That's the rumor. I would love for someone at the presser to actually ask that, if not directly then at least how the process works (Dabo has final say on big calls like FG vs. going for it on 4th down etc... or is it a group call all the time?). Why pay Riley 2 million to call the same old stuff yourself? Why would Riley come if not promised the keys to the car and the opportunity to play with all the 4/5 star toys?

He would swear he isn’t though. I think it’s like a overzealous parent that swears they don’t make decisions for their kids but they make sure they the kids know they will be cut off and out of the will and disowned if they don’t do exactly what they say.

I don't think there is any way to know for sure. It is odd that Dabo is carrying a sheet that looks like a waffle house menu. Riley looked like he was working off a sheet of paper the size of a shirt pocket sized note pad.

100% correct, Dabo needs to give keys to OC and let him go. One of many things that needs to be corrected. Recruit some WR's please!
Entire team and staff looked over confident and ill-prepared.....

As long as this is the system we are running no top tier WRs will want to come run WR screens and 7 yard stick routes.

Look at the tape of the game. He is clearly walking with the play sheet in his hand and talking on his headset. Calling every play I believe. That is why our team looks so similar for the past 3 years. Last night was a carbon copy of last year. Long and unenjoyable year coming up I'm afraid. The fans will show their displeasure too I believe by not being there. Hope I'm wrong.

He isn’t calling all of the plays. That’s silly. He has had that sheet in his hand for years.

partially an analytics cheat sheet to help him make decisions like when to go for it on 4th down, go for 2, etc.

Hey wouldn't let Riley bring in new assistants upon request. Why would he let him have full control of play calling?

If so, I expect Riley to leave after the season.

He is a rising star in the profession, and the last thing he wants is to be part of a subpar offense and see his stock fall.
I'm also pretty sure that he would like to have the freedom to run his own offense, rather than be micromanaged by his head coach.

The play calling if made by Riley says that Riley does not think Klubnic is ready to throw yet. In this age of football everyone should know that screen passes are just run plays. We essentially ran all night as there were only a few passes down field which says they are not confident in Klunic's development. The dink and dunk is what all football teams do when they think the qb is not yet capable.

Once again, if Klubnik isn’t ready to throw by now, it’s another mark against the coaches. He is capable, we saw in the ACC championship game. Just like we saw DJ sling it in the ND game. What’s the common denominator here?

Not sure why everyone is under the assumption that it HAS to be because CK can’t throw the ball down field. I said last year with DJ it’s not because DJ can’t throw the ball downfield, he showed he could this past Saturday. It’s an issue with the WRs. It’s not that there’s a lack of confidence at QB. It’s a complete lack of confidence and faith at WR.

This is 100% correct. They did not trust Cade, I believe he can be great but he did not look ready. Granted the pieces around him didn’t either.

TCU ran the ball well, and used screens too. Difference is their O-line could block and receivers that could get open for deep balls

So we're not as talented at o-line and wr as TCU... or is Riley not being allowed to run his offense? *scratches chin*

Winning the game is ultimately Dabo's responsibility. Tough to fault him if he starts intervening when his first year OC is being stymied by mistakes on the road. The truth is neither Dabo nor Garrett Riley were out there fumbling the game away or arrogantly taking poor angles and failing to wrap up.
If we played sound football last night, we would have won by 3 scores. Anyone that knows ball can see that. Leave the naysaying to the media - they are better at it anyway.

Dabo was calling plays on the first drive. This team looked incompetent and slow. That’s on coaching.

a big Duke mistake. If both teams had played sound football I think it would've been a tight game that could've gone either way rather than Duke winning by 3 TDs. We made mistakes, but not 4 TDs worth.
The fact that we could've been in a dog fight with Duke had we played sound football is, itself, very concerning.

Their 40 plus yard QB scramble for the TD was one such mistake that gave Duke confidence that they could slay the giant. That in itself was an example of poor tackling that continued throughout the game along with bad angles on Duke runners. Wasn't that Barrett Carter that had his hands on Leonard and missed a tackle? He is not suddenly untalented and not the #1 LB on Kiper's board - he made a mistake, and like the rest of our Tigers, he will fix those mistakes.

Duke only got a 3 TD lead because the dynamics of the game changed when we let Leonard run free and Duke got the lead. Our 2nd goal line fumble made the clock the most important factor and the running game could no longer be our path to victory. We were forced into the vertical passing game against a prevent defense that was designed to stop it.
Just because mistakes were made, does not mean that we have bad players or coaches. These are humans and they make mistakes just like we do. They will be corrected.

True. And we don't have the offense to make up for mistakes. We are not explosive. We have to nickel and dime what they give us and hope we can execute what they give us. Same plan Duke had... Duke knew they could beat us if they played mistake free.

IDK but something wasnt right. Dabo was constantly waving the menu and talking, Riley seemed to be just looking and taking notes. I know one thing, if Im the OC calling it Id want to be in the booth looking down and seeing everything.
