Dude that is the first thing I thought as I read this letter, that's funny. But JK did leave TNet about the time Neff got the promotion. Could explain his absence?

That letter was absolutely pathetic. All it said was expect more of the same. Breathe Pig, breathe... I'm just going to enjoy the sports programs from now on without complaining about the things I have no control over. I have to keep reminding myself of this change in my thinking.

He's absolutely right about development of NIL resources. That is about the only way to get some serious talent for our basketball program, now that the money's out in the open.

Agreed on NIL

Clemson has spearheaded NIL success & it simply won't surprise me if they can do the same thing in basketball & have direct success as a result, including landing big recruits.
The NIL center at Clemson is a sincere blessing.

Do you folks not think that other university programs aren't capable of doing the same thing with NIL? NIL IS going to be a driving factor going forward. It's going to be a battle of the BOOSTERS to see which university's boosters can put together the most lucrative opportunities and offers to get the best high school and/or Transfer Portal candidates.

Are you seriously kidding, the basketball team you saw this season is the same basketball team we have seen under Brownell for 12 years, with one exception, this years team probably has the best talent than at any time during Brownell's 12 years. What you've seen, and what the fan base has seen is the best it gets with a mediocre HC directing mediocre seasons one right after the other.
Graham Neff just prove he doesn't have the balls that it takes to be a college athletic director. Maybe he should enter Ray Tanner's school on when enough is enough with the same HC taking a BB program nowhere!!!!

No, I'm not kidding at all. I agree that coaching is lacking, but first we need some player talent - and that will require NIL money to get top talent to come to Clemson. Once we have some talent, then Brownell has no excuse. If he's fired it makes room for a better coach who would be tempted to come to Clemson because of our commitment to getting talent for him to work with.
Getting a great coach now would be impossible with the shape our program is in. And even a great coach will fail without great talent. You can only coach improvement so far before superior talent beats you.
So - get the talent first. If Brownell can't win with top talent, then get someone who can.

So I have to ask. How have other programs brought in talent without NIL? And I'm talking about football schools like Bama. Like Tennessee. What changed with their program, head coach. Va Tech, head coach. Just a generic washed over political letter. Brad's gotten everything he said he needed. Yeah, we'll make a tourney next year. Blind squirrels. Then miss it in 24 in his then 14th year.

Well, if some of the rumors are true, a lot of success of other teams has been due to under-the-table money. Actually, we had some basketball talent via that method in the days of BC Inabinet and Tates Locke.
Tates was a great basketball recruiter and coach and figured out pretty quickly that in order for Clemson to succeed in basketball he needed to find a way to get talent. The way he went about it was under-the-table and cost him and Clemson a great deal:
https://vault.si.com/vault/1982/03/08/the-descent-of-a-manThe Descent of A Man Taylor O. (Tates) Locke was having trouble sleeping at night. One reason was the speed coursing through his veins—"diet pills I got from a friendly Clemson
The same circumstances still exist (maybe even worse due to Brownell's failures), but at least now the talent can be hired legitimately - and that's what we'll need to do. We just don't have a history of success in basketball that will draw talent without some financial enticement.

Thanks for sharing this. I was a student at Clemson from 1970 through 1976 (undergraduate and graduate school) and remember those Tates Locke teams. It was nice being competitive with the other ACC teams but sad to learn how it was done. I do remember, after the fact, hearing references to "Trader Tates Monte Carlos" and the stories about getting Skip Wise out of Baltimore. Hoping any future success we have in basketball comes with playing within the rules...

It is now, since NIL has walked in the door. Those that don't play the game are doomed to failure eventually..... unless the rules are changed.

Graham Neff just got the job of AD. He needs a full year to set and implement the goals he has for the program. DRad was known for putting football on a pedestal because of the economic value--which I understand. But, I never saw him really get behind the basketball program enthusiastically. Let's see how the year goes.

What an absolute metrosexual bailout. If fans have any nerve at all this will be met with an empty Littlejohn. VT won the ACC Tournament, VT!!!! Does any rational person feel that Clemson is not at the very least on par with VT athletically, in all sports? Not watching or attending another game while this clown is coach. His last effort, the timeout that gave VT time to sub and call a play, is the straw that broke the camel's back. This type of mentality could go on forever; injuries, next year will be better; Covid issues, next year will be better; bad weather during the season, next year.....

That timeout let OUR GUYS set up on D instead of scramble situation. We took away their "set" and their guy took it one on one...jacked up a long three ND made it...

