He was serving as an assistant high school coach. Maybe he was a head coach before, but the link said assistant coach.

There is little to no information on the guy. Just wondering. Will trust Dabo, because of his record with good hires. We shall see how these hires play out.

People have a right to question any move made by Dabo or the University. It’s natural to question and have a different opinion. If Dabo was an investor, would you question the moves when your money was on the line?! When top investment bankers were available yet he promotes someone with no experience instead?! What’s the difference?! We invest in this program. Time. Money. Tears. Cheers. No one could do anything to pull my allegiance away. I do question these moves. Family and friends get preferential treatment by our coach. People like to compare the Chad Morris hire to the way Dabo hired coaches. Chad was a known quantity. He learned from Gus and was excelling as a coach in Texas high school football. He was on many peoples list when Dabo hired him. Kevin Steele, Brent Venables were both big name coordinators. Show me any division one program that has promoted like Dabo with success. I can point to any successful program and show you big name hires as coordinators that brought championships. Our offensive scheme suffered the minute Scott left. It’s been steady downhill since the beat down of Bama in 2018. The offensive line has gotten progressively worse with higher quality players. I was happy to see Elliott leave. I was hoping for a big name, proven offensive coordinator. I really wanted to see the tandem from Coastal get a long look. Joe Brady to get a long look. That said, we can go 0-12 and my status as a Tiger fan won’t change. I’ve been loyal since I understood what football was in 1977 and attended my first Clemson game. However, bashing people for questioning a move is kinda ridiculous. How boring would it be if we were all blind cheerleaders?! The 6% pulse I lost was because I was screaming for Lawrence to start over Kelly Bryant. Boy did I receive crap about stating the obvious. 4 games in, everyone finally got on board! Some were already on board, but blind cheerleaders defended KB! I hope those of us questioning these moves are wrong. Looking at college football history, we may be right. Ugh.

Thank you. We should ALL be able to voice an opinion. And I know I welcome all counter opinions. It's how you learn. Dabo welcomes it too. Our star value per player has gone up, we've recruited well since then... Until you dig into the numbers and dig into the depth chart. So, what I'm saying with the transfers, our net recruiting has actually gone down. It would make for an interesting off season discussion from you FB guru's way smarter than I.

Anymore. He seems dug in to do everything his way
That said this is just an analyst position. People might be over reacting a bit. An analyst job is a good place to start to see if he is indeed a prodigy

I remember a coach who had formerly been a HS coach not long before he became our very successful OC who guided us to much success. His name was Chad Morris, and regardless of his record as a HC, he was a great hire for Clemson. Time will tell, but I hope this guy is that kind of success story, too.

Morris was one of the top Texas and high school head coaches in the country with one exceptional year as OC at Tulsa.
Congrats to new analyst. I am sure he can help out. And hopefully recruit the very best high school players in the country.

I mean next thing you know the kid from the Bi-Lo that bagged his groceries is gonna get a job on the staff. You know why Alabama has so much success and 0 falloff every season? Because they hire every out of work head coach. Coaches that have years of experience and coaches that have relationships with recruits.

Debo hires smart people who will be loyal to him and are All-In for Clemson/Dabo! Same pattern with the people, he fires, not loyal, stupid moves, not all in for Clemson.
Almost never any internal in-fighting to waste any energy on anything but Clemson Success. Same way he recruits players, he wants to make them successful at Clemson and in life.
Go Tigers, Beat Iowa State!

I've got to respectfully disagree.
Saban is currently the benchmark for college football coaches and Bama the benchmark for successful programs. BUT we have the idea Saban is a "win at all costs" kinda guy. I dont know if this is fair because most who are so successful usually exhibit pretty strong character (not perfect and this does not apply to politicians). Anyhow, Dabo seems to want to alter the definition of success with a stronger emphasis on character development. This being the case, we cannot look simply at W/L records to evaluate a hire.
Some of the folks he pulled in over the years were head-scratchers, but Dabo rasied our expectations based on whatever formula he uses. Since I do not have all the facts available (much less any authority), I am left to trust Dabo and because of his track record, I think this is not blind faith.
Having said all this, losing both coordinators in the same year makes me uncomfortable.

