The British Open

Jul 23, 2017, 11:29 AM

When did they start calling it The Open? Is it considered hate speech to call it The British Open? I clearly have the confuse...?

The official name is The Open Championship as it predates the US Open. People sometimes refer to it as the British Open to distinguish it from the US

We call it the British open to distinguish it from our Open.

To the British people and most people........

around the world, it's called The Open. It would be to Americans like having the Masters referred to as the U.S. Masters.

We are about the only people in the world who say "British" Open.

No.

"Open" is the name of two different golf majors. So they are wrong. There's the US Open and there's the British Open. So this means they are arrogant. Why don't we just call our US Open, "The Open"? The Masters, there are NOT two different ones in different countries. So this highlights the hubris here, on the part of the British.

To a lot of people overseas, it is referred to as the US Masters. I was pretty shocked to find this out.

"The Open" is dumb, like the "Carolina" stoogery

Jul 23, 2017, 12:31 PM

is there some shame in calling it "The British Open"? No

If there are several Opens around, and there are - US, Canadian, Irish, Scottish, etc. - there should be some identifier with each one.

This is not unlike our idiot neighbors who stubbornly claim to be "Carolina" instead of NC and SC.

Why do folks want to intentionally obscure things over some childish ego thing?
