Portal challenges for Clemson.......

reading on Rivals where we lost out on another transfer OL, first to GATECH and now to ARK.
Trying to figure out why we have no success in the portal game seems boil down to culture and what we sell and don't vs what the transfer/portal kids want or expect. Clemson's recruiting style has long been relationship driven, selling the experience, the education, family and, of course, winning championships. Transfer players have already been sold on that or something like that at least once or twice and now they are only looking for a starting position or a bag of money, especially the skill players. They could care less about the school or the experience, etc., it's now a business where they either need to get exposure for the NFL or get paid today. NIL has totally changed the outlook. Nobody cares about education, they aren't "playing school" they are playing football.
I am not saying that we become Colorado, FSU or Ole Miss but we have to accept and realize who we are and how we got here. Dabo will never change his core principles and that's fine with me. We probably are best just to forget this BS portal crap and focus our attention and resources on high school players and current player retention. We may never win another Natty but, hey we won 3 already right!
Go Tigers!

That’s like saying blockbuster rentals are still great and should keep the sane business model going. Because they were the largest at one time. Streaming goes against our values.
If Clemson does not adopt new strategies then we will no longer be relevant.
Got to use the portal when needed and pay the nil. 8-4 will be standard otherwise.

Better to lose with honor than do what some are doing in a vain effort to win.

You would rather lose and not feel the euphoria of being national champs again than use the transfer portal? You’re kidding right? It’s not illegal, we just have a coach that doesn’t mind raking in 11-12 million a year, but doesn’t want to pay to get himself a WR or a few OL, DE, or LBs. I don’t get it. It looks tacky to me.

fewer slots available, AND, regardless of what is said, the reality of a smaller Alumni base to use in NIL Collectives. A Transfer Portal kid that is looking for big money, is ALSO looking to start at whatever school he offers his services to for the next year. I say only one year, because that is where the system is headed, one year contracts.

A simple Google search will show you the amount that IPTAY raised in FY2022. If 110Society received donations equal to 25% of that total each year, we would be in elite company from an NIL perspective.

We will survive, we all know why he would go to Arkansas or GT before us…. Guaranteed money $$$ it’s what the portal is all about, much of it is fools gold because they could choose not to play a down & still get PAID 💰💰💰💰

Question: do you donate to the Clemson collective? Advocating for a stronger portal presence is ok but requires funding. I don't believe Clemson has as many high wealth individuals as some of the other schools, so we are at a disadvantage. I will be upfront by saying I do not support the collective. Many other uses for my available funds which don't include helping an 18-year-old afford a Ferrari to drive around campus.
One other point. I am not sure if it is possible to be use upfront NIL payments on a limited basis. My guess is word would get out and those not receiving the same deal would be upset.

The desire and fire has to be lit on both ends and we are not the only school looking at the Portal. The Portal will not make or break a team but it seems that we have not come up with a plan to attract Portal players if we need them.

You left out the most important part from those Rivals articles.
Arkansas offered Nichols a deal that Clemson wasn't going try to beat and I agree with this decision 100%. Why overpay for a depth guy that barely seen the field at Tennessee?
We told Rutledge he would have to compete for playing time. Should we start lying to prospects?

agreed and that's why I say that we should pass on most of this BS transfer portal stuff and focus our NIL payments on retaining existing players and bringing in high rated HS players. I realize that NIL is here to stay, let's just use it where we can probably use it best

By only recruiting and developing HS players. Either we fully embrace recruiting the portal (yes that means bidding wars), or we accept our fate as a mid-tier team with no National Championship aspirations.

honestly, we did not lose a one of our 4 games this year because of not using the transfer portal; we lost because we couldn't protect the football and we had no reliable FG kicker; we had recruited a great one supposedly but he is apparently a head case.
I am ALL IN with trying to recruit the portal to upgrade our talent at certain spots, just dont know if we are going to be able to.

Instant gratification without thinking it out long term. It's the American way, more so in the last 20 to 40 years.
And, I'm not saying this applies to every single portal transfer but I see a lot of the "get rich quick" thinking at play or the "need gratification now" mentality. There is no end in sight for this way of thinking and it will continue until something major happens.
"I want/need money NOW" or "I need NFL exposure now because it's NFL or bust". There are few relatively speaking who will make it to the NFL. Most, without a decent education, are doomed to a lifestyle and lifetime of heartache they can't envision now. It's a gamble; for some a good gamble; for many not so much. Dabo is unlikely to get all the best players who have the same vision he has. He'll get some but will not be able to fill the roster completely with that type of player.

Don't forget that more than half of the players who enter the portal NEVER find a new position. They have thrown away their scholarships for nothing. That's a rude awakening for those kids who thought "Hey, I'm a great player and deserve to be starting and raking in those sweet NIL dollars!"
