the only schools in the entire country that field football teams that transfer players don't like?

Quite odd.....

High graduation rates, expectation of high performance off the field and very careful vetting of recruits vs. high dropout rate, high rates of transfers out and high rates (comparatively speaking) of off field shenanigans.

Transfers have generally had low success at their previous schools so the indications that they are not a good fit are already there.

Plus, Clemson makes a higher attempt to play deep into the roster than any other school that I know of.

It’s really no surprise that transfers wouldn’t “like” us.

There is a big positive in the portal for us...

It's now really easy for bad fits to leave and free up their scholarship. We don't make many mistakes (compared to most other schools) but is is nice be able to help bad fits along. Good for us, good for them.

A few schools like UGA, Ohio, Oregon pick up impact players but are paying giant sums of NIL $ for these guys. Other schools like the coots, Louisville, Miami have become revolving doors for players so they have no choice but to use the portal to fill their roster.

We do not have the NIL funds to compete with the Ohio states and UGAs of the world and dont want to be a revolving door, so we use our funds on player retention.

For the trolls (JK) who say Dabo has not sniffed the playoffs in the portal era, while true I dont believe it has much to do with the portal. Covid recruiting over zoom was a bust for selling culture, a couple of bad coaching hires, and two 5* QBs who did not live up to their billing were the primary culprits.

But have they had the desired “impact”? There’s a difference between “impact players” & those that actually “have impact”. And most importantly did those teams actually achieve something they otherwise would not gave?

Like one poster said, you have a gifted few (Ohio St., Georgia, etc.) Who have more money and can pretty much get whomever. Then it's jot a big list after that.

I imagine it has alot to do with the philosophy of using NIL for retention rather than acquisition. Personally I think that's the way NIL will head once the player market/rule changes shake out and stabilize. At some point it becomes a bad investment to pay a player millions to get drafted in the fifth round and lead you to a losing season. It's a better investment to pay the players who have produced for you and keep them around IMO.

Then again, most companies in the current economy have a larger budget for hiring than retention. So the current NIL trend could continue.

With the Academy’s … that’s easy - it takes a congressional appointment to get in. Clemson is a different story. Dabo has always done things “his way” . For example: If you are committed to Clemson and take another visit, your spot is now open … and it has worked for him in the past.

Today with NIL and the portal … it’s a different story. The fight for players is much more complicated. Only time will tell.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you don't need an appointment to get in to the academies.

but you still need the congressional nomination to get an appointment. Not only that, you need really high GPA and/or compensate with with a very high ACT/SAT. Avg GPA of is typically 4.0 or higher.

Plus you have to remember, that after your junior year, you must commit to being an officer. For the Army and Air Force, you commitment will be at least 5 years of Active Duty & 3 years in Army Reserve Component. For the Naval Academy, the commitment is 5 years of Active Duty in the Navy or Marines.

My best friend has the rare distinction of being accepted into all 3 Academy's. He got into West Point and Navy with nominations from a Va Congressman, and then got into Air Force with a nomination from a congressman from Colorado.

With that that said, it's actually rare that someone transfers to an academy b/c they usually know by their senior year if that's what the want.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you don't need a congressional nomination either.

I had a presidential nomination when i was applying to the Air Force academy. I didn't get in but my rep said i could go to another school and transfer in later or try to get in under athletic acceptance.

I chose to go to Clemson under an Army ROTC scholarship instead

IF a transfer portal player really wanted to get into the academies they could.

Very true. I am retired from the USAF and spent about 10 years as an Air Force recruiter. Since Federal law currently prohibits those attending a military academy to accept NIL money, there is little incentive for someone in the portal to be interested in an academy unless of course they wanted to serve. Additionally I believe the transfer would be required to start as a freshman regardless of how many years they already had in college. There are likely age restrictions too. In other words, academy athletes have the ability to enter the portal but it’s unlikely that someone would choose to transfer in.

The military schools are simple .. it equals actual service afterwards .. and maybe some would not want to serve or not be “service worthy”. As for Clemson, in football .. we don’t use the “P” word (willing to pay millions and guaranteed starting spots) .. we do have a plethora of friends, family and local HS walk ons to fill the open slots.

the academies have no scholarship limits because everyone at the school is on full ride. that said they can recruit as many players as they can get in . if i had to guess i'd say the only reasons would be that 1) most courses at other schools would not transfer 2) the biggest is to get in you have to have a nomination from a congressman or senator. the academies play pure football because their guys just want to play imo

Unless we are being blatantly lied to we've attempted to bring a few guys but have had them to elsewhere for whatever reason. Not sure why we'd be out there begging for anyone at all to come here when we have a pretty solid roster all over. How many portal guys would have walked in off the street and been a starter day one that we didn't pursue? I'm thinking it's a pretty short list and they aren't coming here to sit on the bench.
