They are paying for it today

To the tune of $40,000 per year at an institution that REQUIRES you to pay up to 1/3rd of that cost out of pocket because Clemson is too stingy to offer scholarships to anyone but athletes.
Yup, even if you have enough scholarships or financial aid to cover the entire cost of your Clemson education, Clemson refuses to allow it. You have to write a check and pay them your own money, even if you have enough scholarships to cover the cost. I know a girl who lost both of her parents and grandparents in the same year while during her sophomore year at Clemson. Suddenly, she was in charge of the affairs for her ENTIRE family. She had loans and scholarships, and Clemson looked at her case and told her she either had to pay 1/3rd of her tuition out of pocket, or leave. Luckily, a fellow professor at Clemson knew her and paid for her to get through school. But lesson learned, its already extremely expensive to attend Clemson, and Clemson financial aid is one of the most obtuse organizations I've ever dealt with. A free ticket included in the cost of that $40,000 price is well deserved.

I'm curious as to the practicalities of your position. Allowing for every student receiving a free ticket would require blocking approximately 1/4 of the stadium for them. Do you see leaving those seats empty at the less desirable games?. Or do you see keeping the current allotment and notifying the alums (who have paid their own 'exorbitant' tuition (which generally pays for education) plus hundreds to thousands in donations that they cannot come to the big games because students are ENTITLED to the seats?

100% of the team are students (except in Chapel Hill). No students??? No team. It's just that simple.

Surely you mean "friends" instead of "all the students I

Really less than 1 in 5 students of today are donors of tomorrow.
IPTAY has fewer than 20,000 donors. Clemson has more than 100,000 living alumni.

I seriously wonder how many of the people saying the students should be the priority would still feel that way if their tickets were among those taken away in order to reserve tickets for all the students? I also wonder if those same people would be ok with our stadium having 10,000 or so empty seats for every game other than the two or so big ones each season?
