Which side of the fence was Monte on growing up??

Lee said, "When you grow up in South Carolina like I have, you're on one side of the fence or the other."
Has ever said specifically which side of the fence he was on growing up in Lugoff ? I haven't seen him come right out and say one way or the other.
Regardless, the ultimate proof will be in his results down the road. Brad Scott proved that merely having served time at SCAR as a coach isn't all that important.
But honestly I don't see how you could coach for Clemson against South Carolina if you actually grew up a South Carolina fan ... or vice versa.
Was Monte a Clemson or a SCAR fan growing up ?

I grew up a Clemson fan and went to school here for some time but if South Carolina was paying me 6 to 7 figures then you better believe I would be all garnet and black. Nothing personal, just business.

You are nit picking now.If we had hired a coach, who grew up a Fla.State fan, would you be saying that.Monte is a Clemson man now, just like Dabo is.

That's different ...

Kids in South Carolina generally don't grow up totally immersed in FSU fandom. South Carolina kids don't routinely fall on one side of the Tiger/Nole fence.
Monte's the one who said, "When you grow up in South Carolina, you are on one side of the fence or the other."
I just happen to agree, and wonder which side of the fence he was on.
Not saying others couldn't or wouldn't get past it professionally ... just saying that personally, I would have a hard time coaching Clemson if I were a South Carolina fan growing up. That would be a big hurdle for me personally.
For others, maybe not so much ...

I know people who grew up HATING Clemson and ended up going to Clemson for school and now HATE Scar.
I do agree that some coaches who grew up in this state and now either coach somewhere in South Carolina or elsewhere would never coach for Clemson or South Carolina (whoever they grew up hating). In fact, I know from personal experience that Gregg Marshall would probably never want to coach at Clemson based on fandom.

I'm as much a dyed in the wool fan as anyone on this site and always will be but if usuc hired me as spurlocks replacement and payed me a six figure salary,i would jump on the wagon. I would try to beat Clemson every year and if i did,i would shed a couple tears over a brewsky. You would too.Clemson is my team but they don't buy my groceries. You need to get a grip with reality and not take a rivalry to that level.

Thank you! It's more than being a fan. It's a matter of principles.

That's foolish, what i said was hypothetical and would never come true but most would have that kind of allegiance to turn down a six figure income unless it was illegal or not moral.Would you coach against a relative, say a brother or a son.You have allegiance to family, right.

Like many tiger fans, i was grown up to basically dislike every south Carolina sport and if south carolina were to play Russia, i would pull for Russia. But if i was offered a six figure salary to coach south Carolina football, i mean idk, i guess i would have to take it. Heck, if anything i could just coach them for a few yrs then retire or quit and go back to my old life and enjoy the $$ i just made. Monte Lee is a coot at heart, but the money and opportunity is what got him to Clemson.
