Which QB gives us the best shot to beat FSU and SC?
Apr 14, 2014, 3:20 PM

Those are the two most important games of the season every year, and that's what the ultimate decision should come down to.
Personally, I still think we need a lot more out of the QB in the running game if we want to take this offense to the next level. The main question that lingers for me after the Spring Game is how large is the disparity between Stoudt and Kelly in terms of how effective they are as ball-carriers. Stoudt was by no means perfect, but he made better decisions on Saturday. However, arm-wise Stoudt and Kelly seem to be of equal talent. While neither possess cannons, they both can make all of the throws necessary in this offense.
All of this off-the-field crap doesn't matter. In the end, the QB that can lead our actual 1st team offense down the field the most consistently in practice will win the job. I don't think Saturday's Spring Game with it's split squads and very vanilla game plans got us any closer to that answer.

I do know it's gotta be a high percentile of people he's in that's won a superbowl, or even to narrow it down further, of starting players to win a superbowl, or even to narrow it down further, of starting quarterbacks to win a superbowl

Peyton isn't a running QB so we still wouldn't have a chance.
HTH that helps

When did we ever have a headcase running the show?

Boyd, Parker, Harper, Proctor, Whitehurst....I wouldn't call any of them headcases.

I would say Boyd was a head case at times.
Parker was a decent QB until the rib shot vs Auburn.
Proctor has a noodle arm and Whitehurst was very good on a team with a mediocre coach.
Harper, never quite figured him out. He was awesome the first year and stunk the next.

Equal arm-wise? I disagree.

Wat? Stoudt is definitely the better passer. Can't just look at arm strength, he's much more accurate and a better decision maker in the passing game.
It's to be expected. The gap in experience is quite large. Stoudt has played meaningful snaps in college and had lots of time to refine his game.

Stoudt has played meaningful snaps?
Apr 14, 2014, 4:09 PM

The only game where the game was even close to being in doubt in which Stoudt played was BC way back in 2011. Playing with the 2nd team in 3 score games isn't meaningful action.
Stoudt still has a lot to prove. Looking good in mop-up duty is nothing like looking good against a first-string elite defense. Neither QB looked spectacular on Saturday, and both made questionable decisions. I don't even think Watson is out of contention yet.

Which games are you referring to where Stoudt came into

a competitive game and did more than hand it off?
Neither player has ever started a game. To call either one of them experienced is a huge stretch.

Stoudt has been making appearances for three years
Apr 14, 2014, 4:17 PM

He's learned the system in and out, has beefed up considerably.
Yes, Stoudt is much more experienced than Chad. Why is this so hard to believe? He's a freaking senior, of course he's got more experience.

My argument has nothing to do with Kelly...
Apr 14, 2014, 4:29 PM
|
|
I haven't once said Kelly has more experience.
My contention is that neither QB is experienced at all. 19 players on our defense had more snaps just last season than Stoudt has had in his first 4 years on campus.
If you wanted me to rate the 2 QBs in terms of experience, Kelly's a 2/10 in terms of experience, while Stoudt's a 4/10, for whatever that's worth.
We can guess that Stoudt is a master of this offense, but we really don't know. The fact that Stoudt hasn't been named the starter yet should be concerning because like you said, "he's a freaking senior", and he should be the man.

Not sure how Whitehurst would do in this system

He was a slowwwww white boy. I think he could have done well in a pro-style offense with a similar talent level to what we have now, though.

That 03 FSU game was the perfect storm...against FSU
Apr 14, 2014, 4:36 PM

It was also Tommy Bowden at his best. He motivated that team after losing to Wake...I don't know how he did it...but he did.
Guarantee you FSU walked into DV, being ranked #3, thinking it would be a cake walk.