It was man to man so what set up is there? You yell "man" and everyone checks another player. Plus, it DID allow them to sub in the guy who made the shot. He was not on the court and the TO allowed white to think about who he did/did not want in the game. Clown is notorious for late game ineptitude over his 12 years. Many have noted Neff's letter and how it set expectations and those of you who noted the similarity of other letters over the years are right. All bark no bite. Do any of you ever notice that Clown is NEVER mentioned for other jobs when plenty of them are open every year? NEVER. It defies logic to maintain he's a good coach when literally no on else ever thinks the same.

A lot more than what DRad did. At least we know the goal is making the NCAAT next season. Also says he wants basketball to be really good and NIL will be big to bring really good recruits in. Can Brad deliver? That's what we have to see...

I don't think Brad can, but at least Neff indicated a goal an aspirations for the program. Drad never did. Like David Hood said, all signs were that Brad was coming back. I don't think he can do it but he got lucky with the sweet sixteen, so maybe he will again. Still say if PJ goes down with another major injury, and/or the guards are not consistent again, this team we be at the same state next season and that's it for Brad. Also feel someone will still transfer, and/or Tyson will not come back which means Brad needs two biigtime transfers like Collins and Bohannon to really be much better. Also, still would not be surprised if Brad takes another job. He is going to have the most pressure he has had since he has been here. Can he handle it? I have my doubts...

Neff is setting the program up for future success. This note was also to serve as a "give BB one more year" to make success happen do a degree. What degree we don't know. But if it doesn't happen next year then BB is gone. Neff is giving BB all the tools. and if BB doesn't succeed with those tools giving to him, then Neff let's him go.

Exactly. The LJ renovations have produced little, if any, results. Neff's letter is the same old crap Clemson ADs have been dishing out since Bobby Roberts.

What do we owe Brownell if we fire him right now? Didn't he just get an extension recently with a bunch of guaranteed money? I want b-ball to not suck as much as everybody else here, I'm just curious what we'd have to give up to move to a new coach. I didn't see Neff doing it months after coming in and this doesn't surprise me.

This was discussed extensively not long ago.
The buyout is almost identical for each of the next three years—like $2.8 million, $2.6 million and $2.4 million.

Problem is what the excuse will be when they don't make it. If it's a line in the sand, make it and stay, don't make it and you're out, that's getting there. But, as we all know deep down, it will be don't make it, excuse excuse excuse, then more Brownell is a good guy, no one's getting in trouble, et al.

Not too much money to other sports, but basketball is bigtime like this weekend shows. Its a revenue sport, and it deserves money putting in it. Neff is basketball guy and he wants to win...
Football will be fine because it gets own huge revenue stream.

That will be my last “negative” post on Coach Brownell. While I believe he should have been let go from now on he’s my coach and I’m rooting for him and our BBall team!! Hopefully things get turned around and we start making investments in our BBall program and hopefully we start making the tournament regularly.

Have you seen frank martins results besides the final 4? They are awful.

That’s funny, his winning percentage was almost the same as Brownell‘s, and he has four NCAA tournament wins to Brad‘s two. What were you saying about results?

Start making investments???? The last 5 years this dude has gotten EVERYTHING re-done. What is there left to invest in other than anyone the clown? How embarassing is it that the coots have the stones to fire a guy who took them to the FINAL FOUR????!!!!!! NOT the Sweet Sixteen, or the tournament a time or two but the FINAL FREAKING FOUR!!!!
Enough with the “clown” comment. Like his results or not, he is our coach and he represents Clemson with integrity and class - which is difficult in the sleezy world of college basketball. This is a hot topic and can be argued both ways. An AD is NOT going to publicly say a coach has to win x number of games or make a tournament or he will be fired. Not going to do it. However, Sounds like he is making expectations clear

Disappointing. I look forward to returning to Littlejohn and actively supporting the program when a new HC is hired.

Wow. A really good letter from Neff. What a great, sane, and logical letter.
It's great to see that he is working on many things that put us behind in recruiting. It is also great that he has high expectations for basketball and he believes brownell can take us there. I do too. It all starts with recruiting.
Brownell's results have been better than his recruiting. Let's recruit better and get results!

Just don't take any money from football. That's a known entity that knows how to win. I really see us being about the same next year as we were this year. I guess it depends if he has any of the current players hit the portal so he can bring in some better guys. With the current roster, he's losing three good seniors. Plus, his signees usually take time to develop, unlike the freshmen that some of our competition sign.