nepotism
Dabo is starting to scare me, I trust Dabo, he has created the greatest culture In cfb...
But good lord....
He just hired his former roommate and long friend to be the defensive analyst for a major college football program and this Friend has zero qualifications for the position on any resume that's available to us.
This ##### wild as ####....I know we all love dabo....but ummmm....if you can't see this move for what it is, you blind

I’m guessing when Dabo was hired as head coach you were quick to call it foolish. Hiring people you know and trust is not necessarily a negative. Dabo has a great record of hiring coaches and I’m certain there is more to it than they were roommates

There isn't a lot of information on our new hire. So is he the guy for the job? That remains to be seen. But from all that I've read about W.Goodman, It could be a learning experience for both of them. "Iron sharpens iron" (coaching/analyst) I honestly do not think Dabo would have hired him if he didn't possess the skills needed for the position, sooooo.

Together I anticipate these two coaches will be equal or better than BV. Best is the standard and BV had the biggest DC shoes in the country.

Interesting sidenote on Wes
Dec 24, 2021, 12:49 PM
[ in reply to Re: TNET: Report: Dabo Swinney makes Clemson defensive analyst hire ] |

Most of us had never heard of the guy, but evidently he was known throughout the college football universe in the south as some type of prodigy. I was pretty suspect of the move myself until a few days ago. I saw a video with Josh Pate of 24/7 where he mentioned Wes as potential defensive coordinator at Clemson almost a week before Dabo made the hire. The media and the general public all saw this as very suspect and an extremely risky hire. But among college football insiders Wes was seen as a legit option as DC.

Lowcntry_Tiger® your observations about sports media are also relevant for most news (i.e., non-sports) media. They've got big platforms for spouting off their big mouths, can be entertaining with their trigger talk, but know very little of which they speak or write.

What does that have to do with anything? What does that comment have to do with my post?
First, 24/7 is not some big news organization. Only people into college football and basketball recruiting know who they are.
Second, the information Josh Pate has such as his comments on Wes Goodwin, are positive for Clemson and Dabo. Furthermore, it’s information only someone on the inside would know. Someone close to college football in the south.
So I’m not sure what point you’re making here. A point that is irrelevant and ad hominem.

Way to GO, Dabo! Bring your good friends and family of football experience to extend your family of Clemson football! It’s all about heart and gut feelings.. Dabo knows how to develop mutual & fruitful friendships or in this case an old roommate to come back and help his legacy at Clemson. For those who aren’t happy for Dabo’s new hires from within or for this one, they are just those minorities that you can’t make them happy. It’s like if you give them a free Cadillac they will complain, “I don’t like this, I wanted a Lexus!” We believe in Dabo, is he perfect? No, but he is the best thing that happened to Clemson period!

The only mention of our program was a reference to him wanting us to beat Alabama 5 years ago. The only reference to his football experience was an offhand reference to him being a coach. What backs up your statement?

This is exactly right.....Nick Saban even talked about this, Saban said most head coaches down fall is hiring staff that they know, are familiar with or that they know they can get along with, he said friendships and coaching do not mix.
I think dabo has gotten to a point where he feels he is Julius Ceasar and he wants people that will not question him.....
I hope I'm wrong....I absolutely love Dabo...but this hire Is nepotism and suspect as hell
If you can't see this, you are blind

I hope this guy Jody is a diamond-in-the-rough kind of guy, but I dunno... This reads more like 'hey Jody, I can get you signed on over here for about 150k a year, but if you don't work out, you're gone, ok? And that way, Dabo has done his good deed for a friend. Again, I hope I am wrong.

You likened Dabo to Julius Caesar. You tend to be much like Brutus. You know....a 'stab 'em in the back' kind of guy.

And there is also a reason why Saban can't keep a staff. They refer to him as Satan. Dabo has done pretty good lifting Clemson out of the football bottoms.
I for one don't want an Alabama culture at Clemson.

bama that call him satan... and if "they" call him satan, then why do any of "they" accept a job offer from him?
On the contrary, there are many coaches wanting to be hired by Saban. He's not the most personable human being, but you cannot dispute his results on the field or that people that he hire get opportunities to grow and go on to bigger jobs after being on his staff...
Saban is no different than the average boss in america; do well and he pats you on the back, do not so well and he kicks you in the rear...

