PIP DAY HAS ARRIVED. Watch

Today is PIP EVE.
God's work is amazing in so many ways. This is just one example. The million dollar view is not bad either.
The first laid egg may start hatching today. The eaglet inside will start pecking at the egg to get out. It may take a while.
Start paying close attention to nest for the next few days,
Shadow spent little time on the nest Thursday. He did bring her a piece of a coot to eat. Weather was good.
Snow is moving in on Sat and Sunday. 6 to 12 inches. Big Bear Valley elevation ranges from 5000 ft. to 9000 ft. They get 276 inches of snow avg. per year. 36 snow days.
Just as the eaglets will be hatching snow will begin and high winds. I am sure Jackie will be spending lots of time on the nest. Keep a check on it on Friday and the weekend.
Eagles build the largest stick nest and the one Jackie and Shadow occupy is 145 feet high in a pine tree. It is the highest eagle nest in America. The nest is appx. 6x7 feet. Nests can weigh up to 2 tons.
During the first two to three weeks after hatching at least one parent typically remains at the nest. Females are at the nest for about 90% of this time, and males are there about half as often. Although both males and females hunt for their nestlings, males provide most of the food. Nestlings are unable to tear apart their food until they are about six weeks old. Adults spend less time at the nest as the nestlings mature. Chicks fledge when they are eight to fourteen weeks old. In the few weeks prior to leaving the nest, they exercise their wings by flying to perches near the nest.
Fledglings remain near their parents and siblings for an additional two to ten weeks before they disperse. During this fledgling period the young spend increasingly less time with the adults and begin to hunt on their own. Because Eagles first breed when they are about five years old, they have a long period to explore and move about before they find a mate and establish a territory. Local food availability and weather play important roles in determining the extent of their migratory movements during this sub-adult stage of their life.
Enjoy watching God at work.

imagine how cold and uncomfortable it must be there right now. BRRRR!
A pine tree 145 feet tall is a natural wonder in and of itself, which is what FOBBV says the tree where Jackie and Shadow's nest is. Because it is so high and isolated, with no objects to compare it to, we don't really realize the massive size of the nest, and these majestic birds. They are HUGE aviators, and at seven feet, the nest is wider than I am tall! I don't think I would want to intrude on it, I would probably become a couple weeks worth of meals for them!

The camera is going to be attended today and each day and each time the eagle on the nest gets up and eggs are visible, the camera will zoom in on eggs. If there is a hatching going on, we will see it, maybe. Thousands from around the world will be watching today and this weekend.

Big Bear Lake spans approximately 7 miles in length and boasts a surface area of around 3,000 acres. While its average depth hovers around 35 feet, the lake's deepest point reaches an impressive 72 feet. For 2023 the lake has hovered between 55 and 65 feet. There is approximately 22 miles of shoreline, some of which can be accessed from the road or parks. The mild winters provide that the lake does not freeze over, resulting in wintering of bald eagles in Big Bear Lake.
The lake is man made and the original rock ### was constructed in the late 1800's to provide water for the citrus crops in San Bernardino valley. Big Bear Valley has a permanent resident population of just over 5000, but during the summer 100,000 tourists visit the area. Skiing and snowboarding are popular in the winter. Big Bear Lake at one time had a large Grizzly Bear population, thus the name. Grizzlies were hunted to extinction but brown bears still roam the area. The forest area is a part of the San Bernardino National Forest.

UPDATE

The wind has been stronger than any wind I have seen on the nest. All Day. Thought it was going to blow my tv off the wall.
Jackie and Shadow have rotated a couple times on nest duty.
No hatch as of yet. Of course it could happen at any time, even during the night.
Jackie turned the eggs numerous times today.
If wind keeps up, that snow tomorrow will be side ways or a blizzard.
