ceiling which had suffered rain damage over several years. I had lights on and didn't notice the event.

I can imagine the wonders of the heathens' rationalization of such an event. 'It's got to mean something, an omen, sign or warning.' I know, let's make something up so the dummies will think we're smart and we can take advantage of them.