That's why I think Brad won't be able to deliver it. Still needs some really good transfers in portal, so some guys might feel more pressure. Basketball is a bigtime sport but won't interfere with the huge football revenue stream.

When were we a consistently good program? Are you talking the 3 year streak under Purnell where we went to the ncaa tourney and lost in the first round?
Or the 3 year streak under Barnes?

Yes, two of the previous three coaches were able to get the program to that level.
The issue is retaining and supporting a coach of that level or better when we find one.

There's the declaration: "season did not meet expectations"

The new AD has spoken. Coach Brownell will obviously be back for at least one more season. Tiger fans may as well support the program as Graham Neff outlined and hope for the best.
Good luck to Brad and the players as we look forward to next season and the meeting of the expectations of most Clemson supporters.
Go Tigers!

He did say that but he alluded to the phantom adversity of the program. Only one was a couple injuries, and we won those games. Gives himself an out for next year. Excuses. That's all I've heard for 12 years.

Seems to me we can expect another season of what we have seen the past 12 years. Unless of course our esteemed AD thinks he can talk Coach K.out of retirement.

History an and aberration
Mar 17, 2022, 11:20 AM
|
|
Rick Barnes was at Clemson 4 season, he made the NCAA in his 2nd year and went to the NCAA his last 3 years in a row.
Oliver Purnell took over an abysmal program. He was here 8 years, went to the NCAA in year 5, then went to the NCAA his last 3 years in row.
Brad Brownell took over a program that had gone to the NCAA 3 years in a row.
Brad has been here 12 years, he went to the NCAA his 1st year, 8th year, 11th year.
Notice the trend? Good coaches build and sustain success.
If Brad makes the NCAA next year it will be an aberration not a sign of the future.
P.S. The ACC was MUCH better during the Barnes and Purnell eras.

Yeah, and hiring a good coach like Barnes got us Larry shyatt. If we want to hire and retain a good coach, a lot of changes need to take place.

I think the worse part of all of this is how apathetic I am toward basketball now. I used to never miss a game. I was either at Littlejohn, or glued to the tv. Now.. the mediocrity has beat me over the head for so long that basketball is an afterthought. Sure I want them to do well. I want any team wearing that PAW to win. But living and dying with each game is long gone. This letter proves they aren't ready to make a leap into greatness. They are willing however to try everything, again, except new leadership. Mehhh, whatever. What's for lunch?

Just like Dabo did to rob Spence. No sense in wasting time on something that doesn’t work, I’m very disappointed in Neff absolutely took the easy path.
I’ve said before, Brad has pictures of somebody or has information that he’s holding over the university’s head. Nothing else makes sense to me

Very well done Mr. Neff. Any Athletic Director wants his or teams to be successful but most importantly, they want their student athletes to excel. All of us Clemson fans want winning teams and Championships and our Administration does also. If you are a Season Ticket holder, you have a right to gripe and a decision to not buy the tickets but who does that hurt? Think about it and move on. Go Tigers.

This sounds a lot like a "we need better next year or you're gone" letter. You don't put coaches on a work improvement/probation plan. You have a discussion about next year's expectations. There are always two sides to firing a coach. Are you going to bring in someone better? And, How do you determine that without firing the existing coach? A coach with a strong resume might not be interested in Clemson unless they offer up a strong deal. NIL money can help recruit and show perspective coaches there is a talent pool that will help them succeed but eventually you have to find someone to get the team to deliver.

So what did AD Neff just say???? If he chooses to retain Brownell, then he is hitching his wagon to the success of basketball. So ask yourself AD Neff are you confident enough in Year 13+ being the magic????? Furthermore, Do NOT underestimate Clemson nation's DNA

Not Good Enough AD Neff! You wrote a lot of words that Communicate Nothing! You can have The Best facilities, support staff, and... But if the Coach simply cannot make the right calls at the right moment during the game, explain that part? Remember Tommy Bowden did the exact same thing, remember we just need "The Players to Step Up"? If Brownell stays you Will Not fill up Littlejohn Any next season and when that happens, the new AD himself will be linked to Brownell. Young Mr Neff has a Ripe Moment early in tenure to demonstrate Bold Leadership. Fire Brownell Now!!!!!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results! Thus, another year of insanity!!!! Sometimes you need to change for change's sake and to just shake things up. Look at all of the other schools that have pulled the trigger after 3 - 6 years and fired their coaches because the know a change is needed.
