told DW we would not take any QBs last year in an attempt to bring him to Clemson.
So really it was a coaching decision to risk this.

Was it not reported? I seem to recall this being stated, again... Which is why I'm asking the board. If you aren't sure... Not helpful.

It was reported that DW would be the only QB taken in his class. This is fact.

had kelly not been kicked off we would have had 5, count them, 5 qb's. is that thin. fact is we had a guy get hurt and a guy we thought could do the job struggle. so, tell me again about this risk.

Where do u get 5. We would have had 3 qbs recruited to play qb and a walkon what was given a ship.
That's way too thin you need 5 recruited qbs. You should sign one every year.

You only need two capable QBs. After that it doesn't matter.

If you get to your fifth QB, you are pretty much screwed.
If you get to your second or third QB, you are pretty much screwed.
You don't need five. As soon as you hit your #3 (which we did with Stoudt), it doesn't really matter who you trot out there. You are probably going to lose.

So....
Nov 19, 2014, 4:03 PM
|
|
We should have anticipated Kelly would have "personal" issues and be dismissed. We should have anticipated Watson would get hurt. We should have anticipated Stout would have confidence issues. We should have recruited a much better 4th string QB.
The bottom line is, crap happens. If QB play was great, we'd be complaining about the backs. If they were great, we'd be complaining about something else.

Why not take an athletic lower rated guy in and take 3 qbs in this class. We need to manage our roster better.

Kelly was kicked off the team, can't plan for that; however injuries happen so you could assume coaches know at any point a QB could not return.
Stoudt is a senior, id hope the coaches by now would have properly analyzed his talent level.
Again, just curious on the promises made a few years ago.

Francis: I agree but that goes with the territory. Reminds me of a story. This young guy was one of my future stars in my business and one day he brought in a huge deal as in mega bucks loaded with profit. I told him to take his wife out for a weekend to anyplace he wanted and sent me the bill. He did just that and on Monday morning was in the office and asked for his sales forecast. He looked at me strangely as if to say that I must have forgotten about his big sale last week--I simply said to him that "the sales game is all about what have you done for me lately"! I laughed, he laughed but he went on to a very successful career and would often remind me of that incident. I later sold the business to him and a lady and they took it to levels that astounded me.

and an emergency 4th QB. Can you please explain how we are thin? If any other team was down to there 3rd string because of injuries they would be thin as well.

I think they also placated Kelly

First they didn't let DW commit until after Kelly's LOI was in, then promised him no other QN's would be taken between him and DW's class.

A couple of things...
Nov 19, 2014, 5:00 PM
|
|
1. How many true freshman would you think could step in an beat out even Cole? Add to that a QB that would be ok with playing behind Watson for 3 years and hope he goes to the draft so he could play his senior year...So this doesn't solve anything!
2. I never heard this with DW, but I do rember Swag publicly staying he wasn't happy with Morris evaluating other QB's when he was a verbal.
