#### about Ukraine these days, but we keep pumping tax dollars to them….all the while everyone is tied up in Taylor Swift’s jacket for the next game?

This country is so ###### beyond belief.

Ukraine aid is currently held up in Congress.

I don't know anything about Taylor Swift's jacket. There's always pop culture schlock at the same time as serious global affairs. On day 1 of the Cuban missile crisis the #1 song in America was Monster Mash.

There are legit arguments for continuing to help fight this war, there are legit arguments that we and NATO created the basis for it, and there are legit arguments for - regardless of who is at fault - for either not helping fight this war at all or doing so under very different accountabilities.

But there is no discussing those viewpoints. One either cares about Ukraine and wants to fight at all costs, or one is MAGA and doesn't want to fight. It is a name calling contest from the very first word. And that's in Congress. Here, forget it. Tell me when it's over, and tell me how much it cost. We currently have no definition of either one.

NATO made Russian invade Ukraine?

That's preposterous on its face. Putin repeatedly claimed he invaded to root out Nazis, which is equally preposterous. One great irony is that he employed the mercenary Wagner Group, which was named after Adolf Hitler's favorite composer.

Things Putin has said:

“Zelensky is not a Jew but a disgrace to the Jewish people."

"Neo-Nazis, followers of Hitler, have been raised on pedestals as today’s heroes in Ukraine."

"One and a half million [Jews]… were killed in Ukraine, and primarily at the hands of [Stepan] Bandera [the Ukrainian nationalist leader] followers." After screening historical footage of WWII atrocities, Putin told the audience: "This is Bandera and his minions. These are the people who today are the heroes of Ukraine." Stepan Bandera died 65 years ago.

Truth is, Putin's an ex-KGB guy who's trying to restore Russia to the halcyon days of the Soviet Union by reabsorbing former Soviet states. Russia grossly overestimated their military capabilities and grossly underestimated the West's reaction.

I like you, too. This is why I dont like talking about it. Simply say "there is a legit argument", and one gets your first sentence, without even hearing what a person has to say.

Yes, there are many very experienced people from the diplomatic corp who say Russia would not have invaded Ukraine without the talk of inviting them to join nato, and they have defensible reasons believing so. No one said that "made Russia invade Ukraine". And then there is the fact that we have one corrupt oligarchy invading another corrupt oligarchy, each simply wanting more of what they want. Those are very legit factors in deciding whether to make a huge and open ended commitment with no stated definition of success, and no apparent end in sight. In discussing those factors, we might find ourselves reaching different conclusions about what we should do, but the arguments themselves are very legit.

But you'd rather talk like I'm stupid, which is the answer to the OP question. So, go ahead.

I'm talking like there's no difference between saying, "NATO created the basis for Russia invading Ukraine" and saying, "NATO made Russia invade Ukraine." Ukraine joining NATO is not a reasonable pretext for Russian invasion. Full stop.

And it's not as if Ukraine would be the first NATO member to border Russia.

There is corruption in Ukraine, but doesn't mean we should equate them with Russia.

I'm sure there are people with foreign policy experience who are parroting Russian propaganda about the war. That doesn't make it credible.

You said, "One either cares about Ukraine and wants to fight at all costs, or one is MAGA and doesn't want to fight." That's untrue. I think we should continue providing reasonable support like we have been. If I were to speculate why people are opposed to supporting Ukraine, I'd say it's a combination of a diet of misinformation, false equivalences, and general opposition to anything that can be construed as part of the Democrats' agenda.

Getting back to the original question, I think it's pretty clear that people do still give a flying #### about Ukraine.

You think we should stay in this as it is. I dont. I think I learned my lesson with Vietnam and Afghanistan. Not saying we should never fight a war, am saying this doesnt fit the criteria, and looks a lot like those previous two. You disagree. Fine. I have been responding to the OP question only, and this exchange adequately illustrates my answer.

I think we should let Europe handle it. I am not willing to go to nuclear war with Russia over Ukraine.

Jump back 40 years and tell me what we would have done if Mexico announced it was joining the Warsaw Pact.?What would we have done if USSR had not backed down in Cuban missle crisis?

What is good for the goose...........

Right. I didnt want to get into all the back and forth: I was answering only the OP question. But yes, several State Dept people wanted us to back off the Ukraine/Nato stuff back before all the saber rattling started. What factor was that in the invasion? Depends on who you talk to. But we seem to keep throwing good money after bad.

Does anyone really think Russia was going to next invade Poland? Then France? No. Putin wanted Ukraine. Ukrainian oligarchs wanted what they had. Because oligarchs. Looks a lot like Vietnam and Afghanistan, except those two we could almost afford. We are now broke and about out of dry powder, I'm afraid.

There is another legit side to this, and all that would be an interesting discussion. My point was that one cant say these things without immediately hearing "preposterous" and "Russian propaganda". So, to the OP question, I'd just rather not. The fix is already in on this one, so just tell me how bad it gets and what it cost. I hope for a magic end as much as anyone else, but as before, what the end actually is, and how far away it is, no one seems to know.

Edit: If a bully picks on you, you go all in: have to defend personal autonomy, etc. If a bully picks on somebody else, you have to respond, but you have to figure out the best way. You cant stop every bully right now, you cant fight every fight right now. If you can walk in and deck the guy, do it. If you cant, you have to go about it another way, or you get beat up with nothing to show for it, which describes every war we have fought on someone else's behalf to date.

We don't want a war with Russia. Our conventional arsenal is more advanced than theirs. We would start beating them rather quickly in a conventional war. Russia won't allow a dedeat Russia's nuclear arsenal is more advanced than ours. They now have hypersonic nuclear delivery. When it goes nuclear, the whole world loses; including us.
