My surprise with Clemson.

I am surprised as to how the offense continues to struggle. I am bewildered as to why there is zero vertical passing game.
But, on the positive side, I am pleasantly surprised at beast with a last name of Shipley.
Is there any explanation as to why the vertical passing game is non-existent?

Zero confidence by the coaches, probably deservedly so. Just finally whiffed on a QB after lucking out with Trevor and Deshaun. I would compare it to the disappointment of John Brantley at UF

I hear you on all points but we saw DJ simply ball out twice last year in huge games, im not half nor do I think anyone is but I can't imagine we can call DJ a whiff yet, you don't throw for almost 500 against a good ND team and have no hope. I'm not sure of the answer but clearly there has to be something there.

Based on what I see of ND, looks like DJ played good against a bad ND team.

I swear I haven't seen a true deep ball all year?
(Discounting our game against SC State High School, of course.)

My only guess is they can’t execute in practice so the coaches don’t trust the players to execute in the games. That’s my only guess. It’s really sad to knowing we have pretty much ALL 5 STAR RECEIVERS!!

Because Tony Elliott doesn't know where the MOF is. And he doesn't use TE's.

Your surprised; zero vertical passing game; Heck, I'd settle for Rob Spence and his "Bubble Screen " offense with what I am seeing right now.

Taking what the defense gives us?

Lack of running game and inconsistency hitting underneath throws allows teams to play coverage?
No trust in the Oline to hold up?
I personally think it all stems from the lack of a QB run threat. DJ has seemed to be hesitant to run. He needs to get over that quickly.

Yeah, the OL is awful. Then, you have to have a qb that has good mechanics and/or mobility to complete the passes. We are talking bad offense harkiing back to the Tommy West days.

If you look at the stats Clemson has lead the country 3 years now in passes at or behind the line of scrimmage. We don't have a big vertical game, our WRs have usually been good enough to rack up YAC. We did take shots but not near as many as people think. The inability to move the ball with short passes which our offense is built in had magnified our lack of vertical passes which again, we don't do much of in the first place.

Pretty simple

A bit like FSU issues from past few years - thank goodness we have great defense.
No chemistry with receivers. No go to slot receiver like renfro. Breaking in new running backs and they are not yet multi dimensional. Aka, pass block, receiver - chemistry missing. QB is not the polished person we thought he was. Limited touch on passes. Stares down receivers, can’t go over the top - he throws lasers, not passes. Footwork needs lots of work. No QB runs for the defense to worry about. Offensive line is not good. Really not good.
Defensive - Nit pick, but I still am slightly worried that we don’t pressure QB enough (sacks).
