Sharty...ref question for you

Oct 2, 2016, 9:28 PM

In the 2nd quarter Clemson got flagged for defensive holding on a 3rd and 17 play. They added ten yards to the end of Jackson's 5 yard gain, butt it became...3rd and 2? Isn't defensive holding automatic first down?

There are 3 requirements for defensive holding to include an automatic first down:
1. Offensive player being held is an eligible receiver and
2. the hold occurs beyond the Neutral Zone, and
3. a subsequent forward pass goes beyond the Neutral Zone

There actually was a defensive holding penalty later in the game that resulted in an automatic first down.

Shorty, nother ref question - it seemed like UL was often

not fully set before the whistle (false starts aside) - they would line up and the moment they got into position, they snap without pausing for a beat. Was that just me and the liquor, or were the refs letting them get away with that?