There is absolutely nothing to back this up. I’ve been as vocal as anyone about wanting coaching changes. But the negativity towards Dabo’s motives mystifies me.

I’m shocked that Dabo would make another hire without consulting the keyboard warriors on Tigernet! What qualifies him to hire assistants and subordinates just because he thinks these people can do a great job? Maybe it’s the six straight conference championships he’s led Clemson to. Or maybe it’s the six straight appearances in the College Football Playoffs. But then again it could be the two national championships Dabo has led the Tigers to. I’m betting it’s all of the above, along with the fact that over the last seven seasons only Nick Saban at Alabama has a record as good as Dabo’s. It’s a fact that 2021 was a “down” year by the standards Dabo has set but if DJ had played as well as we know he can (see BC and ND 2020) and the Tigers had not been absolutely decimated with injuries there is a great chance they would be in the playoffs now. Remember- even Alabama hasn’t been in the playoffs every year.

I never questioned the Streeter or Goodwin hire, I understood they have been in place, Dabo had them training on the job and I could definitely see them being the best men for the job....I liked the hires, I trust Dabo.
Know this is different.
Not one person can tell me they believe this man was the most qualified person for this position, not one man can point out anything this man has ever done that says he's earned this position... Dabo knows there are people more deserving and better suited for this position,.
Dabo gave his Friend a position.... It may turn out to be great....or it may be a disaster...only time will tell....
But as a Head Coach that's always preached The most qualified person plays regardless of fanfare or recruiting stars, a man that's always preached the most deserving person gets the job....Dabo did not give the most qualified person the job...he handed it to a life long friend that he could care less if he is best man for the job or not.
This is a very questionable decision to say the least...
I trust Dabo with the program, the man's simply put A INCREDIBLE COACH...
But he disappointed me here on more levels than just a unjust hire

Dabo has known this guy a long time. Probably won a national title with him. For what he hired him for, I’m sure Dabo will get his best effort. Maybe Dabo should have hired Tigernet to be his defensive analyst. Go to work boys and girls.

TigerTrey12, this is an old post so I doubt that you'll read the late feedback.
Good head coaches, just like good managers in the business world, don't worry about what others think as far as hiring staff.
An exception is in the movies / TV series / news broadcast business, where ratings are impacted by having known-name actors or performers in their lineup. (Of course, movies and TV series actors are not doing anything real, and sadly most news anchors know nothing of the subjects about which they speak ... that is why teleprompters exist.)
But most all coaches have a broad network of people from which they may make potential hires. Being able to hire people which the manager believes will stick around (for continuity's sake) helps the organization overall. Dabo's seeming bias towards hiring people that he really knows is, I suspect, the main reason why he hires 'friends' ... or really people that he really knows. Dabo certainly has had (or still has) friendly relations with people that he'd never hire. But the guy has an eye for football coaching talent (more so now than when he was getting his HC'ing legs underneath him in 2008 & 2009).
Maybe you're really young and don't know how things work in the real world, and you're of the Occupy Wall Street / Save the World from the 'industrialists' crowd. When you've had a chance to observe and then apply your brain to good use, then you'll have a better perspective on all this.

The way Tn bash coaches, I believe I’d hire people I trust like Dabo does. At least they will build each other up. Obviously, Dabo knows and likes what this guy brings to the table. If it was up to Tn, Dabo wouldn’t be at Clemson and we probably would be stuck were we were before Dabo got here ( like in Basketball). Clemson has ALWAYS hired from the inside. You are in good ole South Buddy Carolina! Give him a break and see what he does. The last rookie made offensive coordinator is now making more than 99% of us will make in our lifetime in one year. Not bad for a no name. Go Tigers!

Not at all..just would like to see him be true to his mantra of "Best is the Standard". If you honestly think some the last few hires are the best....you need to take a p!ss test because your on some kind of drugs. With the exception of Streeter, I don't see any of these coaches being able to recruit the top players that are needed to compete. They may be blessed with some super brainpower that enables them to know what other teams are thinking...but I don't think that resonates with today's high level recruits. If you think that the concept of CDS hiring unqualified friends isn't being used against Clemson in recruiting....take a look at the 3 IMG recruits we lost and the latest 2022 recruiting rankings.
